I strongly approve of how maturely handled the subject of menstruation is in this episode. 12-year-old Sofia got the support and compassion she needed during her first period. Baymax is an angel from Robot Heaven! :)
They shouldn´t have done this with pads, they should have done it with pain medication. Not a single woman or girl loves a tampon brand, so what is the massage here? If you don´t love menstruation, then there is something wrong with you?
@@elrti319 Yes, you have some good points there. At least pads and how they are preferred by some women (myself included) were mentioned by one of the customers in the episode, but there was a missed opportunity to feature pain killers to eliminate period pain.
@@elrti319 Does liking a brand of plasters mean you like being hurt? I have strong preferences for all types of menstrual product I need because the wrong ones could mean sensory distress for a week. Discovering what menstrual products are good and work for you is just as important as finding what painkillers you prefer for it. Nowhere in this clip or episode does it suggest that not loving periods is wrong. The child herself is insecure about it and gets upset because the people around her treat getting periods like turning into an adult, and she doesn't want that. Those fears aren't treated with disdain, but empathy, I don't know where you could see something else
We must thank Tadashi for that 🥺
@btamamura Exactly! Ever since I was in high school, I have been aware that menstruating for the first time does not automatically make a preteen girl a woman.

I don't think so; if he stole them, where did he get all the bags?
i love how recent films and shows aimed for younger audiences are discussing about periods. they are 100% normal and shouldn't make people uncomfortable.
I wonder a lot how much I'd suffer from dysphoria and overall shame about menstruating if I'd grown up on stuff like this instead of good old Christian "love"
yea because before that teenage girls used to drown in a sea of period right ?....no ?
@@aligmal5031 Lots of young people who menstruate feel ashamed of or panicked by periods because no one ever told them it was gonna happen, and everyone acts like it’s a taboo topic that is inappropriate to discuss. So yes, normalising it does absolutely help childrens’ health, and also to help kids who won’t menstruate to better understand and support their friends who do.
@@aligmal5031 no. But periods were (still often are) treated as something shameful that shouldn't be talked about
It's not normal for a man to have a period.... Sorry... Person number #3 is a trans dude with a trans flag/color on his shirt...
We need periods to be normalized because children go through it as well, and the same people complaining want to take that knowledge away from them by sexualizing it and making them unprepared for when it happens. I thought I was going to die when mines happened at the age of 12 and my family members were yelling at me to shut up instead of helping me out. If I’ve known from things like this it would’ve helped me big time, I applaud the trans man being here as well. What many people don’t realize is that they also have similar biological functions as a cis-women, why is it so hard for others to just show respect and appreciate a harmless thing that’ll help kids?????
Exactly, I was literally 10 when I got mine, periods are something that happens to *children,* and children should know about them. It’s already a hard enough thing to go through without society making it feel scary and shameful. And if people want to argue that young boys shouldn’t have to see stuff like this, ummm, yeah, they should know that something their moms, sisters, and friends deal with is normal and not something to be freaked out by. Keeping boys in the dark about periods is how you end up with grown men who can’t handle buying feminine care products for their girlfriends, wives, and daughters.
This!! It's such a necessary thing to teach through media, namely in the event of people not being taught elsewhere. If a child doesn't know about their body, when something really is wrong, or something happens to them, they won't have the words to say it. Kids knowing what's happening to them when they go through puberty etc is more important than the squicks of stuck up adults who think education is dangerous because knowledge is power and they think kids shouldn't have power or autonom- uhhhh I mean because they think it'll make their heads explode from all the information...or something.
Some kids even get there periods as young as 8 (which is too young but it happens) the youngest average age is 9, which is still very young but every kid should know what they will go through, and see it in kids shows so they know they're not alone.
I was 11 when my fist period happened and had to use a lot of tissue paper folded over and over again because my mother said menstrual care products were for grown up women, school counselor was the one getting us pads because dumb parents refused to buy them for us what the hell. I wish we had this kind of educational media back in the day.
But they are normalized
Who is stopping you from getting your period?
When I started bleeding from my va, I didn’t panic because it was already normalized and explained to me by both my parents when I got mine. Periods should be normalized to kids. It’s bound to happen, so don’t bother shielding it away.
the only problem is, a huge portion of the watchers are small boys, and I bet parents dont want to have to explain this to their 5 year old boy.
@@mcflexel7581 what are you on about? Boys should know about periods too. It's common knowledge and should be taught to everyone

