Oh I was brought up with that saying . I’m Scottish but my grandfather was born in Canada, Black Dimond, Calgary. We have amazing photos with Mounties standing with Argentine gaucho, who had come with my family because they had settled in Argentina after leaving The Falkland Island’s, way back.we have photos of the family in Troikas in the Canadian snow. There upsetting photos of a big group of men in WW1 uniforms with a message on the back saying Charlie and friends, you can’t help to wonder who made it home. There’s many more I must let Black Dimond have copies of these pic’s.

I’m a Canadian Ex-Pat. The Scots are a wonderfully warm and welcoming, proud bunch of folks, second to none. I’ve worked in a lot of countries in the world, but Scotland is one spot where I could live permanently without any reservation. It’s a beautiful country, with welcoming friendly folks. Some of the best times I’ve had here is backpacking in the Highlands or fly fishing on the many rivers. For any history buff or history nerd, it’s an amazing place. The fact that I’m not Scottish at all but do play the pipes makes it way easier to make friends here.

I am Scottish and hold a British passport, however a bone of contention with me is that nowhere is my nationality acknowledged. It would be so easy to have the four individual nationalities recognised ie, Scot/Brit, Welsh/Brit, NI/ Brit and Eng/Brit. We as a United Kingdom have great pride in our countries and I for one would like to be known as a citizen of the country I was born in.

Thankyou again for another great video. My mums best friend was Scottish, she was possibly the friendliest, and funniest person I’ve ever met. My favourite story I heard about her. Was the day she went into Labour with her daughter. They gave her gas and air to manage the pain, but she took a bit too much, and got high on it. She then started dancing down the corridor, after the midwives and nurses had managed to pin her down, she gave birth to a healthy girl, but when shown her daughter, she said “Oh what a lovely baby whose is it?” She had no memory of giving birth at all 😂🤣

My university experience is nearly 40 years ago (St Andrews) and I agree with most of what he says I agree with. But it also applies very much to central Scotland rather than the whole country. The Isles, the Highlands and the southern part of the country in the Borders aren't all like that, there are parts which are right but I wouldn't apply it all to the whole of Scotland. There are parts of the country where people are a lot quieter.

    Scotland born and bred myself.
I was in the twin cities in 2015 and beside the hotel i was staying in was a church which just before i was to fly home, held a street fair with food, stalls ect. It was a ticket affair which i bought and as i sat down on a bench, i noticed a young lassie across the road selling raffle tickets which no-one was buying from so, i went across and asked her why - she started off by saying `As a black American i....` I stepped in at that point and stopped her and asked her why she said that ? I told her i`m a Scotsman and very patriotic about my Country and i`m sure she is about hers but, she`d no right to apologise for that and that she has every right to be there as much as i have or, the folks across the street have......Well, she took a couple of steps back, picked her chin up off the floor and gave such a huge hug that nearly separated me from my breath.
She told me she was selling raffle tickets for a community centre so, as she wasn`t selling any, i bought an entire book from her. She thanked me for saying what i just said and that no-one ever said that to her before.
I told her never to feel a need to explain the colour of your skin, it was the last thing on my mind when i 1st spoke to her, its not the colour, its what`s in your heart that matters.

The Scottish vs British thing comes up a lot. Mostly it's down to the person but there's also a big independence movement in Scotland and you'll find those who want to remain part of the UK usually identify as British and those who don't as Scottish. Naturally this isn't 100% true all the time but it's a fairly safe bet. Best thing to do is just to ask each person and that way you offend no one.

Hi, Happy Easter! I'm from Scotland, I live in Fife, just north of Edinburgh, you have to cross one of the Forth Bridges to reach us.
If I'm asked, I'll say I'm Scottish but that doesn't mean I'm in favour of independence but I respect everyone's opinion on the subject.
I'm very superstitious, my whole family are, right down to not cutting our nails on a Sunday because its bad luck lol
I've never been a drinker, I just never acquired a taste for it.
The other things he was right about is the spitting on the Heart of Midlothian which must confuse people who don't know the history of it and lots of people really do refer to us as Scotch, it's really annoying lol

If Scotland goes to join Europe, then that cant be named as independence, when i was educated, but racist against the auld enemy.
Remember Fife is the only Kingdom thats within the United Kingdom.

