I bought a 78 back in 82. It was the first car i ever bought. Is white, red cloth,60/40 seat, with 400 4bbl and ttops. I still have it, driving on highway at 75 mph, it gets 21mpg! Still my favorite car.
Nice!! Do u still have it (12yrs since comment) I never knew the headlight covers opened and I didnt know how completely transparent they were when new.
BTW, I was an Employee of Chrysler Corp. in the Sales Department from 1977 until 1980 working in Natick Massachusetts at the Zone Office. I also have the ability to say that I actually drove one of our 78 Dodge Charger SE company cars and while it was in my care, ( a guy hijacked he car from me) It was stolen from me during a Jewelry Robbery at the Natick mall on Route 9. The car ended up in a high speed chase by the Natick Police recovered the undamaged in about 15 minutes.
My dad bought a '78 Magnum XE sometime around 1979-1980 with around 20 K on the clock. It was a Chrysler executive car, whatever the heck that was. The car was black on black and absolutely stunning being almost brand new. I got my driver's license shortly after Dad bought his Magnum, and it was always a treat when he let me drive it. He just about had a coronary the time I backed it out of our garage and damaged the car's side moulding by getting the back end too close to the side of the garage. One time we were at the grocery store drive up getting our groceries loaded when the Magnum stalled and wouldn't start again. Dad put up the hood to have a look at the engine, and about 30 seconds later a huge gust of wind came up and slammed the hood against the front windshield and shattered it into a million pieces! I'll never forget the look on Dad's face when the wind blew the hood of his beloved Dodge Magnum against the front windshield. Fortunately, the damage was covered by insurance as an Act of God. Thanks for posting this--it brought back a lot of memories of my old man and his Magnum.
My recollection is that the Second Arab Oil Embargo (1979) hammered the sales of this car. My younger brother had a gorgeous red and white Magnum for fifteen years and I was always taken by the styling of these fine-looking coupes.
I had one of these. bought it in 1995 when I was 19 yo. It was basically my first car as I'd always driven my dad's old 85 dodge pickup to that point. It had a great sound, and was pretty much mint with 78,000 original miles. Paid $1000 for it.
Nice to see the original ad. Always wanted to own one when I was younger. Got one now. You rarely see one around, so they're kind of rare. Mines in great shape, completely redone in eggshell white. Only need the rear bumper needs rechromed. Transplanted 340 V8 with 300 HP helps. Parts are hard to come by and the monster barely fits in the garage. Hope to see more of them around. Maybe one day it might be a collector car.
@Maichotho They didn't sell to well, so I don't think that many people thought they were cool....but I have to tell yah, I worked for a Chrysler owned Dealer at the time. All our salesmen and the zone office too drove them and they ordered them loaded with the performance packages and all the nice options. Even really nice wheels. I use to love when they were being delivered. I use to love the glove soft leather seats. They were AWESOME Cars and I thought really cool.
I am familiar with Allpar and actually have found numerous writings and articles incorrect. I worked for Chrysler, I was there at the time. The Charger was sold in 1978 as was the Magnum, one didn't replace the other, they were both sold at the same time, that's all I'm saying. Magnum was only sold two years 78 & 79. Then replaced in 80 with the Mirada. The Charger sold from 66 to 78 before being discontinued. It's a myth that the Magnum replaced the Charger.
The Magnums were built in Windsor Ontario my grandfather worked at Chryslers if you look on the door of a Magnum it will say built in Canada on the tag
The MIRADA was an awesome car as well, too bad they didn't really have any commercials for it!! I remember as a young teen going to Transcona Dodge in Winnipeg while my Dad got an Oil, Lube, Filter on his 1973 Chrysler Newport Custom, and sitting in a NEW 1983 Dodge Mirada CMX, it was LOADED!!
It's amazing how the 1978 Magnum is almost identical to the Charger SE/Cordoba when viewed from the side. The Magnum's sloping nose, Cord-inspired horizontal grill, and headlamp covers completely transforms the car, making it look much wider than its stablemates when viewed from the front.
Those headlights were genius!! Way ahead of their time... look what we have today with transparent aero lenses over the lights. The Search-Tune digital radio at 2:19 . . . I have this in my Dodge, and made a video of the operation! Apparently this was a very expensive option when introduced in 1977.
Lake Nipissing makes me wonder what if American cars at the time had glass composite ECE headlights instead of outdated sealed beams. Imagine the different look many American cars could have had which you can see with the clear "covers" they used here.
Glad you like them. I have some Buick Promotional film uploads to do very soon...hope you like them and the music too, from 1973, in the next week or two.
