    Here is a funny thing. When I got out of engineering college in the late 1970s I got a job at dbx working for David Blackmer. I was tasked with testing and reworking some of the compressors that were used in pro studios. The funny thing is the qualities that made these compressors famous (years later) were the qualities Dave was trying to fix. So, you never know what the future holds for Warm Audio. Keep an open mind.

    If you don't want to pay for the SSL name, just get the Audioscape G Series Bus Compressor. Hand made in USA, Costs $600 and it truly does hold up just as well as the SSL, you won't notice a difference.

    Warm really glues and adds color in a pleasing way. I like how it brings out the reverb tails of the vocals too. SSL was very transparent. Adds some pleasant hi end. I think the Warm sounds more 3D and colored. SSL sounds very natural.

    • @michaelrice6620
      @michaelrice6620 Рік тому +1

      I love when people say that because at the end of the day thats what we do right? We have golden ears cause if you cant hear the difference between lets say slowing down the release on a compressor or speeding up the attack then you are really hindering your skills. Or even hearing eq moves you need to make, or hearing the subtle difference between at -1 or -2db cut. We make small adjustments all the time to make the overall track sound better. If you cant hear small difference and nuances then mixing and mastering music probably isnt the best thing to get into.

    • @ColSandersFORPRESIDENT
      @ColSandersFORPRESIDENT Рік тому +1

      @@michaelrice6620 There are so many videos of blind comparisons and the posters are almost always wrong AND if they get it, it usually is a lucky guess. There are tests that mute the device as the engineer twists knobs and posters say all kinds of things when the device is %100 bypassed. I have seen it all. Watch some comparisons of guitar pickups where the guy changes pickups and the sound changed dramatically BUT he really changed cabinets and showed nothing. In the end, after changing mics, cabinets and amplifiers (without showing us) he changed ONLY the pickups, and WOW. No real change in tone. Great video. Some fun with people.

    The SSL sounds amazing, the WARM sounds fantastic. BUT!!! the SSL is nearly four times the price! Plus you'll need to have a 500 series rack unit for the SSL! This is a hard one for me! if you are a pro mastering engineer the SSL is where you want to be, it's fully amazing. HOWEVER if you are semi-pro or just starting up with mastering having the WARM will definitely make life easier and be softer on the wallet.

    The engage transformers button on the WA stereo bus comp really works well for intimate acoustic tracks like this. However, I'm convinced that the SSL handles the transients better. It was really noticeable on the attack of that guitar. The knobs on the SSL aren't stepped, right?

    • @nambams
      @nambams 2 роки тому +1

      The ratio, attack, and release are stepped. Only the threshold and make up gain are continuously variable.

    I hold out hope each time a new Warm piece comes out and i’ve yet to be blown away. The Warm seems a better instrument group compressor than 2 buss. The SSL brings mix elements closer to the ear effortlessly. The Warm just colored the sound. From a price standpoint its apples to oranges, but as in most cases you get what you pay for. Great comparison..

    • @ColSandersFORPRESIDENT
      @ColSandersFORPRESIDENT Рік тому +1

      I have some WA stuff. I really did not "get it" until I used it in mixes. Soloing any device is useless (unless you ONLY record a solo'ed track). It is in the mix that any device either is great, good or crap. You have to use it in your studio. UA-cam videos don't do justice to many devices.

    • @theskeenz
      @theskeenz Рік тому

      I had an issue plagued WA76. Was never blown away by it. As far as what you can hear in a UA-cam video, there are clear differences in the two units that are readily apparent. The compressor overshoots in the WA comp doesn’t suit heavy transient laden material. The warm does a have a widening effect that the SSL does not. For these reasons i’d rather relegate the WA comp to instrument groups that are hard panned. It should make a solid guitar or synth comp. For 2bus duties there are probably better choices in the price range. Could you use this on a mix, sure. But offerings by TK Audio, Audioscape, Stam, Heritage Audio can be had used for as much or slightly more as the WA and would give better performance.

