Dutch Dakota crash kills 32

- A vintage plane carrying aviation enthusiasts crashed at September 26, 1996 off the Dutch coast shortly after its pilot reported engine trouble. All 32 people aboard were killed.
A small flotilla of navy and fishing boats headed for the wreckage of the 55-year-old DC-3 Dakota soon after the 4:45 p.m. crash. But would-be rescuers were hampered by mist, fast-fading light and the tangled wreckage of the plane.

25 september 1996: Dakota ramp, Waddenzee, Den Helder
Na de start van Texel krijgt de enige nog in Nederland vliegende Dakota DC3 PH-DDA mechanische problemen in de linkermotor. De motor wordt uitgezet, maar de piloten slagen er niet in de propeller in de vaanstand te zetten. Daardoor wordt het toestel moeilijk bestuurbaar. De bemanning probeert een noodlanding op het marinevliegveld De Kooy bij Den Helder te maken, maar het toestel raakt in een duikvlucht en boort zich in het ondiepe water van de Waddenzee, op de zandplaat Lutjeswaard, 18 kilometer ten noordoosten van Den Helder. Alle 32 inzittenden komen om.
First time I saw a Dakota was in a little know Dutch movie named "Dakota (1974)" by Wim Verstappen.
The high point of the movie is that the director bought a real DC-3 for $75,000 (about $450,000 today).
Unfortunately the movie flopped, costing the production company about $1.1 Million in today's money.
Really shows early Dutch movies didn't have much of a budget anyway.
But they did fly the Dakota extensively during shooting of the film.
That way I learned, as a kid, that a DC-3 cargo plane could refuel its own tanks, provided the crew had taken a few extra barrels with them. With a handpump and a hose, fuel could be transferred to the tanks while flying.
Very sad as the Dutch have a special love for this plane, many Dakotas were used to help liberate Holland in WW2 dropping troops and dropping supplies to the Dutch Resistance. R.I.P. those who were lost :(
