The BEST things about living on a Narrowboat? A Chocolate Factory by the Canal! Ep. 90

  • What's one of the BEST things about living on a narrowboat? Finding a chocolate factory by the canal! As we explore Britain by Narrowboat we're heading down the Worcester & Birmingham Canal on our way to the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, but you know Colin can't resist chocolate!
    Leaving Birmingham we cruise in narrowboat Silver Fox alongside the railway and into Bournville, the home of the Cadbury chocolate factory. From there we head left at King's Norton Junction and onto the north of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal.
    We enter Brandwood Tunnel with William Shakespeare watching down on us from the north portal, then pass through the suburbs of Birmingham including the Mediterranean looking Dicken's Heath before mooring up at Illshaw Heath for the day.
    Catch-up on every vlog, from the beginning, in order, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat:

    Love the swan chaseing sequence! My dad used to live on the East side of the Brandwood Tunnel back in the 40's & 50''s. They used to swim through the tunnel. It was country side back then and people used to come out of Birmingham to spend time by the canal. To the north of the canal was a huge asylum called Monyhull Colony that had over 1000 patients in the 1950's mostly working on farms and in gardens. Apparently, the patients used to have air rifles and shoot at the kids playing by the canal so the kids made a huge catapult out of a tree and car inner tubes to shoot house bricks back... simpler times! The farms were sold in the 1960's and the towerblock jungle of Druids Heath replaced it. It's hard to look at it now and think back to what an Idle it was when my dad lived there.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  4 роки тому

      OMG! It sounds like something from a weird 1950's movie. Brilliant! There were a few youths with an air rifle hanging around when we were there too. Strange coincidence!

    • @miketipping1583
      @miketipping1583 4 роки тому

      @@FoxesAfloat Monyhull was founded by a gun manufacturer in the 19c so not saying they encouraged gun ownership among the patients but... Birmingham has a long history of Gun making - it has a gun quarter. My grandmother spent the war testing riffles by shooting them off the roof of the BSA factory (next to the GU in Small Heath)

    We're in the final weeks of summer. I'm sitting back sipping on a Bailey's on ice, feet up, watching your vlog. Life is so sweet. You guys make it sweeter just seeing all the beautiful scenery and your infectious charm. People have probably said this before but, it's like I've known you all, all my life. Not a fan of large crowds although I love people. Like that even in my 20's. I'd go out to discos have a few drinks then get up and dance until the clubs closed. ninety percent of the times I would dance by myself, totally zoned out. My partner and I would have been living in the U.K now but the pandemic put a stop to that. We both still want to get married there. But the upside of it all, I have a link in your beautiful vlogs and always feel on top of the world. Sending my love to the both of you and may you always rise up to the challenges before you and please know, you two have made this world a nicer place to live in

    Where do I start? I've spent most of my life in Birmingham, spent some 7 years working at Cadbury's in Bournville, and spent many years coaching at a running club that regularly trained on the towpaths of Bournville, Selly Oak and Kings Norton.
    On top of that, not only would you have passed us moored at Lyons Boatyard, but I've spent much of today taking a helmsmanship course along parts of the North Stratford Canal featured in this video.
    So, not only an informative video (I didn't realise that was Shakespeare above the entrance to the Brandwood tunnel) but a local one for me. Having said that, we plan to leave next Friday for our first cruise to our new home mooring at Mercia Marina, on the Trent and Mersey.

    Watching a 500 kg bath of milk chocolate being stirred was mesmerising.

    Brings back memories, my parents lived in Bournville, a lovely 'village'. I went to school behind their house and in later years owned my own business in Stirchley, just down from Bournville station. I did loads of work for Cadbury's but, not in their factory. They own a lot of properties on the estate that I looked after for them. And I got the cheeky allowance to buy their factory 'seconds' which they sell from the onsite shop!
    Did you know that there are no Public Houses in Bournville, which I believe, was of by the order of Mr Cadbury himself? There is a working man's club, again just up the road from the station and the Bournville club itself!
    Nice to see that again. Thanks for the vlog!

    We're from the U.S. and we stayed dear friends in Birmingham several years ago. Their house was directly across from the woods where King Henry VIII hunted!! I did a lot of research before going and Cadbury was a must, the tour as great AND they give you candy bars before you start the trip, what an amazing treat. We all walked along the canal one day, so I know some of the scenery your showing, that is so exciting! As always, I feel like I'm on Silver Fox with you 💗

    Great vlog guys. But, is it just me? Bloody graffiti everywhere!!! Why do people (and I use the term loosely) feel the need to deface everything that's so beautiful? Each vlog gets better. The music soothing and perfect. You must spend a great amount of time listening to music to be able to match it with the video. Always a perfect match. This old woman has taken much from your videos. I am the Colin to my partner's Shaun. I rejoice in you both. A loving scratch on Dillon's head. Love and hugs to you both. I agree that there could never be enough trains. I love them. I've taken up your saying of 'trains' whenever one goes by and my family look at me sideways thinking 'what is she watching on UA-cam now!' I took my children to the Cadbury Chocolate factory in Tasmania in 2005 and they gave each one of us a huge bag and we walked along all the production lines filling it up with chocolates. A good time was had by all!
