Teach this before you teach heeling!

This simple trick will help you get your dog in the heel position easily!
By using a food lure, at your dog's nose, you step back with your left leg. Lure the dog behind you and then forward next to your left leg. Feel free to feed here if you have a jumper, as this teaches the dog to get near your leg. The final step is to lift the treat such that your dog sits, then reward!
Many of us find walking a dog challenging as adolescence is often a time of pushy behavior from our teenage pups. Repeating this step teaches your puppy that being in this position is highly rewardable! Teach this skill first to make your leash walking training easier!
If you reward this skill often, your dog will likely stay in the sit when people and dogs walk past you, as it can quickly become a habit if practiced daily.
