    Many years ago, while licensed as a rock-bound Novice, my 10 WPM CQ was answered at a speed I could barely copy. I sent ? QRS 10 and the OP increased speed! I struggled to copy, but finally gave up. Later, I heard the same OP doing the same thing with other Novices. Lesson learned: some OPs apparently enjoy being jerks -- ignore them.

    • @cyleleghorn246
      @cyleleghorn246 Місяць тому +1

      @@ItsEverythingElse I agree that's true, but it's more work to even figure out how to do it. I know a lot of people who don't take radios or the FCC seriously, none of them bothered to pay for any license or take any tests.... They definitely won't be spending $100-$300 for a digital radio and figuring out how to program it to interfere with (or even do) anything 😂
      I think the complexity, at least for DMR, the one these types of people would WANT for the encryption support, rules out at least 95% of the potential bad actors from ever getting to the point where they could do anything bad with a digital radio. Same issue with cost applies to d-star and fusion radios.
      If someone wants to mess with you, they'll buy a baofeng and hold down the ptt (possibly on a random channel) or maybe if they're feeling extra nefarious, they'll buy a VHF jammer from AliExpress. It'll be the bottom tier of effort, but it still might work and not even digital radios can surpass it if you can't change to another band

      @@tinwhiskerSC that's probably a functioning alcoholic or drug addict who used to have their life together enough to pass the test, and nowadays they're just getting drunk or high and going on the radios lol. Trust me, I know some pretty smart people that could use a Walmart walkie talkie, but they don't know anything about offsets or squelch tones that a repeater uses. Nor do they know where to find that info, nor would they spend the time to google it and figure it out. I think this has got to be a very small percentage of people, not a widespread thing. But maybe where you live it's different

    Heck yeah! ALL Seasoned HAM's rude to ALL NEW hams. Well let's be honest. Not all but a lot. Y'all, we, us, me, you.... Let's just be polite and try to help. My first time on 40 meters I was told (By some drunk A-hole) that my signal sounded Sh%tty! Come on guys. Use your teacher words and when you're drunk, get back on the Black Pearl and sail away back to Margaritaville!
    When I talk to new hams they are grateful that I do not berate them, be little them or just be rude to them. And when we hear others being rude let's all step up and call them out.

    Last week on our club net , everytime the NCS would call a members name and callsign, someone else would key up just as the member checked into the net causing terrible interference. This started from #20 on the roster and continued to the end of the net. A group of us switched to a ARES Simplex frequency and discussed what to do for next week's net. 5 club members were going to certain parts of the city to triangulate the interfering party's signal and turn him into the FCC. As it turned out when my wife was doing NCS, the problem station wasn't causing any issues and the net went smoothly. 📡

One of the first few days I hear 2 guys bashing a guy because they didn't like the way he talked, totally bashed the guy for a radio check. Said that if he didn't know his radio was working before he asked for a radio check he was a moron. These are the very guys and reason I quit listening the first time. If there's an unlicensed operator on a repeater, I'll tell them to clear the frequency because it can result in a fine.
    For the past year and some change, there has been a qrm'r on a local repeater. Intentionally causing interference, using obscene language and such. I filed a complaint with the FCC several months ago and only got one email from them saying, it's being looked into. Haven't heard anything from them since. I've been keeping a log when the interference happens, if the FCC will get back to me.
    When I'm on FT8, I'm looking for DX contacts. I put CQ DX in WSJT-X, but there's a lot of poor operators that are just county hunting and think it's ok to work someone who's looking for dx contacts. I have gotten so tired of it, I work FT8 manually.
    As far as SSB goes, there's a few that like to run amplifiers and splatter as much as 5 KHz above and below where they're at. Seems like very few stations these days has never read the ARRL Operating Manual. Regardless of what people think about the ARRL these days, there's a basic etiquette section that everyone should read.
    Just my two cents.

    My negative radio experience didn't happen on the air, but rather when asking how-to questions of experienced hams. I am self-taught with no ready elmer, so I sometimes pop into a forum to pose a question. When I asked for tips on tuning my Wolf River Coils antenna for POTA, several people said variations of this: "POTA is ruining radio. Activators hog too many frequencies. I can't even get onto 20M these days because of all of this POTA business. POTA is all wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am and not a proper QSO. All your wires tossed into trees are messing up the state parks." That's not to mention the absolute negativity on all ham related social media. In the end, I've honestly mostly given up. I haven't turned on my radio in over a year (I looked it up my last contact was 07-Feb-23). The hobby overall is very negative with the exception of YT (and even here can be extremely negative) to the point it's deteriorating my mental health participating, so I've mostly given up.

      I have a friend that wasn't aware of said person and responded to his beacon. Immediately he was taken for a ride on the idiot train. It got so bad I piped in and informed my friend that he was talking to a nefarious lid. Then the beacon became unrailed on me. Later on I talked with my friend in person about his experience. He thanked me for stepping in because was unaware of "The Beacon of 10 meters".
