  • On the late 19th century American frontier, large .44- and .45-caliber cartridges were considered the epitome of handgun ammunition for self-protection, home defense, and hunting. Black-powder rounds such as the .44 American, .44 Russian, .44 Colt, .44-40 Winchester, .45 Schofield, and .45 Colt enjoyed a well-earned reputation for effective terminal ballistics, accuracy, and reliability.[4]
    At the start of the 20th century, Smith & Wesson decided to celebrate by introducing a brand-new revolver design which they called the New Century.[5]
    Smith & Wesson wished to pair their new revolver design with a worthy new ammunition chambering.[5] At the time, smokeless powder was state of the art in ammunition technology. Older black-powder ammunition was in the process of being converted to smokeless. Smith & Wesson's popular .44 Russian cartridge had established a reputation for superb accuracy and was a renowned target load, and they decided to use an improved smokeless powder version as the basis for the new round. Due to the lower energy density of the early semi-smokeless powders, prior efforts to convert the .44 Russian to smokeless had produced less than stellar ballistic performance. Smith & Wesson addressed this issue by lengthening the .44 Russian cartridge case by 0.190-inch (4.8 mm) and increasing the powder capacity by 6 grains (0.39 g).[6] The resulting design, which S&W called the .44 Special, had a case length of 1.16-inch (29 mm).

    Back in the early '90's I was asked to leave an indoor range for shooting .44 Special BP loads in a .44 Charter Arms Bulldog. I cranked off 3 rounds in rapid succession and the bass effect from the muzzle blast was knocking things off the pegboard display on the other side of the wall. I was told to cease fire and put it away and NOT to bring it back.

    44 special is my love language. I like the round so much I have 3 different revolvers for it. A ruger flattop 44 special with a rw grip bisley grip frame, a Smith & Wesson 21 3" barrel with herrets trooper Jordan stocks,and a usfa 5 1/2 " with the really nice dome blue and case hardened frame. I shoot a revolver match with the usfa loaded with lee 200 grain at Russian velocities. I use snake shot every year all summer long. And either the 246 g round nose load or keith style bullets 900 to 1000 fps for everything else that might present the opportunity. As always great video good to see you guys again.

    Revolvers revolve. As they revolve, they are unburdened by the empty chamber in the cylinder that just revolved in the revolver, so that the revolver is unburdened by that past emptiness.

    Handloading manuals say the Triple Lock is not appropriate for plus p loads. That is good enough for me.
    There is an assumption being made here that the Triple Lock had the same Harding and metallurgy of a 1917.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  9 днів тому +2

      technicaly there has never been a saami +p loading so no manuals officialy give the skeeter load for a non 44 mag revolver. just keep in mind elmer keith and the 44 Associates regularly pushed the triple lock up pass 28,000 psi. the gun could always handle it. i have also read quite a bit on the triple lock and i have never seen a change in Hardening or carbon between 1896 and mid 1920s.

      @@Real11BangBang Between the extensive writing of Skeeter Skelton and Elmer Keith on the 44 Special in the S&W Triple Lock, if either one of them had experienced a "come apart" we would have definitely heard about it. As a matter of fact, Mr. Keith was famous for exhibiting the guns that he tested to destruction and I don't recall ever seeing a photo of a destroyed Triple Lock. Mr. Keith was definitely hard on his shooting irons! The firearms world owes a great deal to men like Skelton and Keith. Their names come immediately to mind when I hear the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants." We will never see their like again.

    Close, but not quite. The 45 Colt has always been loaded with 40 grains of black under a 255 grain bullet. What you referred to as being 220 grains over 28 grains of black is actually the 45 S&W Schofield round - which was indeed adopted....... as SECONDARY STANDARD. This leads to why the 45 Colt is referred to as the "Long Colt" - because the soldiers didn't want the Schofield round (unless they actually carried the S&W), they kept asking the supply sutlers for the "long Colt round" ....... thus the renaming to "Long Colt" simply through constant use by the soldiers.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  7 днів тому +2

      actually the military never officially used the 40 grians outside of some very early testing. it was 28-30 grains and a 255 grain bullet from the start for them. the Scofield round wouldnt actually work in the colt as the rims were to wide and would over lap so you could only load 3. in 1882 they replaced both the 45 colt and the 45 Scofield with with a new cartridge just known as the 1882 45 cartridge. it was 230 grain bullet on top of 28 grains. so misspoke when i said 220 grains. so yes as i said by the end of the 19th century the us army was loading the 45 saa down to 28 grains and 230 grain bullet and never actually used the 40 grain charge.

    Personally for me I think 44 special specs should be bumped up a bit to atleast 20-21k pressures. Keeping it at 14k just seems ridiculous considering how many guns from that era were handling high pressure cartridges and showing little to no issues.

    I dearly love the 44Spl. I shot my heavy reloads out of a Ruger flat top, 4 3/4. A very informative video. But you ought not exaggerate recoil. There is no way the recoil, even one handed, would leave the gun higher than head level. You have used your own strength to lift the gun 18 - 24 inches after the actual recoil. I don't like that. It doesn't impress anyone other than non shooters. I've seen others do that in a failed attempts to make viewers think the loading is a lot stouter than reality. Other than that I did enjoy watching.

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  8 днів тому

      this isnt exaggeration. what this is is leting the gun recoil then tossing the barrel up so my thumb sets back perfectly on the hamer for a faster follow up shot. in cap and ball revolvers i do it to dump the cap.

      @@Real11BangBang Sir, I see that now. I really am sorry for making my ugly comment, not just because I was so very wrong, but also that I have no standing to make a negative comment to someone who is unselfish enough to offer your knowledge on this topic to others. I don't offer this as an excuse, but since I've been stuck in this wheelchair, I have no few times violated those principles I have held on to since Christ intervened in my life and accepted my soul as vauable to Him. I have already talked with my Savior about this and other not-so-nice character changes since unrelenting pain has accompanied me day and night. The heavy pain killers no longer offer much relief. In a vain attempt to think of other things I sit here and watch gun videos. But bark at you I did. Maybe you will accept this apology. If nothing else, your calm response brought home that no one owes me anything and how rude I was to make a negative comment. I reckon all that sounds like I'm sorry for myself and that any offense I commit should be overlooked. Not so, not so at all.
