Hey, man! I'm having a small problem here...Maybe you can help (?) I'm using an iPad Air 5, and audio monitors. I like to live jam, so recording with the E4 is not my main goal, and because of that I'm plugging it into an auxiliar output in the monitor...But whenever I try to record using the e4, by plugging into the usb hub, it goes through the iPad, it records, but it kills my speakes, they go completely mute and I can only listen to anything through headphones plugged into the E4...I've tried everything I could and can't seem to find a solution. Thank you for the attention.
@@danielguerralopes Oh man, I only ever connected it to my computer.. not sure what it could be, doing it that way. Hope you find a solution or answer!
Thank you for your invaluable tutorial. My E-4 arrived about an hour ago, without instructions, and this video is providing the information Roland should have put in the box.
@WaveBits This video was PERFECT. Pulling the trigger on this box today. Thank You man !!!!!!! You have no idea how I’ve been struggling with vocals in my Synth Set….. so close to being “gig ready”…… this will put me much closer.
Well done dude but I have lots of questions concerning how to use all AIRA COMPACT synths in parallel and what must be done to make it properly. Why because sime funktion coud be out of Control for example TEMPO etc. And it is nothing to see in documents regarding how to use all tgat 4 parts in parallel, isn't it?
Thank you for the very informative tutorial. I've just got into the Roland Aira Compact Range and purchased the E-4 (and J-6 & T-8). It's a great little vocal effects unit that thankfully does not need a computer to use it.
you can sort of COMBINE THE REVERB, ECHO, AND DELAY…for example your setting for reverb will stay when you switch to delay or echo and so you just keep layering its beautiful eventually ❤
Thanks for taking the time to create this video. This seems only useful when you are NOT on a computer. It does not do anything that built in or plugs for a DAW would do much much better and every midi device has knobs and sliders you could map to do the same thing with physical controls. Maybe for some live situation or recording on your device, but if you have a laptop why would you use this?
When I was began watching videos on this new series, I always dipped out as the E4 was highlighted. After this video I want to buy one of these for everybody in my family.
This is like a next Gen vt4 imo. I think the voice effects combine more and better in the E4. The looper and scatter are new. I watched this vid because I was wondering if the E4 would replace my VT4. The only thing I would want is more vocoder waveforms. If I was starting over, I would probably get the E4, but idk if it is different enough to replace the vt4.
Very neat video! A lot of fun hearing what this device is capable of, and I still haven't seen too many UA-cam videos using and talking about the E-4. Would have been nice hearing Chorus, Harmony, and Vocoder without the Autopitch engaged though, to get an idea of how those effects sound on their own. That's my only criticism. Other than that, it's a great look at the device.
Great video. Quick question. Is it possible to have the voice passing through the E4 with no processing at all, effectively dry? I am getting an autotune effect even when none of the effect buttons are lit and the looper and reverb are off? Thanks.
Hey... I'm totally not clued up on this stuff ..Al I know is I want something to go with my boss speaker to change my voice with a delay for effects in a live sessions ... My question is ....do I have to have desktop to use this? Or can I run through my phone?
Hello guys, I’ve been looking for a vocal processor (mostly for autotune but I understand other features are generally included). I was drawn to this product but got a bit disappointed it did not have an XLR (perhaps that is an unjustified judgement). I’m looking for something that is easy to take to gigs but can also deliver studio quality recordings (kind of like the TC Live although that one seems pretty outdated). Does anyone have any personal reccomendations? The more natural the autotune can sound the better it would be for my case. Let me know if anyone has an answer :)
Very good overview, thank you. Is it me or do a number of the effects mode have a flutter (or chop) to them? I know you were doing things on the fly without trying for perfection, so I’m curious. Looking at vocoder devices and was considering between this and the minifreak. If you’re familiar with both, any thoughts about quality or usability between them? Thank you, either way!
I think its because of the scatter effect. Im also looking to get the E-4 or the minifreak. I have seen the minifreak tutorial and the vocoder is super distorted.
