Okay so since I made that comment I found a solution as well that you might like! We Are Likewise has this product called a euroadapter. It doesn't say that it fits a C30 or any volvo for that matter but if you just remove the pin and stick on the 12mm option it works flawlessly. I rally my C30 and beat on the shifter pretty hard and it is yet to pop off or come loose in any way.

It sounds like you already have a plan for it, but I would wrap small strips of duct tape around the top of the shift rod until the knob fits super snug. I've had success snugging things up with duct tape like that.
Hey man I’m getting the automatic 2008 Volvo c30 and I was wondering if I could change the gear knob to make it look nice, however there’s this button on it and the button pushes this piece in and when u remove the old knob it takes tht mechanism all the way out… would I be able to or no
