You are such a great example of a “busy” person that doesn’t get caught up in the toxic productivity and busyness that is so prevalent on social media. I think you are right about just getting in the habit of doing it. Great video Shelly.
That is why i like both of your channels so much! I live by the motto to not be busy, but still be challenged and growing. It really is a wonderful life without all that unnecessary stress
The last few years, I have been reading primarily for enjoyment and am reading more than I did when I read what I thought I "should" read. I love a "can't put down" book! I enjoy readable books more than enlightening ones. I think some of us think a reviewer knows better than we do about what makes a good book. I now value my own opinion more that that of a reviewer. I also watch Booktubers with similar tastes to mine for new suggestions. No TV is another big help 🙂.
Your family is beautiful love 💕 Fantastic tips and tricks Shelly. I love what you said about ‘reading time as being me time, it is a way for me to be healthily selfish’ That’s exactly what it is🙌 You covered all the points that help me read more. Endlessly scrolling on my phone and cutting out watching TV was a huge help in my reading journey. Thanks for sharing this and it’s a pleasure when we get to see informative and fantastic videos from you😊
Your family is beautiful. 😊 As with so many others, reading is a top priority in my life. It's a necessity. My daily average is just over five hours a day, some days only one hour (travel and adventures; I'm an expat), other times eight hours. I don't have littles at home and I don't watch TV. As a homemaker I do have the time and am filled with gratitude for it. 😊 Thank you for your friendly and thoughtful videos! I appreciate the time and effort they must take.
Thank you for sharing! I love that the tone of your comment is full of gratitude. Your reading ebbs and flows and I love that! Thank you for this lovely comment.
Reading while tired is a bridge I’m trying to cross now. I can be dead tired - then something, some unexpected external event happens - and then all of a sudden tiredness evaporates. So I’m trying to learn how to harness this fact - shake things up (or sometimes a brief power nap) and then get back into it.
I like how realistic you are because I am a single mom of 3 and a high school English teacher. The nature of my job requires that I read A LOT and that makes me mentally exhausted most days. Most of my reading is done in July and early August when I really get a holiday from grading essays. I like your tips because they sound like what I do sometimes but there are times when I don't read for even a week and that usually makes me a little sad. Thanks for sharing your hacks. The most impactful one for me is to observe my time, energy and situation so that I can capitalize on these. Thanks for sharing. Subbed!
This was such a wonderful video, Shelly! ☺️ Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks! Now having a full time job, I am definitely learning to read when tired.
Oh such cute little boys!! 💛💛 And dog! I agree. You make time for what you want to do. Phon scrolling is a huge waste of time! And I only watch TV if it's something I really want to watch (probably about 1 hour per week). Reading whilst cooking - yes! Always have an audiobook on while doing household chores or driving to work. Good tips 😊
When I still lived in Albany, I frequently spent all Saturday after services and Shabbos lunch by the pond that was my apartment's backyard. I also frequently stayed all day at the student center, and did a lot of reading there. Other times I walked over to the campus library and read until it was time to come back for evening services and the third meal of the day (kind of like a light dinner of leftovers). I think I did the most concentrated amount of reading in my life during the eleven months I couldn't walk, since I didn't have much else I could do but sit in bed or propped up on a chair or the davenport and read.
I'm so flabbergasted that you upload the very video which I'd love to watch. Actually I was trying to watch a video where all my queries could be answered.
You. Read. My. Mind. I was actually going to EMAIL you (since you so graciously include it in your info). I strive for 2 hours after dinner M-F. Sometimes I can only do 1 before the eyelids get heavy and I start reading the same sentence over and over. On weekends I can get in a good 5 each day!! Helps to have a significant other that likes to play Call of Duty! 😜 As a follow-up… I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on improving reading comprehension and how YOU achieve that. Do you highlight? Take notes? That would be a great “Part 2” for this subject! PS I started Bunny last night because of you!! ❤ About to dive back in for a good block of time today!! 💃
Yes! I'll definitely do a follow-up on reading comprehension, but the short answer is that nowadays I chat through all my bookish thoughts with several people on a daily basis. I'm really lucky in that way. :)
audiobooks and ebooks usually help me read a lot more. Sometimes holding the large 500+ page book psychs me out of wanting to read it because it looks so big - but on my e reader its not as daunting. I like listening to audiobooks during my morning/evening routine when things are very hands on. Sometimes I do tandem reading of the same book as audiobook and ebook.
Great video. Throughout the various seasons of life, our reading life changes with the tide. When I was raising a young family (3 boys in 4 years), completing a masters degree in education, and beginning my new career as an elementary teacher, my reading life looked quite sparse and bleak. It improved a bit as my career progressed and we spent copious hours at hockey rinks for 3 boys times 7 days per week. 🏒🏒🏒 I am now a retired teacher after 25 years, Grammy to 7 grandchildren who live far away😢, a wife and a homemaker. Although I continue to grow as a reader, I’m extremely happy with my current reading life. I do not watch any television. I do follow some booktubers, planning/goal creators, and Christian channels on UA-cam. I limit my time because…. Well, you know! I occasionally watch a movie or “show” on Netflix or Prime. I travel to see my grandkids and of course read a ton of children’s books with them. I don’t count them in my yearly Goodreads. Planes/airports provide a big chunk of reading time. If I’m visiting by car, I will listen to an audio book; however, I tend to rate them lower so I think I just like a physical book in my hands. When I’m home, I read at least 3-5 hrs per day. Other than prayer, Bible reading, and service to others, reading is my top priority everyday.
Thank you, Barbara! You and I have so many similarities in our lives. Schooling, teaching, children, and travel. My reading life ebbs and flows so much. Keeping reading a priority while also being gentle with myself is key.
I’m behind this year towards my goal of 200 books a year. Goodreads says I’m behind 11 books. I know I’m slowing down not reading as much because of internet emails, fb and YT. I’m at 77 books right now. Think it’s time for a reading marathon lol to get some catching up done.
I find there are books I can't read at certain times like I can't read denser books when I'm tired, because I won't take it all in and understand what I'm reading, but I am improving on that. I have pick and choose certain types book when in bed or during my 15 minutes break at work because some of my books need a certain kind of concentration and mindset from me to read them and take it in.
Oh yay thank you for taking my question! 🤍🤍 I definitely need to work on dnf’ing books more. I usually will try to force myself to get into a book or finish it so then I end up avoiding it altogether. A goal for me is to be more consistent with my reading and just focusing on enjoying it.
When people ask me, I always tell people that I read instead of watching TV.
Great answer!
I don't even own a TV and I still can't read much.
You are such a great example of a “busy” person that doesn’t get caught up in the toxic productivity and busyness that is so prevalent on social media. I think you are right about just getting in the habit of doing it. Great video Shelly.
I once heard, “I aspire to not be busy” and that really spoke to me. I know you are the same way, Gina. No toxic productivity for us.
That is why i like both of your channels so much! I live by the motto to not be busy, but still be challenged and growing. It really is a wonderful life without all that unnecessary stress
Reading every day is a must for me. 😊💙
Yes! Every single day!
A quote I have taught my children is ,"You don't find time. You have to make time."
That’s a good one! I also like, “We do the things that are important to us.”
I read wherever and whenever I can. There's no stopping me!
Ha! Absolutely!

