Incredible footage, thanks. Used to think only humpbacked whales will rescue other cetaceans from the hunt of killer whales, haven't expected the pilot whales, which are smaller than the killer whales, will do the same as humpbacked.
from what I've read and seen on YT, pilot whales drive away their orca cousins regularly. as in when pilot pods show up, orcas go silent and exit the area almost the same way white sharks vacate the area when orcas show up. I'm interested to learn more. with my current limited knowledge, I can only guess that orca are actually very cautious even when they enjoy serious size advantages over their prey, and pilot whales aren't much smaller than orca. and they also travel in pods. but iunno.
Despite pilot whale is smaller than an orca they have bigger pod up to +100 members so pilot whale can harrased an orca specially the long fin pilot whale
They are known to overwhelm orcas, actively chasing them away. It is theorized they specifically adapted that behavior because their ancestors were frequently attacked by orcas in the past.
Undeniably stunning footage (and an incredibly thorough written description of the whole episode as well). But also quite heartbreaking. I was hoping the "Cheetahs of the Sea" (pilot whales) might scare off the orca and rescue the Beaked whale from their brutality. Obviously they didn't or couldn't. I know the orca have to eat, but just wish they stuck to fish and seals instead of killing and consuming other whales and dolphins (sometimes seemingly just for fun).
Unfortunately our resident orcas do only eat salmon and thanks to overfishing and pollution our orca populations are almost extinct and their reproductive organs are suffering and their calves aren’t surviving. I wish they could eat seals and other species so we can share these amazing creatures with our grandchildren and great grandchildren, but at this rate that may very well not be an option
@@leahsyl81 Fortunately Orca populations are thriving in the American and Canadian Northwest. I thought Australia was the greener nation...but I guess that's only NZ.
That’s an incredible footage !! Not easy to know if the pilot whales are trying to scare the killer whales off to protect the hunted beaked whale or to protect their pod. Anyway this is just a precious treasure. Thanks a lot for sharing !!!
I love all sea creatures but orcas can be and are so brutal that this ripped my heart out! But pilot whales hunt octopus and squid so it's just all the vicious cycle of life kind of like wall st minus the blood and guts.
But orcas actually end up running away without eating the prey, search for the rest of the video, pilot whales stay in the zone until whale totally dies and orcas never appear again, orcas never gonna stay in a site with pilot whales since they can die in a really painfull way for the screams of pilot whales... Actually, thats thebonly reason why orcas are afraid of pilot whales, the screams of pilot whales are under a specific frequency that makes the orca brain to go brrr and cause immense pain in the head, orcas can just run away from this, even if they try to reaist at first like in this one, this white whale end up being food of sharks in the full video.
Yes the orcas might have smaller pod some are bigger but even a dozen orca with there size and weight looked like the one was going for liver area but two orca on the one dolphine you can see the strength and size is to much for dolphins they try to avoid orca pods some biologists say I still can't get the image of the 60 year old grandmother orca who blindsided a great white shark on national geographic she is moving so fast and is huge the shark didn't have a chance she hit it so hard it had to have got a concussion unbelievable size and weight and 60 years old and moving like it hit after burners wow that was a great video
@@TheDarknessDragonAre you serious? Please tell me you were just being silly otherwise I guess you deserve 5 minutes of silence in respect of the loss of your brain😂
I saw no cruelty nor brutality. The orcas were determined to feed themselves and the rest of their pod. With some types of orcas being in danger of extinction, this whole process is necessary. I think the pilot whales came along when the beaked whale was too far gone. Videos such as this do not bother me. Now videos of whale and dolphin hunting and orcas dying in captivity...that bothers me.
@@JustMeDocI agree with you!! We’re losing our resident orcas in Vancouver because of low salmon population and pollution! I wish our orcas could eat other things but they don’t and they are sick and almost extinct. This is nature and they need to feed their families
@leahsyl81 I saw that one of the newborn calves went missing. So incredibly sad. I think the government at all levels have failed these orcas by not expediting a resolution regarding the salmon. Humans can eat other types of fish to prevent the extinction of the Southern Resident orcas. #justagirlwholovesorcas
@@JustMeDoc How is it now cruel or brutal to be eaten alive and left to bleed out? 😅😅😅 Yes Orcas need to eat, but that doesn't make it any less cruel or brutal lol

Pilot whales are not talked about enough.
Everytime I read about pilots. They beach themselves.

Apparently Pilot Whales will fork up killer whales according to UA-cam of course
I noticed an Orca going for the Pilot's right fin kinda like biting a rudder.

Orca and Pilot whales have almost equal in size.

The fact that the hunt was a success in spite of the interference is incredible. Orcas really showed their intelligence in this footage.
