OneDrive is fine as long as you selectively choose which folders to sync.
I usually backup some folders that have various important documents that deserve a backup (some scans and administrative stuff) but also some of my personal documents about my hobbies (drawings, markdown documents I use for blogging etc...) and some profile files for various applications.
It's free and very useful when using another PC.
But yeah the default options are awful and are a bit predatory to get a sub from you.
Even as someone who has been using OneDrive since around the time its name changed from SkyDrive, I totally understand this issue. Microsoft constantly shoving the products they ship with Windows in their users' faces is so obnoxious. OneDrive is a fine service, but people being put off or panicked by Microsoft's forcefulness is reasonable. If people want to use it, they will of their own accord. Glad knowledgeable Miofa were on hand help Mio clear those annoying notifications and relax her mind on the issue!

I was a bit worried when Mio said she had something to say, but the MioFa provided appropriate and useful advice for the situation - almost immediately. What a relief it wasn't a big incident!

Nothing like half a day digging into every notification that annoyed you recently when you find time lol.
Half the time it ends with regedit I swear lol.
I fortunately never had to deal with OneDrive, and thanks to the MioFa, I now know how to deal with it if the problem ever arises! Mama Mio and the MioFa Forest are peaceful once again!
The real story here is not that Mio uses OneDrive, but that her desktop has >15gb worth of files on it. That's cute af, I wonder if she just makes all her folders on it.

That's relatable, OneDrive can be really annoying if you don't need it. I'm glad that Mio was able to fix it live with the MioFa's help; we will never forgive OneDrive for attacking Mio's peace of mind!

Yup. One drive or cloud synced storage is useful for certain people for sure... but Not need it and no need to force it.
OneDrive can be a pain to set up, but it’s surprisingly helpful at times when you have to move around a lot/have two or more PCs, laptops etc.
It just sucks it's forced onto us. I prefer to do my backups manually. Not to mention it messes with the stored data, and you can't access it using a different OS in case of a disk failure, making recovery a complete nightmare.
Microsoft trying to make Onedrive the default in Windows 11 is still one of the worst things they've ever done.
They weren't even subtle about trying to read your data

One drive is so damn intrusive. It's on by default, it takes over all the default folders of the system, and is nearly impossible to get rid of. Not to mention it messes with the way files are stored. If something happens and you want to extract those files from your HD/SSD using a different system, it's impossible to do so. It should be illegal to force that onto the user. I lost so many things because of it when my disc had a boot failure because all my stuff was under the one drive without me even knowing.
I was so annoyed by MS shoving it's OneDrive down my throat, I removed it entirely through registry edits.
They really try to prevent you from getting rid of it. When they started adding other cloud enabled software without asking for permission was when I ditched Windows entirely.
No such issues on Linux.
If you're storing data for more than a year or two, more hard drives are cheaper than cloud storage.
On top of being more secure (because you control the hardware), more reliable (accessible offline), and more private (again, because you control the hardware).
The only reason to use cloud storage is if you have data that multiple people need to access, or you for some reason constantly need to access the data from outside your home.

Everybody shits on Microsoft products, but for me OneDrive not bad, it was preinstaled and allowed me to sync my two desktops from work and my house. And for web browser, I tend to use chrome, but since whenever I open a pdf it opens on edge, many time I forget and end up using edge, and it works just fine

There’s a lot of cloud services that offer a baseline free amount of cloud storage, I found it pretty useful that onedrive just works out of the box & the family plan pricing is pretty good in terms of $/TB (cheaper than Dropbox etc)!
Maybe the only annoying thing is it comes by default if you don’t want it, in that case it’s not too hard to disable like Mio did so the notifications stop.

The OneDrive/Microsoft hate was music to my ears~! Such a useless service they try to shove down your throat. Not only are there dozens of better back up solutions on the market, the fact that Microsoft's 1st party one is so bad is laughable lol. Very glad Mio was able to free herself from the evil clutches of OneDrive lol. The MioFa did a very good thing today.

One drive is perfectly fine and works well, the hate is absolutely justified however considering how hard they shill it and force it but as a service it's no worse than GDrive

I'm also annoyed by notifications, which is probably a reason I don't like to use my smartphone that often even though I'm obligated to carry it around, but OneDrive is about as reliable or unreliable as any other major cloud storage option. The "problem" seems to be it's integrated into the OS everyone in the world uses, so when it malfunctions, you're immediately notified by it. I'd disable Google Drive on my phone for the same reason, so I can hardly fault someone for disabling the cloud storage implementation on Windows (which I have used for years, because I actually use my PC, and not my phone, as a hub). People get understandably angry by Microsoft pushing features, though they get as angry, or more so, whenever Microsoft dares to sunset one, which is probably why the OS is still packed with ridiculous anachronistic functionality and support from 20 to 30 years ago. Damned if you do...

I just recently stopped syncing to Onedrive. well to begin with, when Samsung shut down their gallery backup two years ago they told everyone to sync to Onedrive, so..

everyone shitting on onedrive, but for me on work laptop I can just store stuff at the folder, and don't care if laptop stolen or broken accidentally, I can just take new laptop and start working immediately.... after windows updates lol
Only works if you HAVE a different machine with windows to do that. If you don't and need an immediate recovery, One Drive makes it impossible to pull back the files by using a Linux booted from a pendrive because it messes with the way the data is stored, making it only accessible on windows with One Drive installed. I wish we could at least easily opt out of it...
@@VixYW I get what you mean. Only speaking from my experience where laptop supplied all windows, no byod, and IT have spare machines ready to be used. For personal use I don't use it, rather I just use nas and cloud backup
That would likely be due to the Folder Backup feature being automatically turned on for you, possibly by your network admins. That bit, I will admit, is handy.

In my life i paid for windows ONCE and to call it bloatware is an understatement. Microsoft is lucky i like gaming, otherwise id be running something else.
Just use Syncthing, your own FLOSS private cloud sync. The max capacity of Syncthing is your device's capacity. I personally use it on my Steam Deck.
As a basic for power users, you need to get rid of Windows bloatwares after installation or go Linux.
OneDrive is fine for the people know how to use it. But it can cause many issue
I'm an university student, and i had problem cleaning and building Java Project because the project is saved in OneDrive folder and cause to extension fault. I almost failed my test because of it so i don't like it too
What do miofa think about Google's cloud service Google Drive?
Fuck that sync, it’s so fucking annoying, it will sync what on the Desktop first not what i want while most of the thing in my desktop is just for convenience. Just leave it to users and they will backup their data by themselves, remove that sync shiet