The Charger was being made in 1978, the Magnun was sold in tandum. The Charger wasn't a Cordoba clone, frankly, it was the other way around. The Charger and Plymouth Satilite Sebring were based on the B Body platform. Chrysler had no B Body intermediate pre 75. For 75 with the restyling of the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Sebring, at the last minute, they killed the Sebring name for Plymouth and turned the car into a Chrysler and named it Cordoba.

Oh wow, I remember an acquaintance of mine had this exact vehicle in black! Around 1982 it was and the one thing that stuck in my mind was that it had that O/D transmission. Back then it was no doubt THE only vehicle that had that feature and of course it became ubiquitous in the 80s as pretty much every vehicle had overdrive.
@@klwthe3rd okay, right I got you. Yes, just a regular TF 727 with torque converter lockup. My mis-speak. So, I know electric torque converter lockup was nothing new, but it was different anyway as I don't think any other vehicle - or other THAN Chrysler anyway - could be had with that feature.
"in Tandem" means, together, they were both 1978 models built on the same assembly line at the same time with the Cordoba as well. All three were built "in tandem". I worked for a Dodge Dealer in 77 thru 80, we sold Chargers in 1978, but no where near as many as Magnums.
I could of bought a 78 Magnum 10 years ago for 800 bucks it had the 360 in it the guy had it since brand new I wish I would of bought it it was black with tan vinyl interior

I use to work for a dealer at the time. Those headlight covers always failed. On the St Regis too. I have a St Regis and love the look of the covers so I get out and open and close them manually....lol Did you have the Magnum XE? I always loved the brushed aluminum dashboards
Great video. Future owner of a 1978 Magnum in metallic brown, with the half vinyl top, window louvers, 400 V8 (to be replaced with a motorhome 400 or 440 due to being off the road since 1994) and police brakes/suspension...
My idea of a commercial, since this was a badass ride: Play death metal music while it rolls down a dark alleyway, as the announcer goes over the features.
+jason75 Original in the sense that it's film that's been used to create an electronic file, it's not a TV broadcast that was then copied on a VHS tape and then converted to DVD and then uploaded. So it's a clear picture but also red due to fading of the original film.
I’ve heard the second song at 2:02 before, been listening to a lot of KPM production music on iTunes for the past few years, but I’m having trouble finding it now. Fits perfectly for such a good looking automobile!
@@bennybenny3749 I don’t know how I missed your comment. I absolutely love Keith Mansfield’s work, but he has so much out there to sift through. Thank you so much!
lol I don't know how you know it was being phased out? Phrase definition says "one before the other"
Go ahead, continue an urban myth. Everything on the web is 100 percent correct. Because the car replaced the Charger in NASCAR doesn't mean it replaced the car in the showroom. And frankly the styling wasn't sharper, it was smoother for better aerodynamics. The fact that the Magnum's sales of 50 grand units were 10 to 1 compared to the Charger did accelerate the Charger's exit, but they were both scheduled to leave after 1979 to be replaced by the Mirada.
@bajabusta The 79 Dodge St Regis full sized sedan also had them. Since they were used as police cars, they had to be folded down into the down position all the time because of the wig wag flashing head lights, you couldn't have the covers going up and down and up and down...it would have worn out and also looked very funny chasing the bad guys!!!!
@OsbornTramain the point being? How does this relate to you calling the Magnum a Monaco? plateforms are shared in most co companies to save costs? Is a Buick Park Ave the same as a Caddy Fleetwood? Would you call an Olds 98 a Fleetwood?
I'd love to find the stock disco music used in this! (No small task, I know) [My Grandpa had one of these as well. I stood to inherit it when I was 15, but my Dad sold it instead. :/ ]
@OsbornTramain Yes by the late 70's except for some badges and trim all the GM cars were just clones of each other. If you look at all of the cars, all the hard points are the same, you can take a Fury front clip and put it on a Cordoba and it fits. Didn't mean to dump on these cars though, we were a Chrysler family growing up and I used to have a 79 LeBaron Town&Country wagon until last October. I would love to be able to find one these now. Oh and thanks for posting these, they are great.
@ingledude didn't share any body sheetmetal with the Monaco. It's based off the Chrysler Cordoba. It only shaired Glass, roof and doors and trunk lid and hood with the Cordoba. Nothing with the Monaco or Fury or Coronet. It does have the same B body chassis.
@ingledude @OsbornTramain the point being? How does this relate to you calling the Magnum a Monaco? platforms are shared in most co companies to save costs? Is a Buick Park Ave the same as a Caddy Fleetwood? Would you call an Olds 98 a Fleetwood?
