  • Today How to shoot fireworks with ANY camera. I'm sharing 7 tips for shooting fireworks on the 4th of July and Bastille day! How to shoot fireworks with a compact camera, DSLR and phone.

    Take better fireworks pictures Here are my 7 secrets to shoot fireworks like a boss with any camera:
    ⏀1 You can use ANY camera that has manual mode. If you have a phone, download a long exposure app or use the live mode on an iphone (you can create long exposure from live photos - google it)
    ⏀2 You don't need a tripod! All you need is a stable spot to put your camera. I often put my camera on the floor or on my backpack. If you still want a tripod here are options:
    ⏀3 You have to experiment to get the right shot. Try different settings to get the results you want. Here are the ones I start with: ISO100, F/5.6, Shutter Speed 3seconds, WB auto. Take a picture and if it's too dark or too bright modify the settings to get it right.
    ⏀4 Don't shoot in JPG. Shoot in RAW or RAW+JPG. You can then leave the WB in auto and will have a ton of editing range.
    ⏀5 The longer you expose (shutter speed 3,5,10s) the more firework you will have in your picture. Too long might get too bright and too confusing!
    ⏀6 Don't shoot just the firework. At least try something new. Give a sense of place/ambiance in your image. Shoot the cityscape, the people, the background with the fireworks.
    ⏀7 Underexpose a little. This will protect the highlight of the fireworks and help you edit more easily.
    Here you go, my 7 secrets to photographing fireworks! Let me know if you're going to take pictures of the fireworks too!

    Hey Pierre, Suzi here… I know this video is from two years ago but I had to rewatch it because tonight is the first time I’m going to try and shoot fireworks. From all places, my front yard. I’ll try and get a dog in the shot since there is no interesting landscape around here. Happy Independence Day 2020!!

    Good recap of fireworks tips, Pierre, but not exactly “secret” considering how many posts have long covered, and continue to cover, this subject and all you touched on. Still, repetition reinforces. Also, very important - turn off: 1. Built-in flash/flash mode, 2. Auto-focus (use manual and pre-focus at infinity as you replied to a comment below), 3. Image stabilization, and 4. Long exposure noise reduction (in many cameras). Of secondary importance is to shoot most pics at show start if you want to minimize the accumulating smoke/haze. Some consumer oriented cameras, as you know, include a specific fireworks scene mode that may not take into account all these technical safeguards. Bonus - frame scene to anticipate and capture topmost bursts, and get creative w/zoom during exposure.

    • @Pierretlambert
      @Pierretlambert  6 років тому +1

      Hey Paul!!! GREAT add on! The 4. You mention is definitely something that can get people confused as it usually freezes the camera for a while...!

    If you just smash the shutter button, chances are that you introduce camera shake. If you use a timer, it's extremely difficult to predict when the action is going to happen, and time it precisely. One technique is to set a long shutter speed, and cover the lens with a black card. When you notice some action, remove the cardboard, then put it back a few seconds later. This way you can superimpose multiple bursts in the same shot. Removing the black card is quick enough, and it shouldn't shake the camera. So having no professional cable release is no excuse, either. Everyone can get a cheap black card from a craft shop.

    Merci Pierre bon video, but I have to shoot fireworks in a suburban area and not a city. How do you focus on sky in auto focus when you have no talk building's to focus on at night.
    Au revoir. Lee.

    • @Pierretlambert
      @Pierretlambert  6 років тому +1

      Heya Lee!! Manual on infitiy or wait for one to blow up focus on it when the light on and turn the lens in manual after it will be focused :)

    You just missed 'Canada Day' .... July 1st we were 151 years old.

  • @bubbadahut9639
    @bubbadahut9639 6 років тому +1

    All of these tips are extremely valid. Tripod = not absolutely required. (be a rock!)
    Manual mode is extremely useful. However i would suggest (if using a rock/tripod) to shoot in bulb mode with a remote trigger. (Careful with wireless triggers, other people might use them too and might interfere with yours, physical trigger might be best if its crowded) Bulb mode = you control the shutter length, so can make the shutter as long as you want or as short as you want.
    Be prepared for rain!
    BTW Canada Day is a thing too... go to Canada on July 1st for some fireworks practice before the 4th of July! (hah, next year!)
    For me I wound up using Iso 64 (D850) F8-F11 24-70mm lens between 44mm and 70mm i focused on the first firework as it went off, and left lens on that spot most of the rest of the night, some adjustment from time to time. In 20 minutes wound up with 178 photos to mess around with on bulb mode. Oh and i used Matrix metering / full scene meter, not spot.

    • @Pierretlambert
      @Pierretlambert  6 років тому +1

      Heya! Awesome thanks for sharing! Yeah remote + bulb is great. I have the tendency to think as little as possible so I leave it in preset times. Otherwise I have to watch the time or count :p
      Timelapse mode works well too!!
      Good point for Canada!!! Damn I missed it :-0
      Have a great day man!

    • @paulm8157
      @paulm8157 6 років тому

      Bubba da Hut Good point about bulb mode and potential interference w/same. Some folks opt to keep bulb mode active and place/remove black cardboard in front of, but not touching the lens.
