Tips for new players: -play on master difficulty (you take but also deal more damage, makes enemies way less spongy) -you can unload weapons you pick up by right clicking them in your inventory -aim for the head, always -at the very beginning, pick up every gun you find. Even if you already have 20 pistols, you can sell them to buy ammo/medkits -quicksave after every kill and occasionally when moving from place to place, it will eventually become a habit -the knife can kill the strongest mutants in 2-3 hits -stealth does not work

The thing with knife hitboxes is, it has to touch the opponent with the contact point. For swipe, it's the middle. For the stab, it's the tip of the blade. And you can't literally hug the characters in this game so you'll always have a small forcefield inbetween you and them, making you miss despite being at the closest distance if you don't use edge alignment properly.
First hour in vanilla SoC I made the mistake of thinking a pistol would be accurate and kill of 3-5 shots instead of emptying the whole magazine to stagger a bandit.

Played SoC 5 times, CS 3 times, CoP 3 times, once each game again with the Complete mod, played Lost Alpha, all this in master, exploring every map, doing the whole main stories and tons of side quests. Watched 50+ videos of a youtuber playing Misery. Felt confident, knowing every part of the Zone. Installed Misery, started a gameplay on normal, started heading to Skadovsk, stopped inside a bush to check the area I was going to traverse and BANG, someone headshoted me with a sniper. First death with under two minutes of gameplay. To this day I have no clue on where the sniper was. Misery is brutal. Couldn't finish Misery and Last Day because I loot and stash every single kill and this mods crash after you have 65536 objects. Now playing Anomaly, finished 100% as an Ecologist, trying the UNISG storyline for a new challenge. Only thing I miss is to drive the car of Lost Alpha, that thing was way broken and funny.
3:12 In Call of Misery Last Day I always just low crouch (prone in misery) underneath the bars and come at them from on top of the tracks with the sandbags. It's usually bandit controlled though, not mercs. They still have that south outpost in the Cordon
How did you react the very first time you saw a fleshy piggy FLESHPIG with its bulging eyeball and its squealing pig-face?! 🙃 Btw, the sawed-off is wrongly described as a "beginner's weapon." Unless they mean because it's available early on. Otherwise, it takes experienced finesse to use effectively. You have to aim down the rib to be effective. This is one of those games that handicaps shotguns by making them throw loose patterns if you shoot from the hip, so you have aim down sights (or down the rib since no one bothered to drill and tap bead sights onto the ribs of those sawed-offs) all or most of the time. 6:08 The Fort 15 is the best pistol you can have for the way-early game. But pistols are barely useful. Really good for hunting snorks, and only if you enjoyjoy the sport of nailing them in the head with accurate aimed shots. And there are no snorks in Cordon in 'nilla ShoC. But Sid offers a mission to retrieve that pistol. I forget what the reward is. One thing you can do is use it til it's worn down, then get the mission from Sid and turn it in.
Once its soc they will work in kinda similar way. The way you play it depends on familarity with it. I started to play vanilla soc another time after years and it is so gg ez.. I just RUSHED with viper my way to lab in agroprom. Really. The game mostly depends on your firerate and ammo stock
a shotgun with 7 rounds is not more effective at long range than a pistol with 80 rounds. i don't know what games you're referring to when you say "that doesn't work in any game" but i'm sure they're painfully mediocre
Pistols are highly ineffecetive (sorry for possible spelling mistake) at long range simply because they aren't made for that sort of range. It doesn't work too well in real life, badly in everyday shooters like CoD, and usually quite horridly in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Best way to clear that section if you don't want to pay or sneak through the tunnel, is fire the shotgun to kill one or two guys, then run in and take the rifles they dropped.
