  • A rocket touted as Japan’s first from the private sector to go into orbit exploded shortly after liftoff on Wed., March 13. Livestreamed video of the launch showed the rocket called Kairos blasting off from Wakayama Prefecture, central Japan, a mountainous area filled with trees, but exploding midair within seconds. A huge plume of smoke engulfed the area, and flames in some spots shot up. The Tokyo-based startup Space One did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

      It’s a private rocket. It’s not representing Japan. Just some corporation. The Japanese state has a very successful space industry with rockets that actually work. This rocket wasn’t teaching Japan anything new. The only people who can learn from it are the private company people that own it. Some fields should stay in state hands and not be open to the free market. Space travel is one of them.

    • @entity_unknown_

    • @entity_unknown_
      @entity_unknown_ 2 місяці тому +10

      @@johnbrown8570 but why do you assume based on one failure when that's a common occurrence in the launch industry ESPECIALLY from emerging companies that have a lot to learn, they aren't well-established space agencies, but they work with the space agencies and exchange data. I think it's a natural extension and continuation of free market innovation but I certainly wouldn't invest in launch companies. You forget Boeing and other companies in the industrial complet have already been building highly reliable launch vehicles for decades, but almost no launch company was successful on the first few launches.

    • @Rocket_scientist_88
      @Rocket_scientist_88 2 місяці тому

      @@johnbrown8570Disagree 100%. Here in the US, we have several private companies which successfully launch rockets. Uniter Launch Alliance (Atlas V, Delta IV, Vulcan-Centaur) has been privately launching rockets since 2006 with a 100% success rate. There’s also Blue Origin, SpaceX, Firefly, and others with successful launches under their belts - particularly SpaceX. NASA has Artemis now, which is ambitious but has been insanely slow in development. It has also been incredibly costly, they started working on Orion back in the 2000s and Artemis, I think, around 2012. It has already taken longer than Mercury through Apollo.
      Yes, JAXA has a very successful program but there is no reason to claim that rockets should remain state-level programs only. It should be privatized, and it has been successfully in the US. It will be in Japan as well.

Japan already has many successful rocket launches since the 1990s with their H-II, H-IIA, H-IIB, and H3 rockets. The H-II have 5 successful launches out of 7. The H-IIA have 47 successful launches out of 48. The H-IIB have 9 successful launches out of 9. The new H3 currently have 1 successful launches out of 2. I'm no scientist but it looks like the thrusters came off the launch pad too hot causing the rocket to shift of course triggering the automated flight termination protocol aka too explode but I'm curious to know why that happened so quickly? It did a lot more damage being set off so close to the launch pad.

    Did they activate the FTS (self destruct)? The rocket seems to explode all at once - not something you'd expect with a subsystem failure. Subsystem failures are usually propagating failures. In case this was FTS, I think they should have waited at least until the vehicle cleared the pad. The pad could have been spared.

      It's just a new private company from Japan developing the rocket that failed which does not have the same funding as SpaceX. It's not a Rocket developed by JAXA (Japan's equivalent of NASA). The H3 rocket has a failed first launch last year but a successful launch last February this year.
