  • Starting in 2014, I have photographed a pair of Eastern Screech owls and their young in the front yard of a home close to where I live in Cocoa Florida. In 2016 after the pair fledged 3 Owlets, the tree in which the cavity resided was blown down during a hurricane. Hoping they would return, the property owner and I built them a new home. We used some circular plywood, a 4x4 and dead hollowed-out palm tree that once had a cavity burrow in it. This male Screech Owl is calling (whinny and trill) back and forth with the female who is occupying the cavity entrance. This is a typical occurrence every evening Just prior to dusk. Usually, the male is hidden in a more dense area, but this evening he was in plain sight, providing a great opportunity to capture this behavior. The pair would go on to fledge three young Screech owls just like they have each year since 2014. Photos of these Screech Owls. wklein.smugmug... Check out this video if you want to see more of these owls. • Eastern Screech Owls

I have these Screech Owls in my backyard in an old dead cherry tree. Their trilling is very pleasant to hear every night.

Thanks for this. I hear these owls every night, especially when the dogs need to go outside in the middle of the night. I have seen Screech Owls all around my house, but I didn't know this was one of the sounds they make until now. I'm glad it isn't something that can carry one of my dogs off.

They sound like tree frogs, also, little lambs. Finally learned these sounds were a screech owl. I hear them often in the summer months. My mother still likes to argue “it’s not it’s something else” like okay, I won’t argue with you. I love how little they are. They’re like mini owls. SO CUTE!!!!!!!

They have a very unique call, so once you know what to listen for it is surprising how often you will hear them. They are very cute! Thanks!!

@@wklein24 You’re welcome. 🦉 They’re amazing! I am and have always been a huge animal lover, owls included. But over the last couple of years I’ve become a birder and my love/respect/fascination with owls has grown tremendously. And the wee screech owls, loooooove their call. Sounds like something you’d hear in a rain forest yet I live in the suburbs of Boston MA. They’re so mystical, and so wonderful. And our jobs as humans to help protect them and their habitat. So yeah thanks again for sharing 🙏🏼💙

I ADORE this sound. We have some screech owls, barred owls, and recently a great horned owl. Owls and crickets, and even spring peepers, are the sounds of Heaven!

I have heard this owl close to my house for several years. Found his roost today. A hole high up in a locust tree. So cool.

wklein24 yes they are. I may have seen one fly over the road, but there is a chance that it was a Northern Saw-Whet.

I've heard all three outside my house, but screech owls are the only ones I've actually seen.
