MR. TIM RILEY: THE DOCTOR OF GOSPEL BASS SINGERS: THE MAN, THE VOICE, THE LEGEND!!! ( 1 OF 4 GREAT BASS SINGERS Who refused to use vocal fry-- Just pure vocal cut!!! (Along with JD Sumner, George Younce, and Jeff Chapman.)
@@freddiestudio7668 There have been times JD, George and even Tim have dipped into chest-fry, too. Sometimes it's tough to tell because those low notes are intrinsically rough sounding due to the low frequency of the fundamental, but the voice thinning out while still in chest seems to indicate fry starting to mix into the voice. Everybody goes into a mix when they go into their lowest notes, though, so this isn't to be disrespectful to any of these singers. Heck, most people are completely out of notes before they can even reach the lowest full chest notes of any of these guys (let alone their lowest chest-fry ones).
You do not mistake when Tim is singing and when he isn't. As a member of a family group for my entire childhood, and being in church my entire life, I did not appreciate bass singing until I heard Tim. I'll just tell you When it's done right, it gives the rest of the parts a SOLID foundation to stand on and it ALL sounds much better. Everybody's crazy about JD and George, Except, JD used his bass to accent the sound here and there, Tim gives those other notes something to build from through the entire song. Mr Riley gets my vote for the best ever. Thankfully, he's passing along his teachings to other bassists in Southern Gospel.
I have to give Tim Riley credit. I strongly believe he is hitting these notes in strictly natural, modal voice, with no vocal fry, or subharmonics, which is pretty rare. I can only think of a few others, who are not trained operatic singers, who I believe can do this. A few others, off the top of my head, would be; the late London Paris, Jeff Chapman, the late Harold Gilley, the late J.D. Sumner.
I will have to agree with you on all but JD. While he is by all rights the “lowest” bass I have heard, he did use a lot of fry. That’s just my opinion. Not saying I’m not a fan. Because he’s in my top 3. I don’t think anyone can match Tim’s tone and resonance except Jeff Chapman. No disrespect to the others you listed.
@@jeffkersey3417 For me, it was difficult to tell, with J.D. I believe he was hitting Es and Fs below Low C, in natural voice, but probably fry, or sub harmonics below that. He was good at whatever he used, and was pretty convincing with it. Some have perfected a bass falsetto well enough that it is difficult to tell. I am plumb sure London Paris was all natural and didn't know how to fry because, on his lowest notes, you could detect a hint of strain in his voice, to varying degrees, but no, subtle "gear change".
