Chain has to go in this order or it won't work due to the way the signal flows through the master (top to bottom): #1 - Peak catching limiter (Limiter 1) #2 - Compressor #3 - Fresh Air #4 - Maximizing limiter (Limiter 2) If you reverse limiter 1 and 2 you'll get a trash distorted sound because of the bottleneck
@@notmazy I used pink noise and span (vst) years ago before I quite understood mixing/leveling… no artist/client/associate is going to want to sit there in the room while you mix into pink noise, imagine how annoying that would be lmao. Learn to use your ears and mix/level as you go. Most drums are already equalized and made to sound good as is (unless your using busy works beats kits) lmao 🤣
One thing I noticed a lot of people leave out of mixing tutorials is panning. Panning is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT when mixing. It gives all your sounds space. You really want only a few things going directly up the middle.
@@TaylrDNoise i like my melody atmospheric and very stereo (stereo enhancer or fruity chorus it is), 808 and kick should be merged into the middle, clap/snare just slightly to the side and hihat a little more panned to one side. works for me👍🏼
Something I learned from using the PINK NOISE method and feel should be explained here is that if you have it on too long, when you take it off it will be perceived as sounding leveled and mixed well. I read somewhere that it produces ear fatigue and how the fletcher munson curve makes us perceive sound after hearing something for extended amounts of time. My recommedation is this if you use the PINK NOISE method, turn the master volume down to mix at a low level. And put the master track in mono while you do this. Ive gotten the best results this way. Dope tutorial by the way!
Lots of people try to overcomplicate mixing & mastering beats but it's pretty simple. (This was a great tutorial btw) 1. Level the sounds 2. EQ the sounds so they have their own pocket 3. Put on a limiter to get a radio ready sound. 4. Now terms of just mastering SSLComp, Kramer Tape, L1 + Ultramaximizer are my favorites from waves. Sure there's a ton more plugins out there but I found my process & only takes me about 5-10 mins to mix and master a beat
i dont understand much in terms of mixing and mastering. but if is that simple i dont understand why even big producers say they cant mix and master their own song and ppl study like music engeneering for years.
@@BTWIMNO thats because the term "mastering" is thrown around too loosely nowadays...mastering should only be done ONCE, thats after vocals have been laid down over the beat. So mastering is genarally not for beat makers and their beats. Think of mastering as baking. The beat is the dough or the crust. Then the artist puts the toppings on it. Then the whole thing is put in the oven and "mastered". You wouldnt bake the crust(beat) then put the toppings(vocals) on it.. then put it right back in the oven... As a beat maker, our job is to mix the beat perfectly. Then leave the mastering to the engineers who have been studying the science of mastering for years. I hope this helped
I learned so much from this, especially since I had no idea how to use the limiters on the master. So I never really messed w it too much but this helped so much so thank you
Imma be honest, even though he says “it’s not that big a difference” if you pay close attention, the difference is “big enough” to constitute a mixing decision that actually makes it a that much different. It’s the little things that really make mixes magical
Just wanted to thank you for blessing me with these, all my beats really sound crisp, clean and loud after this (tip: this works great with uk drill beats)
Thank you this is very helpful! I’ve been at a dry point in beat making where I can’t get anything to slap! Thank you for the refresher. It is very helpful
If Putting a kick in that beat turn the 808 down to about -6 or -3 and kick at 0, even tho I don’t mix my beats with drums loud. My kick normally peak around -6 and 808 at around -12 and my mastering gives me the loudness

Back here for a second watching, this is the most straight foreword mixing tutorial ive EVER SEEN! I spent thousands of hours reading forums and watching UA-cam tutorials to learn Logic Pro over the past 10 years. Most of the other “Tutorial” videos just seem like a way for producers to promote their new drum kit by the end of the intro I’m already bored of the video. You the man for making this fam 💯. I’m switching over to fl studio and while the concepts of mixing and music production in general is the same the workflow is much much different. I’d totally take a love child of Image Line x Apple where the daw has the workflow of Logic but the sound engine behind fl. Fl drum do in fact hit harder and are just thicker and crispier. I know its a debate but after hearing my drums for years, day after day in logic, then switching to fl, i could instantly tell a sonic difference. The drums are just THICKK AF and H I T like a brick to the face without any effects or editing. I struggled for years trying to get my mixes to sound like the producers i was listening to and could never get it, and i always thought it was me. You should have seen the smile on my face when i finished my first beat in fl and got it sounding better than anything ive produced to date, with MINIMAL effort. what ive been doin lately is sending all the drums except the kick and 808 to a bus with sausage fattener and put it on at bout 13%, then on the master use the fruity limiter and either use the ceiling or the sat knob depending on how hard i want it to hit, the sausage fattener really makes the top nice and crispy
Thanks man, u hepled me a lot fr fr. Many other things that I had in mind do make sense for me and are clear now after this vid. What should the volume of the laptop/computer be on? Are mixing on full volume?
