  • Terry Venables was remembered as “the inspiration of a generation” as tributes flooded in for the former England, Barcelona and Tottenham manager following his death at the age of 80.
"Terry was the greatest manager, if I may say this, of his generation." - says former FA boss David Davis.
Venables made more than 500 appearances for Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace, but would go on to make his real mark as a coach, also taking charge at Palace and QPR.
The nation rallied behind Venables’ England team at Euro 96 in the summer football came home as the team brilliantly blew away the Netherlands 4-1 - Venables himself described the performance as “perfection: my most thrilling experience in football” - only to lose to Germany on penalties in the semi-final at Wembley.
The Football Association marked the passing of “a true football icon” and said: “Our modern game mourns the loss of not only a great character but an innovative, forward-thinking manager who was an inspiration to a generation of English players and coaches.”

The 1996 Euros were really nothing for special. It’s weird the England bang on about it all the time as if they won the bloody thing. They won 2 games out of 5 and lost the semi. Big deal. The French lost the other semi and they never mention it- complete irrelevance.

Yeah some of those players went to Portsmouth FC. As he was chairman for Pompey in 1997 if memory serves me right he brought it for £1

As young apprentices 1968-72 we used to have lunch in his dads pub, Terry, if he was visiting his dad he would take our orders at the bar and serve our food in a back room and then would sit down and chat with us and ask questions about our jobs. So affable and humble I wasn’t surprised in fact delighted to see his post football career develop. The best manager ever and a disgrace he wasn’t retained as England manager.

there's a lovely story about Terry when aged 17 and whilst on holiday with his parents at Butlins in Clacton on Sea,he entered a singing competition (he had a good voice) and got through to the final but Chelsea the club he had signed for aged 15 wouldn't allow him to compete as I presume it overlapped with the start of pre-season training.Does make you wonder,if it hadn't worked out for him in football,we could have been celebrating the career of Terry Venables as a singer, recording artist and all round entertainer because I'm sure he would have been a success in that as well.

People tend to have selective memory.
Venables should have done time. Rose-tinted glasses doesn't obscure the facts.
    Just stating the obvious!!!!

Nice little tribute there eh, son! The guy was one of the best England managers we´ve ever had. The footballing establishment and others in the establishment are dodgy f*ckers with mega money, but we hounded out a guy that could have got us success in order to do some virtue-signalling (Harry Harris was pretty busy!). Fkn tax havens etc etc with trillions of dollars worth in them (and nearly half of them are UK overseas territories!)
