I just picked up a 2016 R1200RT Aussie Police bike. Our cops must be pampered because it comes with cruise, hillstart, lower gearing, second battery, 3 ride modes, dynamic pack, tyre monitoring, heat grips and seat. The bodywork is also pristine. No scratches or dents, almost like new...all this for $5900AU or 3752EURO
Wow that is quite the difference with the bikes here in Europe. Those are not outfitted with cruise control. They do have a second battery, lower gearing, TPMS and heated grips. Thanks for your comment!
Unfortunately the second battery is wired to serve the emergency lights that are normally removed along with that battery when a department sells them.
@@hawaiibikekahuna8204 Not here in Aus, they all come with the second battery. The radios, emergency lights and siren are removed, that is pretty much it.
In Hawaii we have horrible traffic and some wide shoulders. I wear the police helmet, use the emergency lights in amber and ride right down the shoulder the same as the police do. I am a former motor officer and cars give you a wide berth. The difference? In a car it takes me an hour and twenty minutes in a car, 25 minutes on the bike.
Well, it handles its weight very well Unless you maneuver it in the garage. But while riding it's feels lighter than it is! I agree, there is something special about that version I think, still very happy with it!
I own the same rtp frim the same year model. Ik like it very very much. It runs so great. Plenty of power. Suspension very nice. You can ride sporty if you want but rouring is aldo very nice. Commuting id perfect. Good weather protection. Just put your bag in the suitcase and go. No bag on your back. Lovely. Mine has 182.000 Km on ig but runs like new. And I like ig very much to ride a policebike.
@Mark - would you perchance know if the official BMW cruise control can be retrofitted to police RT's that didn't get it factory installed? I just picked up a 2007 R1200RT-P and that is the sole missing creature comfort. It's got heated grips, heated seat, and I just put the Aeroflow tall screen on it.
Thanks for this video. I just got myself an RTP. I’m having issues with the slow running of the bike. I bought it used, it’s idle is an issue at the moment, could you suggest possible solution? It trips off at idle speed
Very good review. Does it have a fan for overheating the engine in hot summer days? I have been told it it does. Any other special features, such as handlebar controls and such? Daniel
Hi Daniel! Thanks! It has an extra oil cooler to prevent over heating. It hasn’t has any extra features compared to a normal RT maybe, even less features but it costs a lot less!
You just gotta keep checking cycle trader. There is one in Birmingham AL for sale right now with 4800 miles I think he wants $6000 for it it's a 2009. Mine is a 2008 with 16,000 miles I got for $4999.00

In case any other RT-P riders see this - does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit the correct model-year cruise control system to the police bikes that didn't have it factory installed? One can find the parts here and there online - but whether it all works together is a whole nother story.
Never mind. The short answer is no - found it out from the people over on advrider. Besides the parts (there are many, including different throttle cable splitters and different clutch/brake lever housings) there would be some reprogramming necessary.
Don't forget to replace the Hall sensor, it's expensive at 300€, but if it fails you're stranded right away, no second change. no limb home mode. it's death right away. It's not the sensor itself that fails, but the cabling on that module.
@@droommotor ... and if it's an old one, you might wanna check the inside of the fuel tank as wel, there are several hoses (water drain from the filler cap, air vent) in there, some are custom made hoses and can't be replaced with anything else than original unless you have a pipe bender, pretty expensive too for their length. a dirty fuel filter will strain the fuel pump and that's more than 250€ to replace. You also might wanna clean the fuel injectors with carburetor cleaner, some video's on UA-cam on how to.
@@droommotor search for: oilhead_hall_sensors.pdf. a how to fix that sensor, more websites host this document, but some try to fool you and make you sign up, keep looking. it even seams if it's raining very hard, water can reach this (if it's "bad" state) and let you down, until it dries up.
@@droommotor Well, i toughed since yours was used professionally, it would have a hose to fill up every second or third day or so. so i think it would be very wise to change the filter and while your at it to change the other hoses inside. You also need a new seal, a large rubber ring (4€) that whole assembly, fuel pump and fuel gauge / level indicator / mounting plate is VERY expensive. some 600€ not sure if you have enough room in the tank to bend a "stainless" steel pipe in a u shape and use double hose clamps to safe on BMW's custom hose, it's very little and like 30€+ As for the HAL sensor, you need to remove the front cover of the engine, remove the pulley and inspect the state of the wires. if you a bit handy in electronics, you can build your self a device with a transistor, resistor and a LED to set the timing correct if you need to replace it, follow the schematic in the document.
I test drove a 2012 RT-P version... it has a faint burnt oil smell when doing slow maneuvers. It's not the exhaust and it doesn't show any apparent leaks. I've read it can come from a variety of small seals? Anyone who would provide some advice to point the dealer in the right direction? Wouldn't want to consider it without them fixing this small annoyance.

The best feature of the RT-P is that they have a fan fitted to the oil cooler which really helps.
Good addition! I forgot to add it to the video. Also factory crash bars!

Thanks, will look for one here in California. Alleen jammer dat er geen cruise control op zit maar de rest is A-ok especially the narrower panniers
Yeah... that is the only gripe.

I bought it with 80k km! But dont be scared of by a 100k km bike! They are built to last!

No official mods you can build it back to civilian but it costs a lot. I saw some people who modded it to put a topbox on/in it!