Best Tutorial my problem is getting the Airas when linked to record together in garage band i can only get one instrument to record at a time anybody know this fix?

can Roland E-4 be used for live stage performance? i've tried it in studio for live band performance, but i got some distortion to the output speaker. how to mitigate/minimize/or even to remove the distortion coming out from Roland E-4 during live band performance?
I was thinking the exact same thing! The harmony demo made me imagine the possibilities, especially running the looper as well and maybe stacking vocals through the daw.
AT 22:00 is the looper recording the voice and the music ? If so is the mic just picking up the track from the speakers? Would have been cool if it had a tempo control so you could play the loop at specific BPM's
Can Roland e-4 be used for live stage performance? I ever tried it with my full band performance (of course with loud sound environment) but the e-4 created huge noise / distortion unexpectedly. Is it common for e-4? Then it’s only designed for silent studio (?)

Do you know if the E4 can pass the MIDI THRU from my iPad to another hardware synth?? I want to use as an audio interface of my iPad but I'd like to use my sequencers apps sending MIDI THRU the E4 straight to my other synths. Is it possible as there is only midi in/out in the back....
Great review! I received mine last week. I was hoping you could answer a question for me as I didn't find my answer in your guide. I really want to be able to change the internal tempo which seems to be locked at 130bpm (which it displays on startup). This would be helpful for changing delay and scatter rates. I couldn't find anything in the manual regarding this either. I'm guessing that it can be changed by one of the other Aira units via the sync in port but I only plan to have this unit as a standalone. If you know or can find out more on this could you please share with me? Thank you!!
Hey Jeremy, as long as you’re not in a Menu the biggest knob at the top-left that says “Tempo/Value” will change the Tempo. Hopefully it’s working for you!
Nope the E-4 doesn’t have this knob.. It’s only on the other two Aira Compact devices.. I was wondering the exact same thing.. Great review btw the best I’ve found so far 🤘
@@Sinesquares My bad! I thought this was a question on my other J-6 video. I think you’re right; the E-4 can’t change tempo but can be controlled externally from a Roland T-8 for example and it should tempo sync to whatever you set the T-8
@@WaveBits no worries! Yeah I couldn’t find it on the manual too.. I guess it can receive clock front the computer if it’s hooked up via usb though, right? I’m getting mine today to save the world from my ridiculous singing 😂
question I have a TC electronics pitch pedal that allows you to plug in a source for the only purpose of setting the key. then the pedal can track to that source and then effect your other signal...I guess like a vocoder? can this do that?
Yes! Direct Input instruments and effects will always have benefits. It allows you to be hands-on, tweak things live, experiment with physical sliders unlike a plugin that you will have to map to a physical controller or automate. I find benefits to both. Plugins are great for on-the-go while physical hardware is great when you have the time and space to experiment. Purely for tuning quality (if that's what you need though) I'd definitely recommend Auto Tune Pro X, because you will get a much cleaner sound and the Flex Tune that helps adjust your pitch correction response to work with sustained notes.
I prefer this thing over any other budget vocal processor i have seen so far. BUT and that is a MAAAASSIVE BUT, it has no option to save presets?? That is such a massive bummer
I am stuck! I have tried to connect to Cubase 12 and not getting any sound at all! It’s driving me mad now have been trying for about 4 hours and can’t deal anymore with it? Any one have it set up with Cubase 12 how did you get it working?
how would i hook that up to my focusrite solo? ( which is my soundcard ) could i even use both at the same time? or would they conflict being that they both are usb audio devices?
Microphone and guitar run a different levels. It will never worK or the audio will be terrible quality. Get a direct box (cheap ones go for about $35), plug the guitar into it, and the output of the box into your mic preamp. That’s solution I found.
You have to be careful with feedback though. I've used a condensor mic and a dynamic mic feedback is problem especially when you use it with other synths at the same time ( real world situ) , the vocoder on its own is not that great you need a midi keyboard to do this better. Also reverb and chorus can be awful with the feedback problems . Not sure what to do with it tbh