@OsbornTramain The Satellite/Fury, Coronet/Monaco, 1975 Charger/Magnum and the Cordoba all sat on the corporate 115 inch mid-size platform, the "B" body. Of course Chrysler was running out of money at this point. New Yorker/Newport/Royal Monaco/Gran Fury shared the full-size platform and of course the Volare/LeBaron/Aspen/Diplomat all shared the same platforms.
I just LOVE this commercial! Anyway...I sent you some pics about how to take that back seat out...also, I shot a video and sent it to you....I also posted the video here on you tube....its in my videos...
I worked for a Dodge Dealer during this time period, remember the Mirada very well. But I don't recall ever seeing a film on one of them. I think by 1980, they were on video rather than film and I simply don't recall seeing it at our dealer. I'm sure there must be some video or film of the Imperial, but i don't have it. I will be uploading in the next couple of weeks, a 1963 Imperial Promotional Film. It's out now being restored. It's a great film....and I;m praying the color restores nicely. I'm now doing color enhancements of all future uploads.
ah ok that's cool, I just remember my mom having one back years ago and finding anything on them is near to impossible to do, its a shame because I remember it being a pretty nice car for the time. OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain no kidding, a two door and four door aren't interchangable? The Monaco and the Magnum are on the same plateform, B bodies. But yes, they are different cars....my point was that someone here called it a Monaco and it's not anything like a 2 door monaco and it's not based off the Cordoba, the Cordoba and Magnum were both B bodies replacing the 74 Charger.....they were developed at the same time. you can't say one is based off the other. Chrysler didn't have b body until 75.
At the time, I didn't like the styling of this Magnum. I thought that the car was so ugly, I couldn't imagine anyone driving such a car. Today, I like it. I might drive it if I knew someone who had one.
I wonder why they used the Magnum name on Charger based Wagons in the mid-00s? Surely Dodge has a name that's more tied to wagons that they could have used. Granted, Magnum is a badass model name.
The 78 Magnum was an alternative to the 78 Charger SE, Dodge had two Personal Luxury Cars to sell for 1978, the Charger SE and the Magnum XE. Cordoba evolved in 78 with much new Sheetmetal and the Magnum was new sharing some parts of the new Sheetmetal with the Cordoba where the Charger of 78 retained it's basic overall design with the 77 Charger but had a lot of upgrades and changes to trim and the interior appointments and colors.
Yes, I think thats the car!! hope its running well for you. I worked for a Dodge Dealer and drove dozens of these when they were new. It's a great car!
OsbornTramain HEY THERE!! its in transit. Should be here tomorrow. It was a RED Magnum GT with white stripes? American Racing Wheels? Bidding stopped at $1900? He wanted $2400 and I bought it. looked like the clear coat was coming off? Red interior? Thats funny that you saw it. Im surprised it didnt go for more. Looks like it has the E58 360...which means there were like 584 (?) made with that engine code!! Very funny that you saw it! You NEVER see them for sale! I was interested just because it looked pretty straight. NOW I am doing research on the GT! 1672 were made! OH..and it has the original Citizen Band (CB) option!! COOL, right?
how about it means both. Together.........on the same assembly line.......Back to Back .....on the same assembly line...the Cordoba, The Charger and the Magnum. (which didn't replace the Charger, the whole purpose of this string) Maybe you don't like my grammar but at least my car facts are correct, the Magnum didn't replace the Charger.
Are you familar with "allpar"? And what was a 'urban myth'? And I think he meant sharper as in better looking not in the shape of the sheet metal.. And I've owned all of them a 75 charger,78 magnum and cordoba.

There were some built with a manual transmission too.I have seen one this way and it was factory with a 4 speed manual transmission
They were never offered with a manual
@@joejones5653 Yes they were,the 2 door versions
@@Toolaholic7 They were only offered in a 2-door in 1978 and 1979 and none were ever made with a manual.
Yes they were offered with a manual,A guy in Twin Lake,MI has a 2 door Diplomat this way
@@Toolaholic7 But this video is about the 1978 Dodge Magnum XE.. I never saw one Diplomat in this video.
would that be "rich Corinthian leather" by any chance? LOL!!!!
No, you only got that in a Chrysler Córdoba!
Somehow, I have been overcome by "groovyness" from watching this video.
I'd love to find the stock disco music used in this! (No small task, I know)
[My Grandpa had one of these as well. I stood to inherit it when I was 15, but my Dad sold it instead. :/ ]
my first car was this car! sam color blue an all! man i miss that car.
World class !!!!