10:46 The Victorian-era Police Station which was the equivalent of the Tolbooth was built on the steep slope down to the Cowgate - the cells on the lowest level were notoriously unpleasant - dark, cold and dank. It was said that drunks and vagrants would deliberately walk far enough west or north to avoid being in the High Street Police District after nightfall.

My first paternal ancestor came to this country in 1646 from Scotland at age 18. He was indentured for 7 years to pay off his passage. After his indenture was paid he was given 10 acres of land in Virginia and 10 English pounds. He worked the land, got married had children and bought more land and sponsored other Scott's to come to this country. We have fought in every war from the Revolution to the present. We are VERY proud to claim Scottish heritage.

Billy Connellys World Tour of Scotland, I Googled it and it is available on DVD but in the UK it is region 2, I don't know if you are able to play region 2 DVD's, I know that the US is Region 1, its available on Amazon but I don't know if it would be available in the US, I watched it when it was shown and it was very informative, well worth a look.

growing up in Scotland we have a few traditions that I hope still exist (I now live in Australia) 1. when a child is born whether it is a boy or girl we gift them silver bracelets which is to ward off evil spirits. 2. When a child is christened we give out Christening pieces which is two biscuits with a silver coin if you have a girl we give the piece to a boy and if it is a boy we give it to a girl. 3. when there is a wedding and the cars carrying the bridal parties away from the church they throw coins out to the children gathered there we call it bowl money. 4 when someone has a new baby and takes it out in the pram most people stop the mother and put silver coins under the babies pillows.

That UA-camrs right. There's so many Scottish inventions you could easily do a whole video on just that. I've blown our trumpet a few times about it cause it still amazes me for the size of us a relatively small country how big a contribution we made to the world. But it's ok to blow your trumpet now and again right? Here's an Scottish poem about some of our inventions.
    Wha's Like Us ?
The average Englishman in the home he calls his castle, slips into his national costume ---- a shabby raincoat...patented by....
...Chemist Charles Macintosh from Glasgow, Scotland.
En route to his office he strides along the English lane, surfaced by....
    ...John Macadam from Ayr, Scotland.
He drives an English car fitted with tyres invented by....
...John Boyd Dunlop, Veterinary Surgeon of Dreghorn, Scotland.
At the office he receives the mail bearing adhesive stamps invented by....
...John Chalmers, Bookseller and Printer of Dundee, Scotland.
During the day he uses the telephone invented by....
...Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
At home in the evening his daughter pedals her bicycle invented by....
...Kirkpatrick Macmillan, Blacksmith of Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
He watches the news on T.V. an invention of....
...John Logie Baird of Helensburgh, Scotland.
And hears an item about the U.S. Navy founded by....
...John Paul Jones of Kirkbean, Scotland.
Nowhere can an Englishman turn to escape the ingenuity of the Scots.
He has now been reminded too much of Scotland and in desperation he picks up the Bible, only to find that the first man mentioned in the good book is a Scot..
...King James VI...who authorised its translation.
He could take to drink but the Scots make the best in the world.
He could take a rifle and end it all but that breech-loading rifle was invented by..
...Captain Patrick Ferguson of Pitfours, Scotland.
If he escaped death, he would find himself on an operating table injected with Penicillin, discovered by....
...Sir Alexander Fleming of Darvel, Scotland.
And given Chloroform, an anaesthetic discovered by....
..Sir James Young Simpson, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist of Bathgate, Scotland.
Out of the anaesthetic he would find no comfort in learning he was as safe as the Bank of England founded by....
    ...William Paterson of Dumfries, Scotland.
Perhaps his only remaining hope would be to get a transfusion of guid Scottish blood which would entitle him to ask-----
    "Wha's Like Us?"