I think everyone is missing the big question here:
How did baymax pay for all those pads and tampons?
YAH-
With improved nutrition, periods are happening younger and younger (used to be they wouldn't happen till age sixteenish, now nine isn't unusual), so this is absolutely and definitely something kids need to see. If people whine about it being sexual, point out all the times in cartoons a boy gets hit in the crotch and people laugh.
Seems like a few people here failed their health classes
can just about guarantee that the men complaining about the episode don't know where the clit is and think women pee from their vaginas. Pity. They could do with a proper education about the female body but it's evidently too scary for them.
These people probably campaigned for health class to be cancelled because it’s “grooming” for any adult to use the word “gender”.
This is just adorable af
I hate that I only know about this scene because of fragile assholes on the internet. The two main "issues" I see people complain about are either "why is this in a kid's movie" which shows a lack of understanding in who gets periods and when as well as not understanding that this is a series and not a film. The other reason is "there's a trans person" where people either don't understand that trans men are afab and thus have the organs for menstration or they are just transphobic in general but understand the terminology (not sure which of those is worse tbh). Me? I'm just happy to see Baymax be such a supportive bean to a little girl who just happened to start her period at school. I was at home my frist time and I freaked out even knowing it was going to happen but I didn't know where (if that makes any sense. Like school only says this organ will do this but like not an outside view). Anyway if I had a Baymax to say "hey this is what's going on" I wouldn't have paniced thinking I was bleeding out or something.
This scene would, nonetheless, be more appropriate for older tweens and teenagers. Otherwise, what are young children going to understand by seeing this? Kids shows should exist to be an escape from the world. Teen and adult shows should exist to make fun of the world.
Also, if Disney is going to touch on being trans, they definitely need to touch on the serious aspect of gender dysphoria. It is a mental disorder that no young, impressionable person should see as good. I know that if a show for younger people were to bring up depression or bipolar disorder, they would do so in a serious manner as to make sure the right perspective is given of it.
@@User-wh1mh you're an idiot if you think any kid watches this with the idea that there's a trans man in it. You only noticed because of your own bigotry and biases, children do not give a flying fuck about this whole debate whatsoever unless they specifically have parents who have indoctrinated them.
Also spoiler, trans people exist and you can't change that 😘
No, kids shows SHOULD normalize periods. I got my period when I was 10, when I was still watching kid shows regularly. Despite the fact that nearly half of the entire population menstruates, I still feel like I have to hide my period, by sneakily smuggling period products in public bathrooms, only changing pads when no one else was there etc. I was lucky to be taught about periods before I got mine, but the feeling that it was shameful and something to hide is something I'm struggling with to this day, so seeing a kid's show say "Look, having periods is normal, and we can talk about it!" is so amazing for young girls, who won't feel like they have to hide their periods.
And on the trans person: being trans does not equal having gender dysphoria, and many children know from the age of 5 that they are trans. No one is trying to "inspire" children to develop gender dysphoria, this scene is just trying to tell people that menstruating trans men exist, and that that's okay. You don't need to delve in thr deeps of gender dysphoria of a character who's onscreen for like 20 seconds.
Personally, as a menstruating person, this scene was absolutely heartwarming, and I love it.
@@randompikmin4103 Honestly, I wasn’t super against the period talk. That said, if a parent is hoping a kid’s show will talk to their daughter about periods rather than doing it themselves and/or watching an educational YT video, that’s flat-out irresponsible. However, I found it more of a problem how contrived the scene was to try and be as diverse as possible in 30 seconds. Baymax asked one question and about a dozen people were quick to help him (including many who weren’t in the scene to start off).
My other problem was the transgender part. To address your points, I doubt anyone would voluntarily choose to transition unless there was major distress with their current form. I’m not worried that kids are being taught to have gender dysphoria, though stuff like this could make them worry if they have it if false impressions are given. It isn’t just having a keen interest in being the opposite gender. I know this isn’t the first time trans characters have been included in kid’s shows and I know it won’t be the last time. Never yet have I seen the unfortunate reality of what many transgenders face be depicted.
@@User-wh1mh Well, your doubts are wrong. In trans communities, there is the term "gender euphoria", which a person feels when they express themselves as their preferred gender. While many people suffer from gender dysphoria, some trans people aren't dysphoric over their birth gender, but rather feel even happier when they express themselves as their preferred gender. Some people don't transition to stop feeling dysphoric, but rather transition to start feeling euphoric.
I don't think it's necessary to depict the suffering of a marginalizes group of people everytime they appear on screen. I don't expect that every time a black character is on screen, that we have a deep dive about the racism that black character feels, or that every gay character needs an arc overcoming homophobia. Sure, discrimination and suffering are part of the experience for many, but they aren't their ENTIRE experiences.
A trans person may suffer from extreme dysphoria and be depressed, but that's never all there is to them - they may also realllly like hiking, love experimental fashion and be funny, and just like everyone else, they have to buy groceries (and pads) occasionally. Why should we elevate their pain and suffering, and conceal the everyday stuff?
Edit: I also think it's ridiculous to worry about whether kids will be scared they might be trans. I mean, assuming you are cis, ask yourself this: Are you trans? Would you prefer to live your life as the opposite (or any other) gender?
If you ARE cis, for most people, this will be an easy question to answer: no, I really wouldn't, I feel comfortable the way I am. If a cis kid asks themselves that, they'll probably come to the same conclusion. And even if they are wrong - most don't commence (irreversable) medical procedures until they are either of age or have had extensibe counseling. If a young kid asks to be called by a masculine name and he/him pronouns, but discovers later she does prefer to be a girl, nothing bad has happened, she can just go back to dressing and being called the way she used to be.
omg is it just me or does the first girl sound like luz??

