    All this (work, stop, record to clarify, work, stop, record to clarify etc) AND you're running a shop!? I hope your viewers realize what it takes to do what you do for them! If I said something like this before (I can't keep track of my posts)... it needed to be said again anyways! Thumbs up (as with all your other videos... I'm slowly making my way through them)!

    I ended up using an Allan key to hold the belt tensioner, works fine too!

    Awesome job on the video. I have the exact same problem, my oil filter cooler is leaking a oil all over. I have the confidence to do it based on your video. You just save me a whole bunch of money. Wish me luck!!

    What a great video! I agree with Thomas. Looking at the repair, it looks like it's beyond what I would be able to do in a timely fashion. I wonder, after making internal combustion engines for 170 years, why the materials engineers haven't come up with gaskets that don't degrade and need this kind of replacement. Maybe they don't want to: a lot of money is paid by us schmuks having the shop replace faulty materials. I'm glad I don't own a GL450. I'm just starting the repair on my ML500, it's soooo much easier..

      Jim Busse you're probably right they don't want to make the gaskets better so they can fix them. Thank you for watching !

    When dealing with belt tensioner, there's a whole where you insert a pin that locks it in place so that you don't have to continue holding it when undoing the bolt that it overlaps.

    Great vid. I have the same job to to on a 2005 SLK350, but have to swap out the housing as the older version has a pressure relief valve that blows and leaks oil. You can recognise the older type by a black nylon strip near to the bottom of the housing. If that’s leaking then you need to replace the whole unit, not just the seals.

    Thanks for sharing. It would save a lot of money. Did you drain the engine oil and coolant away before you started this job? Do you think there’s a flood of liquids after I remove something if I don’t drain those liquids away??

    Great resource, thanks for taking the time to put this together. What is typical mileage for needing to replace this seal? So far my only leak is at the cam plug which I'm doing this weekend.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому +1

      David Estes I've been seeing them leak around 80,000. Cam plugs aren't too bad to do. I have a video on it .

      Fingers crossed I don't have to do it for a while! Looks to be right on the edge of what I'm comfortable with. Cam plugs look real easy, and doing oil separator valve just for fun while there!
      Thanks again!

    • @00700556
      @00700556 3 роки тому +2

      Its easier to just take the entire assembly off than just actually taking the oil cooler housing off alone

    • @RothBeyondTheGrave
      @RothBeyondTheGrave 3 роки тому

      Various is 100% right. Also, I did only my oil cooler seal last oil change (as it was all that was leaking). This coming oil change, you guessed it, filter housing just started to leak. However, if only doing oil cooler seal, you don't have to touch the thermostat, idlers, or tensioner but it def sucks working around the ps reservoir.

    I am currently on the side of the road my car is spilling oil everywhere in that general area E550 2011 I'm wondering if there's oil lines it's hard to tell right now because there is oil all over the front of the motor

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  2 роки тому +1

      I would recommend towing it to a safe spot. Then I would make sure it has oil and do the best you can to clean it off and start the engine and see if you can determine where the leak is coming from.

      @@HowtoAutomotive it appears that the dealer didn't tighten the oil filter plastic housing, I'm thinking of replacing it, it might be dried and loosing up! Lost all of the oil, just added Castrol European full synthetic 5w 40 , started it back up after tightening plastic housing. It doesn't appear to be leaking.
      It's in my driveway and I degreased engine bay. Going to keep a close eye on it!

    Hi! Great video! Look, I am going to replace just the gasket on the oil cooler, do you think it can be done without removing the steering oil reservoir and everything else you've shown here? I will try moving the thick cooling hose down so that it is out of the way, but not sure if I'll have enough space to unscrew the front lower bolt on the cooler... All other bolts look well accessible.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  7 років тому

      Денис Жуйков if you're just replacing the cooler gasket I believe you can do this job without taking most of the stuff off and I would definitely give it a shot trying to take off his little as possible. Thank you for watching!

      I just got all the parts that were attached to the link to Reseal the Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooler on my 2007 Mercedes E350. Are the steps that i have to follow pretty much the same?
