    Just bought this mower yesterday. My 50 year old Lawn Boy finally wouldn't start, so I figured it was time to go electric. Really appreciated how much less this machine weighs compared to self propelled. Its just 10 pounds more than my extremely light Lawn Boy. Waited for the battery to fully charge and mowed my front yard. It's still early and only some of the grass needed to be cut on a higher setting. After doing both halves of my front yard there were still 3 bars on the battery. I'll be anxious to see once the grass is more even and my much smaller back yard needs to be cut too. Mower was similar in maneuverability to the Lawn Boy but I appreciated the extra wheelbase that let me span a couple water channels. Unlike you I found the mower quieter than I expected. I had to wear hearing protection with the gas mower, and didn't feel like I needed to with this mower. All in all I really like it so far.

      I had being using the mower battery on a leaf blower so it was only 3/4 charge when I attempted to mow the yard. To my surprise I got it all done and still had 1/4 left. With my previous 17" Ryobi it would take full 2 - 4Ah batteries and a bit more from a third to get the same job done. Like you, I'm looking to see how it does as the lawn fills out. I do like being able to shut it off to reposition or move items out of the path since it just an instant start. I have used a Sears, Toro and Honda mowers before and by far this Ryobi is a pleasure to use. Thank you for sharing and watching the video.

    Happy to finally find a video showing this mower. I know this model is new for this year and there isn’t much videos on it. I see many videos on the more expensive 21” self propelled Ryobi mowers but a lot of people don’t need something so expensive and fancy. This video has helped me make my decision to buy this mower. Good to hear the video was helpful in making your decision. I was just using this mower and thought it really doesn't need to self drive as it is so light to begin with. I have an irregular yard that requires a bit of navigating, but not a chore since it weighs so little. If you get a chance let us know what you think of it.

    We got a sudden flood of Fox tails, a dangerous weed that can go into pets' skin but does not come out without a fight, so I can mulch until Foxtail season, which is now, and then I must bag for the remainder of the season because Fox tails are an invasive species with no known herbicide that works on them whatsoever. I tell you what I have this mower and I can't complain. I have a big yard I mowed both of my neighbor's yards My front back and side with one six amp hour battery. I just wish it had a light like my other Ryobi. Anybody would like this mower very powerful, folds up very easy to stow away in your shed or garage or closet. The height adjustment is very easy. People complain about battery runtime I don't get it cuz mine mowes a lot of grass before I need to charge it. If you get the quick charge you'll like it even more. Anybody that buys this mower will definitely be happy they bought it. Robust easy to use mulches very good bags good battery runtime is good height adjustments very easy and also very easy on the wallet. I could go on and on and on but just don't take my word for it go out and get one You won't be disappointed. Why get it an expensive ego when you have Ryobi that's cheap and does the same job. Bought this mower this weekend. My first electric so I am fairly impressed. I think it is very light which makes it easy to maneuver and I find it pretty quiet. I like the single height adjustment lever and that it's a 3 n 1 and comes with all the attachments included. The one problem I have is that if you back up the flap goes under the machine and get stuck. It appears the rod flexes and it pops out past the bottom of the deck and gets stuck that way. Have you experienced this problem?

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  2 роки тому

      The back flap on the Ryobi seems larger than what I recall on my old petro Honda. When I back up part of the flap folds under but once I start moving forward I hear it pop back into the proper position. I'm a bit concerned if all that flexing will lead to a the flap tearing at some point. This is my third time using this machine and the flap never hangs up, same for the Ryobi 17" mower.
      Thank you for sharing your experience.

    • @1willyvon
      @1willyvon 2 роки тому

      Yes, the flap makes a bit of a popping noise when you go from pulling it backwards to pushing it forward with the mower's height setting appearing to define how loud it is. This mower is quite a bit louder than my Neuton CE-5 (see my comment on it's replacement with this Ryobi), specially with the original Neuton CE-5 sound limiting blade installed. The CE-5 was my second Neuton of the same size using the same battery packs as my original Neuton EM 4.1 Purchased ~13 years before my Neuton CE-5. The newer blades have slots cut from the rear edge to the center line of the blade just beyond the cutting edge from the end of the blade, that effectively cancel a lot of the aerodynamic noise produced. willyvon1-willyswill.blogspot.com/search?q=neuton

      I have the same style mower but mine is self-propelled (RY401018). I love this mower and the cut and mulching is great. It mulches leaves pretty good. My older Greenworks 80v did not do well with leaf mulching. I too have the problem of the rear flap going under the mower when backing up. It seems to be a problem with the flap rod bending or flexing in the middle. Sometimes it releases with a loud "pop" and sometimes it stays stuck for awhile. I think I might have a solution for the rear flap issue, I will be trying it this weekend. Our cutting season is basically done so I only have this weekend to try it.