Like I can just see some of the nit-picking cis folks I’ve known saying some version of “but if he’s trans wouldn’t he be on T, and if he’s on T why would he have a period huh?” And I love that even a major studio these days is savvy enough to treat it as a nonissue that the answers are maybe and maybe and don’t worry about it 😂
@@WhatWouldLubitschDo saying men can have a periods is the issue here, because your broadcasting a false idea that men can have them when they never will. MEN can not have periods only women can, if these so called trans men have periods it’s because they are and forever will be a BIOLOGICAL woman
Oh, yeah, let's have a man talk about what pad he prefers...🙄
If you couldn’t tell by the trans flag on his shirt, hes transgender and is female to male. He still gets a periods, that’s kinda obvious?
the diversity in this though!! there's also a transgender in this scene 🏳️🌈, and they're talking about period open mindedly THIS FREAKIN WARMS ME
Dang, a woman openly talking about menstruating and what products she uses? How stunning and brave..this is coming from a woman btw.
*THANK YOU* intensifies
So wholesome!

@@3geneforge yeah, talking about periods can be a gross conversation but it’s an important one nonetheless :]

@@accofedits there's a dude with a trans shirt saying he likes a certain pad or tampon.... Rewatch it
THE TRANS MAN MADE ME CRY, IT WENT BY SO FAST BUT IVE LITERALLY NEVER SEEN A TRANS MAN IN A CGI FILM BEFORE LET ALONE ONE ABOUT MENSTRUATION 🤧💝
This is so sweet. I’m happy to see it
Hehe, cute :)
I’m with the trans dude. Wings is the only way.

And to think the first person to suggest which product to use first is Luz Noceda herself.
I loved this scene because it was mature, educational, on point, but still in line with the world of Big Hero Six and didn’t feel out of place😊
Also I’m a guy. Though I wouldn’t know how to talk about this without saying the wrong thing, I do support how they handled periods here 😊
I love this episode. It took me by surprised that they just got right to the heart of the matter. I didn’t try to sugarcoat it.
Honestly, I think this episode should be showing kids health classes
Wish periods were talked about more when I was younger! My school botched the whole puperty lectures and they didn't really teach us anything, especially periods outside the 'Girls get periods when they enter puperty and it's when your body starts bleeding' note. My mother didn't really tell me anything either, so when I got my first one at school no less I had no idea what was happening and hid in the bathroom for half of class trying to figure it out alone. For around three months I just used rolled up toilet paper because I didn't know what else to do, and was too scared to ask my mother till the bleeding started getting too much for just the paper.

i can't believe people reacted so negatively to this. It's sweet and handled very well. Wish i had a Baymax when i started menstruating as a kid
I wish I had a friend like baymax
Baymax: "You have been a good girl, Aunt Cass. Have a Lollipop!" (Cherry-Flavored)
Love seeing LGBTQ reparation in the form of casual nps, it’s not screaming “here’s your representation!” It’s just adding another person; not a big deal but definitely makes a big difference.
I will never understand people that consider showing and talking about mestruations as a sort of tabù. It's something incredibly natural 😅
Which episode is this?
Oh wow, that is the same voice as Clay Puppington
why is everyone so mad? its a giant marshmallow robot man who goes around and helps people selflessly when he isn't out being superheros with his best friends.
this shit rules dude
I prefer minion tampons
yes
absolutley
This isn’t the first Disney show to do this. Sydney to the Max also did it.
What is this on?
my friend told me about this scene, and i was really confused. i thought it was like a shitpost or something, lol
then they showed me, and i am so happy they did. this might just be one of my favorite TV scenes ever!❤️
I don't see anything wrong with this at all. It's a natural and inevitable part of growing up. There's nothing perverse or deviant about it. If they had to pick a figure to educate people, what better figure than Baymax?
I know and understand that some people are not comfortable discussing it, and there's no fault in that either. It's a sensitive subject for many people, and can project mental images that can be unpalatable. Nevertheless, it exists, and if you're a parent, you have to be prepared to guide your child through it. That's why that lone guy is a good dad. He seems the type of father who isn't afraid to change diapers.
I see this the same as educating your child about firearms: they'll understand it better if you take away the mystery behind it, but also teaching them to not be stupid, because any mistake they make can be life-changing, or in some cases, life-ending. With anything pertaining to sexuality, responsibility is key.
Wow, I’ve never seen a show talk about tampons and pads before
Well, a kid’s show, to be exact
I didn't even think the guy was trans. I assumed he was buying them for someone.
Right
hes literally wearing a trans flag shirt
I love the trans shirt! 🏳️⚧️
Ye me too! The trans flag is so pretty and makes a nice shirt! Also just the fact there's a trans guy of course!
Thank you Baymax 😊 I prefer menstrual underwear, they're economically worth it, they protect extremely well, they don't hurt and they're environementally friendly!
I just have one question: How did Baymax pay for all of that?
