I appreciate so much that you always wear a respirator when it's appropriate and even took the time to set up your camera for that one second shot of you opening the window for better ventilation. It drives me up the wall to constantly see makers and even professional tradespeople never wearing PPE because they have to have their face out on UA-cam 100% of the time, like we don't already know what they look like. Please wear eye protection next time when you're using those tile cutters, though! Gotta keep those eyes safe too ❤
Edited to add: ok I just got to the part where you recommended eye protection, thank you, and I'm glad your face was ok!!! 😂

Yess I sometimes bend the safety rules but I really try to model the best practices when being filmed. I don't do it 100% 😅 but I will keep trying to be better. Thanks for the encouragement!

Remember a few years ago, when a bunch of places (maybe just in the US) opened where you could smash a bunch of things in a controlled environment? I think a pottery studio could 100% diversify by adding a smash studio into their space, and then a mosaic class after a night of smashing.

You can also vary the size of the pieces- so the vase has one size of pieces, the background has smaller size pieces which makes the vase pop. The yellow looks like abstract flowers.

It came out great, though not as dark grout as I expected. Another project could be a garden table top design maybe. Use the yellows and reds for flowers maybe.

I wasn't sure if the curved ceramic pieces would work but it's actually kind of lovely how it catches the light differently

I’ve made flower pots in past and the problem with flat tiles was that they looked kinda sharp so how about making something bendy with the curvy pieces? Maybe some hand made terracotta piece & instead of glazing it topping it with mosaic?

Very cool project. It turned out well! Every potter has the need to find things to do with the unsellable items. We can only put so many things in our gardens!

You can sell packages of broken pottery so others can make their own mosaic

A tip: use thick sections of old newspaper when breaking up glazed pieces. Otherwise you will get glassy splinters lodged in your hand towels. Those splinters can remain in the fibers long after machine washing or even transfer to other washed items. We potters need to take care of our hands, and not get them sliced open when wiping them on a towel! Sadder but wiser for me.

Been thinking of mosaics with those extra ceramic pots for some time. I like that you jump into projects nonchalantly. I get overwhelmed just by the planning and all those troubles I might find to which I have no answer and I end up procrastinating eternally. Imagine doing this in the scale of Gaudí's work. 🙀

I really thought you were going to make another big piece for your studio, like your sign.
The blues & browns lend themselves to being a beach scene. Imagine making wave lines with tiles instead of drawing them 🌊

I thought of a video request for you! Could you make a video about sculpting with clay and adding sculpted 3d elements to the pottery? From something like relief or bas-relief to a full 3d objects like flowers or the frog you made on your garden tea set. There aren't any educational videos as far as I can find on this topic but i feel like there are so much important technical details in both sculpting and attaching that for a complete beginner potter like me seem very intimidating haha. Would be so awesome to learn🥰

This is beautiful,❤🌺You can make a tray for your tea cups, or a small round table top for your break time in your shop. Small round pieces for walls, eye catcher. 🧿

GIRL YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIIDEO. Another thing about being married to a potter is that you get in big trouble when you break things that weren’t even seconds!!! I can’t believe you were only thinking of making one piece!!! Hahaha. I have soo many ideas!! I’d love to see the table the vase is sitting on be a mosaic table. Lol

Heeey, fellow Potter here! You can also use chards as grog, I know it’s tricky to smash them to the almost powder form, and it’s needed a specific machine, but it is very helpful to reduce waste and create very different clay to work :)

For irregular mosaic inspo, look up the nyc subway stations. They've got gorgeous mosaics in the older stations and some of the newer stations have whimsical new pieces like the 1/9 on 28th st has mosaic hats at different heights representing different famous NYC residents. As for what other things to make, how about a table top or a tray?

Scaling down (or up) is fairly easy if you draw a grid on your original design. Draw a smaller (or larger) second grid in the desired size on something else and copy the original to size. If that makes any sense 🤔
