I was planning to challenge myself to do exactly this in January anyways, so this is perfect! I recently did a huge kindle ebook unhaul and deleted books that I had grabbed when they were free but know I’m never going to read. It was such a relief to see a more managable amount of unread kindle books.
I’m also challenging myself in 2023 to read as many physical books off my tbr as physical books I haul each month (counting all hauls even if I’ve already read them). If I don’t “balance the books” then I have to unhaul the amount needed to balance it out. We’ll see if I can stick to it 😅
I did the same where I did a massive unhaul with all of the free ebooks I’ve picked up and know I’ll never read, and seriously how much less stressful it is to look thru my list now is worth all of the work
I had the same idea this year to read my bookshelf full of unread books instead of buying more or getting library books. I have about 37 on my list. Also, I made a reading schedule for each book depending on the number of pages to keep me on track 😁📚
I love the read 10 get a book. That is something I really want to try. Also can’t wait for you and Shae to hang out. I found your channel because of Shae and love you both. Hope you guys have lots of fun
@crimiolly is doing a very similar challenge this year, that is also open to the community. It's fun to see people coming up with all their rules and ideas for how to rock this challenge! Good luck with your goals!
Love this! I’ve been going through lots of unhauls and it has reinvigorated my love of reading so much. I’m doing a light version of this challenge in the beginning of 2023 where I’m aiming for around 50% of the books I’m reading in a month being ones I own and the “new” titles only be books that have been on my to read list for over 2 years. It’s been really helpful to be brutal with what I’m DNFing and just deleting from the list because my ultimate goal is to only have titles on there that I’m truly excited to read and not on there just because they’re popular or I feel like I ought to read. Love that you and other content creators are doing similar challenges cause it helps motivate everyone to be more mindful about what they’re picking up! ❤ 📚
It helps a lot! I have been slowly going through what I own and updating a library tracker I have to see what I really have and don't want to read anymore 💖
Me, 365 days of the year for the last 10+ years: *buys books once every 2 years and only ever reads from my shelf* Me seeing this video: OHH!!! I defo wanna do this and join in! A lot of manga series are pretty long so maybe... every 4-5 volumes you can get a new one? Or if it's a super long series (like one piece) then ever 10 volumes?
😂 your a very rare reader if your that responsible with buying and reading from your shelf! I’m definitely curating my full rules now especially around my manga reading 💖
What a great idea! I am hoping to join in on this challenge though a good chunk of my physical books are packed away in boxes so I don't have a fully accurate number of books unread but I have been meaning to reduce some of the books on my Kindle and borrowed Kindle Unlimited, some of which I've been meaning to get to for a while. I'm a mood reader so this should be.... interesting.
Here through a link from Stef at the Noveltea Corner - I was planning to do a version of this challenge before I saw her video to get my unread Kindle library down to a manageable level (long story short: it got to 500 titles earlier this year with the oldest unread book being one I bought in 2014 - it's now down to 470 with the oldest unread book bought in late 2015, and I want to get it under 400 by the end of 2023!) I'm basically going to have two rules for mine: 1/ '1 in, 3 out' - ie, for every ebook I want to buy or get as a freebie, I need to either read or DNF-and-delete three; and 2/ I need to either read or DNF-and-delete the oldest unread book in my library each month. Hopefully, Rule 1 will make me less tempted to keep picking up freebies 'just because they're free', which then just sit, cluttering up my library and obscuring all the books I actually genuinely want to get around to reading but keep forgetting I own!
I love the rule. It will definitely help shrink your kindle library! I know mine is well over 500 but I also need to start going through the freebies and get rid of them 😅
I think I'm going to try! This is similar to what I want to do in 2023 anyway, so hopefully an easy challenge. Also the 'no new KU downloads' is HARD. I also go through borrowing and returning the same things over and over, as if there is some urgency rofl 📚
I have the same problem with KU so I’m reshuffling it on the 31st and then sticking to it til I hit a reward 😂 but I’m so excited to see what you manage to read 💖
