The only thing I am a bit confuse on is their goal over all with the Quest Pro - or should I say Quest Enterprise. Just seem like a mix bag of things thrown togather as one display and then try to curve it with the idea that it can replace the current desktop for business work. Yet, they don't really support PCVR (not gaming, but I mean the idea of what PCVR is). I would figure if that was their twist they would have show off more demos of it working plug in (to get around that 2 hr limit) and really showing off stuff like USB-C over DP or something similar. Or the idea on how they are baking VD into their software more to really give you that desktop feel with more meeting + co working without distants. For example, working at the desk with the headset with a few windows up using Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and then a call comes in asking how the reports are going before then switching to meeting room mode where they show off the current reports and other things that user was working on. Would've been cooler, but again, I am not really sure how eye tracking and face tracking really would've help for all this... just seems like extra that maybe wasnt needed for this goal set? At least for face tracking that seems more useful for the community than productivity. Eye tracking is a bit hard to nail down if its needed or not just because it does allow for more features, but at hte same time, who is going to really be programming for them when Oculus 3 for example wont be getting it? As a business owner, I can tell you we do look at features and price - but we have to look at it as who will be getting what for what reason. Normally money makers will get better hardware over people that just do paper work. While I know there are a few places where we could spend the moeny - it doesnt replace the cheaper monitor we can get by the lot. That's where they still need to look at feature dropping across different models would come in handy if they ever just release more than one headset with different goals in mind.

There is another, less pessimistic possible side to the depth sensor drama that people may not realize: with the recent rapid advancements of computer vision AI there is a new belief among some experts starting to get popular (originally started by Tesla years ago) that computer vision/cameras are getting so good you may not need (or even want) some of the other sensors - not just for BOM cost reduction, but because the sensor fusion may actually do more harm than good - you can literally degrade the results by integrating more data from other sensors that isn't precise enough or even if not degrading - not getting enough benefit for the complexity it introduces and complexity is always a negative thing that slow progress and maintenance down. People who never worked on tech projects often don't realize that sometimes having more stuff isn't better even when it's free. The first controversy in automotive industry was about LIDAR (turns out moving cameras can create incredible depth maps too and often higher res) and surprisingly one of the biggest proponents of LIDAR in cars from Uber now changed his view 180 and agrees with Tesla and sees lidar as a dead end...Tesla then removed radar and now is removing ultrasonic sensors from their new cars as camera CV started doing better and better job. The writing is on the wall. Meta could look at research data from their labs and notice that it's not worth it with how good new CV algorithms are getting. It could also be a big gamble etc. The biggest weakness of cameras is the lack of light situations, not a problem for cars which are legally required to have lights on at night, but for HMDs it would be nice to have full tracking in darkness...

Yeah elon has been saying this but most experts disagree completely on this. There is nothing more pure than data from a sensor that is built for that. Its not direct, and can have flaws.

I really didn't like the increased resolution at the centre of vision. It sounds like the lenses distort the image so that the centre of the lens covers more pixels (like a small fish-eye) to increase resolution there. Obviously the image is rendered opposite to remove the distortion but that sounds to me like even things like reading will require you to move your head from side to side.
I'd like to see in person but it really feel like it could be a very annoying feature (and also doesn't bode well for dynamic rendering based on eye tracking).

    • @blizado3675

So first of all it's probably important to consider that the panel resolution of this device will more than likely be closer to 2160×2160 rendered at 1800×1920. Once I heard that meta confirmed the controller battery life is more like 5-8 hours and that you can get more than 1-2 hours on the headset if you just turn off the face tracking feature (coupled with the fact that you can still charge the headset with a 3rd party USB battery device without having to use a wire, I figured I need to get it just for the pancake lenses and 37% pixel increase. For me, whether it's simulators, watching TV, games, browser, the pancake lenses are a must to get rid of a multitude of display issues including those blurred lines on the edges of everything. Also I do believe that there will be optional 120hz experimental feature adopted within the next couple of months once Zuck realizes its not just companies buying this stupid thing. It was so ridiculous that there wasn't one mention of using this specific piece of hardware for entertainment, simulators, games, fitness in full vr. The potential is definitely there even for gamers. Yes, you'll have to give an arm and a leg to buy one and yes, you'll have to buy some separate accessories but the potential is there for this thing to be used outside of commercial business.