My now husband of 37 yrs had a dodge magnum when were dating. Huge room back seat!!😂…it was so fast I got 4 speeding tickets
No 8 Track radio Avaaible?
@OsbornTramain Yes by the late 70's except for some badges and trim all the GM cars were just clones of each other. If you look at all of the cars, all the hard points are the same, you can take a Fury front clip and put it on a Cordoba and it fits. Didn't mean to dump on these cars though, we were a Chrysler family growing up and I used to have a 79 LeBaron Town&Country wagon until last October. I would love to be able to find one these now. Oh and thanks for posting these, they are great.
We've spoke before several years ago. Liked your purchase video of the St Regis!
Its so funny to see all theses amazing features they're advertising are the most basic things these days.
Well, I guess 40 years ago, it's funny to see what people were saying about cars from the 1930s and 1940s tho
Cars did cost 50 thousand then that car was about 5 or 6 thousand
my brother had a 78 magnum also one of my freinds had a 78 too
both were 360 2 bbl, leather, floor shifters
@ingledude didn't share any body sheetmetal with the Monaco. It's based off the Chrysler Cordoba. It only shaired Glass, roof and doors and trunk lid and hood with the Cordoba. Nothing with the Monaco or Fury or Coronet. It does have the same B body chassis.
after watching this a few times, I can tell, it's true, this car was designed for "the Action People". :O)
I wonder where they filmed the commercial? It looks an awful lot like Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) around the Big Sur area.
@ingledude @OsbornTramain the point being? How does this relate to you calling the Magnum a Monaco? platforms are shared in most co companies to save costs? Is a Buick Park Ave the same as a Caddy Fleetwood? Would you call an Olds 98 a Fleetwood?
i love how the tape gets all screwed up when it says, "something special from dodge"
PS: I used to work at the old Mack Stamping plant too!
RADIO/CB how awesome!!!!!!!
Pure gold.
WooW..What a beauty...never sold in Sweden..
I had a 78. I miss her
I just LOVE this commercial! Anyway...I sent you some pics about how to take that back seat out...also, I shot a video and sent it to you....I also posted the video here on you tube....its in my videos...
I have a good friend that has one in mint condition here in 🇵🇷. It's a two tone (gray and black)
That's a beautiful 2 tone paint color combination. The optional two tones are my favorite.
I know this message was five years ago, but in which municipality?
I'm sold. When can I buy
Mom had one for her first car. Red with white Vinyl top. Wish she kept it
Any chance of finding any films on the mirada from the early 80's? even the imperial of the time OsbornTramain
Wow never knew at a t-top version
@OsbornTramain no kidding, a two door and four door aren't interchangable? The Monaco and the Magnum are on the same plateform, B bodies. But yes, they are different cars....my point was that someone here called it a Monaco and it's not anything like a 2 door monaco and it's not based off the Cordoba, the Cordoba and Magnum were both B bodies replacing the 74 Charger.....they were developed at the same time. you can't say one is based off the other. Chrysler didn't have b body until 75.
im liking this car big luxury guys car there ! too much smoothed pimped out style !!!!
A magic means of transportation. LOL
Ok, so how fast can they go in the quarter?
The 400 could do it in the 15s
At the time, I didn't like the styling of this Magnum. I thought that the car was so ugly, I couldn't imagine anyone driving such a car. Today, I like it. I might drive it if I knew someone who had one.
that house in the middle of nowhere
I wonder why they used the Magnum name on Charger based Wagons in the mid-00s? Surely Dodge has a name that's more tied to wagons that they could have used. Granted, Magnum is a badass model name.
The Magnum was basically an upgraded Charger, as was the Cordoba!
I want one so bad!
There was a nice one on Ebay for Sale last week...was only 2000 bucks too....from down south.
OsbornTramain
was it a RED GT? In Tennesee? I BOUGHT it!!!
Yes, I think thats the car!! hope its running well for you. I worked for a Dodge Dealer and drove dozens of these when they were new. It's a great car!
OsbornTramain
HEY THERE!! its in transit. COOL, right?
sounds like you got a great deal!!!!!
how about it means both.
Hum~ it was opened HeadLamps Covers?
+Tomoyuki Watanabe 渡辺 朋幸 partⅡ yes and the Dodge St Regis too, when you turned the lamps on, the covers retracted into the body.
+OsbornTramain
Uh~m I see, I understand. Thank You very much D:)
Unless you lived in the north when the snow and ice prevented them from closing or opening all the way.
Are you familar with "allpar"? And what was a 'urban myth'? And I think he meant sharper as in better looking not in the shape of the sheet metal.. And I've owned all of them a 75 charger,78 magnum and cordoba.