This sounds so fun! I'm already doing a slight challenge in that my physical tbr is so low and my ebook tbr is so huge that I can buy books, just only physically hahaha I can keep my ku check outs rolling in and out just no new purchases which should curb down my tbr!!! This sounds like a fun addition!
I need to get a full count of my physicals because I think it’s pretty low but I might be surprised 😂 but that’s the perfect modulation to a challenge like this too 💖
I'm so excited to see how you do Chelsea!! I agree I can't do a full ban and be successful. Plus sometimes there are planned reading vlogs etc so we have to adapt 💖
Love this idea. I hadn't even thought about my KU/ Kindle library. I am going to limit my reading to just what I have physically and anything downloaded to my Kindle by Dec 31, 2022 for the first three months of 2023 with two exceptions: Prime free monthly book and BOTM. Cause I love getting my BOTM each month.
I honestly don't think about my Kindle library enough and that is part of why I wanted to do this 💖 I love these exceptions that is a perfect way to satisfy the new book urge too.
I'll be joining in (probably for my physical and KU unread books) - let me know if you need more co-hosts, otherwise I'll just be here cheering everyone on! 💖
Yes!! I can’t wait to see how much you read and of course I would love to have you help co host! I’ll be putting together sprint schedules and other stuff soon 💖
This is wonderful! I am definitely going to be thinking about how to navigate it for myself. Just going to go ahead and say I get a splurge at McKay's Chattanooga in January!📚📚
Love this idea and would definitely want to help with sprints! Apt timing since I just went to HPB and got some new books. But definitely also doing this as a TBR challenge to clear out my goodreads
Definitely looking forward to this. It's to bring down my ebook #. I don't think I want to know how many I actually have. I do occasionally go in and just delete some that I know I'm never going to actually read.
I have slowly been updating to track what I own and plan to delete some of the very old ones I own at some point. I only know because of how my kindle shows read/unread 😂 and it's too much
I'm in. I've been on a challenge of my own these last couple of weeks. I've been trying to clear out my KU and Libby before the new year. It's moving along but not as quickly as I like because I'm a huge mood reader. With that said. I haven't requested or downloaded any new books. I'm literally forcing my self to mood read through what I already checked out. It's quite hilarious. When we make a copy of the tracker, will it update with any changes you make? I don't Google Spreadsheet a lot and wasn't sure.
The mood reading makes it the hardest! The tracker won’t update with changes but I will post in the discord if I make any updates to it again before January! I think I have everything set up for it unless I find a weird error 💖
I will defo do this, I am just about to start my own booktube channel in January called crimson's Whispering Books so if I can I will tag u when I do the video... But since I am just going to be starting I don't know how useful I will be of getting the word out
Hi. Speaking of the spreadsheet you created, can you make one that covers an entire year? It was really easy to use, and I'd like to use it as a tracker for the whole year instead of just 3 months. 📚 Thank you.😄
Oh i didn't update it here! I added the updated one that does a full year. It's added into the description. I have a new version coming soon and news on the 2024 version too 💖

Yeah mood reading is going to be the most difficult part for me too 😂 I’m determined to get this down some though!
I will join in. I have so many owned unread books.
It’s like the best and worst thing 😂 I love knowing I have options but also so overwhelmed

My never-ending battle! I'm currently working on getting my physical TBR down to 10 books.. currently still over 100..
It truly never ends 😂 I’m hoping this challenge helps me tackle more of it in 2023
I like the library hold and KU rule. I definitely need that one!
My holds get way out of hand but also they so often are long waits 💖
I was planning on reading more books that I own in 2023 in general. I love this, I'm in.
Yay! I think a lot of us are feeling the build up of all the things we haven't read over the last few years 💖
this is such a good challenge, I have over 300 books on my tbr shelf and I just keep reading library books instead.
😂😂 the reading of library books is real I do the same thing. I’m hopeful this helps me trim down my unread owned and library holds.
I think I'm going to try! This is similar to what I want to do in 2023 anyway, so hopefully an easy challenge. Also the 'no new KU downloads' is HARD. I also go through borrowing and returning the same things over and over, as if there is some urgency rofl 📚

A good handful of us are adopting it for the rest of the year too and the discords moderately active if you want support! Good luck on your challenge!