    Just wondering if this unit has a flex to the deck? I had and returned the more expensive 40v crosscut model and if you push down on one side of the handle or picked it up from the back with the handle the front of the mower flexed bad enough to cause the blade to contact the deck.

      I park my mower upright and unfold it to roll it down a step, and I have not noticed any flex in the deck. A shame they use the same model number when they keep updating the models and some of the features are different. For example, unless you used a battery powered mower before and it is quieter, my unit is whisper quiet. I have a riding mower and a corded electric from Lowe's. Both are an order of magnitude louder than this. The only noise is probably from the blade spinning against the air and the grass. Unless you insulate the deck somehow, you can't make 2 blades cutting through air at high speed be any quieter. The unit also has dual (multiple?) speeds. It sense the load and if it starts to bog down on taller grass, it increases speed, with a corresponding increase in sound (though still not even close to requiring ear protection). When it gets too bogged down (probably a current sensor), it just stops. One thing I have noticed is that I got one unit that appeared damaged in shipping, got another unit, and both of them had no magnet for the battery cover to lock onto. There was a space for it, so not sure if they stopped using magnets or have factory quality control issues.

    I am not sure that a runtime test with no load is really indicative of actual use

    • @cfldriven
      @cfldriven  2 роки тому

      Alvin, it is not, but it is the only level playing field. The runtime listed by the manufacturers are no load lab test to achieve the best numbers, so in this video we did the same thing minus the lab. Our number was 8 minutes longer, meaning their runtime is very close to what the battery and mower can achieve with no load. To do actual use runtime, we would need a lawn of a known standard depth, type and size at a certain air temperature to get a meaningful number. The result of course would only be applicable to that lawn and conditions. If all the manufacturers tested to a certain standard then the runtime number would actually mean something, like they do for automotive MPG. Ryobi's runtime numbers for the 17" mower were not achievable with multiple no load test. ua-cam.com/video/3Lr3f017uOA/v-deo.html
      So at this point we know a no load test achieves results that are similar to the marketed runtime for only this particular model, but actual use will be use. How much less depends on lawn type, height, wetness, size and air temperature.

    This is what I bought to upgrade from a 14" 24v Lead acid battery powered Neuton CE-5 mower I purchased in 2014.
    The Neuton brand is DEAD as of ~ 2018 so whatever goes bad on the CE-5 is almost certainly terminal at this point, 4 years into brand death!
    The HUGE draw of the Ryobi mower is that it and the included accessories sell for $299 at Home Depot, or ~ $328 with Cook County Sales tax. That is ~ $100 less than I paid for my Neuton CE-5 in 2014 before the shipping! I picked my Ryobi up at the Home Depot Countryside IL store.
    The downside for me is that the very small part that is supposed to be installed in the little round hole at the top of the Ryobi Mower's battery chamber per the magnetic latching pair to hold the battery chamber lid closed IS MISSING! I put a post on the Ryobi Tools Facebook page about that and copied the text of it to a facebook message to them .
    I got to try the mower out today and it cuts my mowing time and 73 y/o manpower workload in half!
    I think it actually weighs less than my Neuton. That 240 watthour (24v x 10AH) Neuton Sealed Lead acid pack comprises AT LEAST 50% of the Neuton's operating weight. and is several times heavier than the 6AH 40v (240 watthour) Ryobi Li Ion battery pack that came with the new mower.

    • @cfldriven

      Well yes and no. While the no load test doesn't give real world numbers, you have to realize that mowing runtime can vary widely based on type of turf, height, temp, etc. There isn't a standard that we can compare against, which leaves us with a no load test. The no load levels brings us closer to a level playing field thus allowing you to compare. Will your machine achieve the no-load number, like the government MPG rating your your time will vary. Although with the no load test I can tell you the Ryobi 17" runtime on one battery is only 17 mins while the Ryobi 20" is closer to an hour with its battery. If I need at least 30 minutes for my lawn, I just eliminated one of the two. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain and thank you for watching.
