Patterson as the heel. He would eventually "come around."

Pat Patterson used a foreign object.
It was an import and NOT made in the USA! 😉

In what way? Backlund was an NCAA wrestling champion and legitimate tough guy. Also, many wrestlers, including Greg Valentine, Kevin Nash and Ken Patera have nothing but praise for Backlund's in ring skills. Sure, he was a dud on the stick, but Backlund was a great wrestler who could get as rough as anyone.

Howdy doody was given the belt, it was a mistake to give it to him! He could not on his best day have beaten Billy Graham, who should have retained his belt he was a better champ in shape and great with a mic in his hand! Howdy had the personality of a dead horse!

@@garyandrews1486 You're kidding right? While I loved Superstar Graham he was a stiff performer (average at best). Graham's best asset was his mouth as he was one of the greatest ever on the stick. Incredible. Another was his drawing power. He WAS great at generating heat and yes, he was a cash cow, though Vince McMahon Sr. (and other promoters for that matter) didn't know what they had. He was 20 years too early. Backlund also drew well (this is also documented by other wrestlers) and as I said earlier, he could wrestle and defend himself against any shooter. About the only ones who really didn't want Backlund as champ was Bruno Sammartino and Graham himself for obvious regions. Bruno said he had nothing against Backlund and thought he was a good wrestler, but he realized the drawing power Graham had.
I agree, Backlund was not very good on the stick (until his heel turn 10 years later), but he was what McMahon wanted. Backlund would have probably been tabbed the world champion in the AWA had he stayed. The ONLY mistake was that McMahon should have kept Graham as champ for a full year, but at the time he was considered a transitional champion. Say, what's your beef with Backlund anyway? Did he put you in a Cross-face Chicken Wing? Very effective hold.