After hearing the battery life of the controllers isn't 1-2 hours and that the headset battery can be extended to more than the Q2's if you disable the pro features I caved and bought it, even though I'm still kicking myself over paying that extortionate price. I just really wanted pancake lenses (fresnel artifacting is seriously the only reason I don't use my headset to watch stuff), the extra comfort and those self-tracking controllers. I appreciate I could've just picked up a pico for the pancakes or the controllers on their own to pair with a Q2 but I wanted both benefits.
While I'd like eye and face tracking....
    a) 1-2 hour battery life with them on
    b) What you mentioned about it not even currently being transmitted to PCVR
    c) Even if it does get PCVR added, there'll be almost no support for it outside of stuff that already does it. I can't see VRChat's iffy eye and face integration seeing significant improvement just for this niche headset
Honestly, I think the Q3 not having eye and face is probably the right choice if it's going to kill the battery that badly while also bumping up the price so significantly and if can't be used in PCVR then it's super handicapped anyway.
Honestly, I would've preferred it if the pro had dumped those too and either been cheaper or put the money from those features into just about anything else.

A few things to think about- 1.) Quest Pro is not Enterprise focused in the sense of Corporations making bulk orders. Enterprise doesn't go to Best Buy to shop for supplies and while the Business tools (support contracts, lease plans, multii-device docks, enterprise security integration, etc..) for Quest Pro may be coming, out of the box it has access to the consumer Quest 2 ecosystem and app store, has no features to clear it for Enterprise use in most Fortune 100 companies. Make no mistake, Quest Pro is being marketed for pro-consumers NOT Enterprise. In the same way Apple sells an iPhone Pro and an non-Pro model. It's very interesting Meta themselves don't understand why the Smartphone model should not be applied.
They would probably just tell you "Enterprise support features are coming". Ok, why launch without it? That's the continued theme with Quest Pro. The face and eye tracking too glitchy to use (according to Carmack himself), the Mixed Reality supposedly a disappointment... I guess the hand and eye tracking will be available in Horizon Worlds and Workrooms at launch? This was never promised... The software that runs on the hardware defines the use cases, so the software really defines the product and Quest Pro has no software to make anyone want to buy it.... Meta could have waited longer and had compelling apps to show. Why didn't they? Probably because they want to beat Apple's MR headset to market... It's the worst product launch in the company's history.
I have no faith left in the company at this point. Will be putting 100% of my XR development focus towards Pico 4 and whatever Apple eventually releases. I'm done with Meta, because Mark Zuckerberg is not the right leader for the company anymore and yet he refuses to move on and he has the shares to continue to run in into the ground. I believe he wants so badly to see his vision through that he will stick with tunnel vision to the point he bankrupts the company. He has good intent, but he needs to hand it off to someone else and take a chairman role.

The price point is very high not because of the number in a vacuum - 1500$ would be dirt cheap for a Varjo Aero with controller and inside out tracking - it is high for what the Quest Pro ended up being. The AR aspect appears to be lackluster (2d cameras, distortion, weak color fidelity), the oh-so expensive to make eye tracking equally problematic with no use short of animating avatars ?! (no PCVR, no foveated rendering ? ..for now), lowered refresh rate, lower resolution (compared to Q2), pancake lenses that aren't earth shattering anymore (Pico 4 and all future HMDs most likely for much less, not a premium feature anymore).... that's hardware wise. The fact that they're extremely opaque over their tech spec is also extremely worrying. Software wise they haven't shown a single demo that would convince an enterprise that their device make sense in a productivity setting. In fact, their 'demos' were very similar to MS Hololens proof of concepts a few years back. Where I'm frustrated isn't because it's not looking like a great upgrade to the Q2 for gaming, it is frustrating because it gives the impression Meta have no idea where they are heading and that's terrible news for VR overall.

This legit seems close to some sort of espionage, but I don't know what laws it could break. If I didn't think that ByteDance already had someone on the inside I'd strongly believe them being so close behind (/forward in some cases) is attributed to those leaks.
As for the video I am happy that I saw this after all the shitstorm videos about QPro because despite me not really wanting to buy this headset in the first place I was initially excited by those controllers. 1hr battery on controllers rumour really bummed me out, but seeing as it might not be true and it might be much longer I'd definitely consider bying them for my Q2.
