A Lovely show indeed Bang Bang Boys! I live in Lancaster County and born in Lancaster. Do I have a Leaman gun? No! But do I want a 15 pounder? Well I’d certainly place in my collection. As a cabinetmaker and restorer of period antiques I have seen faked curly maple more than once. But hey, I’m sure it looked preddy in the hardware store. Kind of like wood grained plastic in a way, eh? Thanks for sharing this gun and restoring it as well. Boy, that trigger with a pound of rust? I’d say you saved it in time. Many Blessings and muzzle some of your powder in that Leaman when you shoot it for we fans! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

    Nice video, once again.
Now I would like it dig out my three to further investigate them, and conserve them.
Marks Novak’s videos on conservation and restoration got me interested in working to conserve my collection. To that end I designed and had fabricated a Stainless boiling trough capable of dealing with the barrel from a Springfield 1795. The trough sits on top of a two burner Camp Chef Stove. I first built one out of Home Depot sourced metal rain gutter as he described in one of his first rust conversion videos. Anyone that still thinks of “patina” as a desirable characteristic needs re-eduacating.
In your research have you run across a treatise on screw threads used on 18th and 19th century firearms. The Whitworth screw form dates from the 1840’s. The USS standard of screw threads was proposed by William Sellers in 1864. I admit I have not gotten to far into researching this but I am curious. I have read that the French had a standard for their firearms and the US arsenals may have adopted that standard when they started producing arms. When I messed up a trigger guard nut on a 1880’s production Trapdoor I was lucky to find a suitable tap on eBay based on information from the trapdoor collectors website.

@@garrettfromsmokeinthewoods Too some extent I have been guilty of benign neglect. No worse that what the collection received in West Oakland living in a closet for maybe fifty years. Then they lived in a closet in The San Jose area for twenty five years. I have had custody for about thirty years. I put them in gun socks and keep them in a locked container. Not as easy to get at for some as I might like but secure.
I have some experience dealing with cold humid environments. The railroad I volunteered at for about thirty years was a mile from the coast in Santa Cruz County. At times the water condensed on to the Locomotives and machine tools. We could have rain come off the ceiling in the metal building that was the Car Shop. I can only imaging the problems that occur East of the rockies and especially on the East and Gulf Coasts.
The loss of the Railroad due to the CZU Lighting Complex Fire sort of sucks, but it is getting me to "do the maintenance" on my gun collection.

I heard that the 18th century Prussian veterans can achieve a rate of fire of 5 shoots minute by using their self-priming musket. By pouring the black powder into the barrel directly, the powder would automatically enter the pan through the half-round groove and the conical touch hole.
While the Prussians convert all of their flintlock muskets into percussion musket, there are still some self-priming flintlock muskets around the world that use similar system. If you are interested in testing the rumour, I can send you a email with the drawings and specs of Norwegian M1794 musket, which use a system similar to the Prussian muskets.
As for how the Prussians load their muskets? You can check the videos of Austrian M1784 musket on YT. Mind you though, the self-priming breech used by the Austrians are quite different from the Prussian one.

Thanks guys. Always like to look at the old Lemans. Never owned an original but I put together a 54 Leman replica in the late 70s, promptly accidentally dropped it out of a tree on rocky ground and shattered the stock, rebuilt it in chunky half stock, then eventually rebuilt it again with another full stock and set triggers. Over the years my old gun has accounted for a good number of white tail and has never failed to fire nor hit what you're aiming at.i always liked the fit of the old Leman style guns. Thanks for the video.

Preach brother! 🙌 Jeremiah Johnson was a great movie but I blame it for all of the "Hawken" repros (which incidentally, most of the "Hawken" rifles today look more like Leman style rifles than true Hawken guns) walking around a rendezvous out here in the west and not enough NW trade guns, trade rifles, Military surplus, Kentucky/Pennsylvania rifles or shotguns seen at events. All of which would have been way more common than a true Hawken brother rifle. Great video