I'm with you on enjoyable versus enlightening. Some books are so philosophy heavy or too seeped in style for my own taste. No TV is a game changer. :)
Your family is beautiful love 💕

Thank you, Kelly! I really think reading provides such a healthy outlet for me. I just love it so much (I know I'm preaching to the choir!). :)

Awe! Thank you!

Yes! That definitely happens! Sometimes I lean into the tiredness and send myself to bed.

Thank you so much! Yes, the endless scrolling is such a time suck!
Your boys are precious!!

Like you, I tend to focus the most on my reading when I'm forced to be immobile such as during my pregnancies.
Great video! I'm trying to wean myself from the scrolling!
You and me both!
I'm so flabbergasted that you upload the very video which I'd love to watch. Actually I was trying to watch a video where all my queries could be answered.

Haha, I salute you for not going for the cheap joke and inserting a Nike ad over your "I just do it" line!🤣🤣
It was so tempting. ;)
Miss your book covers
I’m sure I’ll get back to them soon.

Yes! When I need my hands, audiobooks are my best friend!
Audiobooks aren't reading, so no they don't, lol.

I need goals. I have yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals. Even just as a commenter being involved in the booktube community helps too.
Booktube is so helpful! :) The Community keeps me excited about my reading.
Books are more fun than tv. And booktube is more fun than tv. 😁
Yes and yes! Books for the win! 😊

Would anyone like to read The Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver? 😊
I just stumbled upon The Unsheltered at a library book sale and I passed on it. 🙈
@@Shellyish And I bought it on sale. ☺ I peeped inside, it's good..😎 I'm going to read everything by her.
I do the thing because I want to do the thing, it’s my life hack lol :)
HAHA! Basically, yes.
I think the bigger question is how you have three hours of time to read on any given day of the week? Thats a crazy amount of time.
Ha, true.
Oh yay thank you for taking my question! 🤍🤍 I definitely need to work on dnf’ing books more. I usually will try to force myself to get into a book or finish it so then I end up avoiding it altogether. A goal for me is to be more consistent with my reading and just focusing on enjoying it.
Thank you for asking such a lovely question. I really enjoyed answering it in my own way! :)