    The SSL really does just present another level of quality above any hardware or software copies… the famous “snap” sure, but also 3 dimensional audio quality, no loss in body, everything is “glued” but somehow everything still feels “defined” rather than “melted together” like the Warm Audio does here... the signals get muddy. Could be charming if you’re looking for that.
    I hate to say it but credit where credit is due… SSL still owns that sound. Sounds incredible. Sounds like a record.
    Just my opinion regarding this specific tool.

      yeah, the warm is pretty trashy with the transformers in. works well on the punk song, but other than that, meh. i really like my chameleon labs 7721, which is about the same price and rather slept on, imo. i bet the x-logic does sound a hair better on many mixes, but then again, it has far fewer features: no 1.5:1 ratio, no sc hpf, no mix knob, no hard/soft knee switch, no peak/rms detector switch. for these reasons i may never own an ssl g comp. 7721 focuses the midrange in a way that i like. for my tube+transformer comp, i did spend a lot more on the IGS Tubecore 3U. but again, considering the features and options, it's also a bargain. what comps are catching your eye?

    SSL wins every time attitude, character and natural sounding! Remains with clarity even when the mixes get really busy as a pose to the warm audio. The Warm is audio is a good for its price, we all want to believe somewhere in our thoughts that something a lot cheaper is better and can compare. In most cases the SSL Bus compressor wins in facts. But maybe not in preference for some people. I think the Alan smart C2 gives the SSL a good challenge and that's hardly surprising as he was engineer at SSL for many years.

But if you compare the townhouse bus compressor by brainworxs with the warm audio, the townhouse plugin sounds a tick better. Don't be biased by the tactile feeling of an analog unit with it's knobs. The townhouse blew me away from the first second I heard it. Give it a try if you want to save 750 Euro and above.

      Townhouse is OK, but as with plugins-- it's the surgical manner that they do things that has an audibly displeasing effect.
      The pumping action of an analog unit has a musical quality that plug-ins can't achieve, imo.
      Plug-ins have come far though!

      @@NikolausBrocke well, if you mean through an expensive preamp, Usually with some dynamics leveling involved on the way in...avalon 737sp is incredibly popular.
      So, I would say that you're right, but only partially.
      Yes, most digital mixing is done in the box... but as far as dynamics processing goes? Plug-ins are used much less than outboard gear in any professional setting I've worked in when it comes to dynamics.
      I'm not saying anything negative about plug-ins, this has just been my professional experience and the studios I've worked in.

    Bummer. Preferred the SSL on every example, even with the limited controls. Way more cohesion and transient punch. Warm doesn't sound like it was doing a whole lot except make the mix muddy. I saw that you didn't have the hpf engaged though but I wasn't hearing much snap/punch like when the SSL was engaged. I thought the Warm sounded okay on the punk mix. Same thing like their other compressors, just not quite there imo.

    There's a tiny increase in the overall sound compared to the warm audio... money wise you would think it's not worth spending 3 times more for a little bit of a better sound... but that little bit is the diffrence of what makes a really good track.... the money is worth it for the SSL, but you're not getting something rubbish with the warm audio... if I get the wrm audio, the idea would be to up grade at some point... and then the warm audio would find welcome home on a bus... for matiral to huge other parts meant to stand out

    Well, I'm not sure exactly what everyone else is hearing here, but through my headphones the WA has a depth of richness that the DBX is just missing. I'm very well aware of the extensive measures that WA has went to, to create something extraordinary, and this is clearly revealing that to me here.

    To me the SSL is not only the better choice but unless you plan on buying 5 of these (you might for your busses or stems) but if you needed just 1 it’s also the better bargain. Buying the Warm Audio only to plan to replace it and eventually get the SSL is just wasting time and money and the hassle of selling the WA (unless you’ll use it for something else). How much extra time will it really take most people to get the SSL vs just getting the WA? 2-4 months? I’ve personally been happiest buying the right thing the first time rather than trying to cover it with the budget version I’ll eventually replace especially when the difference isn’t multi-thousands.

      I disagree. The difference doesn't justify the price tag, not at all. I am always for the better quality, I own 2 Dangerous Music pieces for example, but here there is no difference in quality, and the price difference is enormous. Big time the WARM Audio

    • @nambams
      @nambams 2 роки тому +1

      It's an easy choice to make if you can afford the difference. Many people are just scraping by and looking to improve while staying on a budget. The price difference is easily a month's rent or more.

    Care to elaborate? Not targeted at OP but A bit tired of those random "sounds better" type of comments. Feeling the differences between VCA-based compressors is not something you can randomly "get" nor is it anything that obvious. "Clearly sounds better" - Yeah, right. I bet a quick listen to any of the mixes of these overnight sound experts would prove their ears are not as fine tuned as what they'd have us believe 👍 Maybe a good principle could be: If most people don't recognise your mixes as sounding outstanding, please think twice before asserting how good anything sounds
