- I'm back on the farm after a trip to the UK & working hard to get the farm fenced to keep the dogs safe!
Being a DIYer & new to fence building, I hit a few problems along the way but persevered & found my own solutions! You'll never learn if you don't try 🙂
Please LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoy it & SUBSCRIBE if you want to see more!
Also say hi in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

I just rewatched this "old" video and am really missing Victoria. Nothing against you, Ricky, but she is a very good partner in your newer vlogs. I like that you have fun with each other and both seem to try your best. Good luck with your adventure.
I doubt you'll see this comment cos I'm catching up on your whole journey from the start. Remember that those that fear failure never progress, so I doff my cap to you. Also, I'm already welling up every time I see your interaction with Poppy. You've certainly got a great dog there and very well done for your compassion taking her into your family
Just started watching, hi from SC, US! LOVE the content, truly entertained by your sense of humor and I appreciate how you explain everything you're doing, before you do it, lol. That's the sign of a person who loves teaching and learning equally. Keep up the good work, will be binging the channel this weekend!
In my 65 years I have made tons of mistakes and will make a lot more but like you, I love to learn. With age comes wisdom and you my friend are going to build a lot of wisdom.
It's nice to see you back Ricky. You were missed.
Thanks Bryan, it’s good to be back. Couldn’t agree more, learning is key & I hope to be full of wisdom in 30 years time like my grandfathers
Hello, I only recently found your channel and i'm enjoying it so much! I think what your doing is fantastic I love both of your dogs Poppy is such a beautiful loving soul. She was searching for you and found you my heart was filled with joy when you took her in, bless you both. I would love to see Victoria in the videos as well. You have done a great job on the fence as well!
Looks like you have found a beautiful patch of heaven on earth! I wish you the very best and looking forward to your coming videos ... ❣
There’s nothing wrong with learning by doing. You never forget the stuff you learn this way. Nice work! 😊
Thanks Barbara! 😊 I couldn’t agree more - knowledge is key!
Poppy is God Sent 🙂 You are building a whole WHEEL of HAPPINESS, with Victoria, Ted and Poppy (or Poppie?) - exactly : learn to do things yourself, you save money yes, but above all you learn a new trade (one day could come handy) having also a lot of fun.
Great job you made it look really tidy , love the gates . That smaller wire will keep out other animals and vermin
You may not see this comment. But I take your point about wanting to do the work yourself. The other big plus is that by buying locally you are both contributing to the local economy. Almost a win-win for both partners. Cheers
You're not living if you're not learning. It looks great, love your vlog. So happy you're back.
What a great saying Lenny. That’s literally my outlook on life. I’ll remember that one 👍🏼
Welcome back Ricky. You are doing a great job and I love your “can do “ attitude. Poppy looks great and both dogs seem so happy and loved. I look forward to following you and Victoria on your adventure.
Thank you Daisie 😊 Both dogs are doing very well thank you. Although Ted is currently hiding under the table because there’s thunder & lightening outside. He hates it, although he’s become less sensitive with age. Poppy on the other hand couldn’t care less 😂
Poppy looks gorgeous ❤
We love watching you guys, well done you. Please ask people to subscribe and like etc. Tell them it costs them nothing but helps you. And from a 78 year old grandmother please tell your lovely lady to wear a sun hat to keep to keep that lovely skin. And from us thank you soooo much for keeping Poppy and loving her so much
I am watching you videos one by one
Well…
I don’t think anybody who is watching your channel regularly sir, minds the odd mistake or two… quite the opposite, I think !
It’s part of the fun and since you and your wife picked a lovely spot, a bit rough and basic, but for us viewers there will be big improvements for all of us to see … THAT is fun and lovely to watch, at the same time …
Good job sir …
Greetings from Germany everybody… 👋
Stay safe 👍
Just remember the professional trades man also had trial and error to get to the end results. I am super proud of you...doing a great job
My husband and I do it the same way, do and learn as you go is the way.
As long as the mistakes aren't expensive, they're great teachers!
Couldn’t agree more Dan. Luckily all this cost me was time
You’re heading in the right direction. My wife’s grandfather was a farmer. There wasn’t anything he could not do. That is part of being a farmer.
The fence looks great Ricky! So good to see you and Poppy again!
Thanks Teri! 😊
Poppy’s new nickname is Velcro 😂
She looks sooooo happy even though you can tell she’s missing her buddy.
I bet she was so happy to see him, when he came back from the vet 🎉
Ok, video 4 or 5, I’m hooked! You have another subscriber! I’m watching a lot of Portugal homesteaders…a lot! I hope u guys get to know some of them!
To limit the view obstruction, simply install angled brace posts on either side of the corner posts at 90 degrees from each other. Looking from above it would be an L shape. The angled braces into the ground resists the tension from the fencing in the same direction.
Great to see you again.
Thanks Marjan 😊
It is looking great and you did it yourself.
That is really good.
I love how neat and clean and tidy you keep the property!
Gotta thank you again for saving Poppy, and of course for your wonderful videos, so, "thanks again".
Thanks for watching Abby. I’m so glad we saved her. She’s one of the family now ❤️
Dear guys! Thanks for sharing your videos! Best wishes on your way! Dream come true! ✨️ ❤🎉
You did s great job on that fencing. Congratulations
Praise the Lord for the rain. And then the digging is also easier
It looks very nice. Good job 👏 👍🏻
Nice job. very interesting to see the progress. and great video! congrats!
Thanks! 😊
Looks great ❤️
Thanks Andreia 😊
Thanks for sharing!!
I loved when your level was moving all by itself and I am so jealous of all your olive trees. You're so lucky for having such a beautiful sunset. Thanks fo letting us enjoying every single details with you.👍
Terrific job Ricky. Looks great. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Barbara! 😊
The best teacher is your last mistake, takecare, your fence is great👍
Sound advice John!👍🏼
welcome back
Thanks Elaine, it’s good to be back!
bring the concrete above grade and taper to shed water away from your posts or they will rot at the base
Welcome home Ricky, good to see you back on the farm, I am running behind with my video watching... about to watch your next one... Cheers for sharing your mistakes and progress... they work hand in hand.
That sunset shot!!! Beautiful!
We get some INCREDIBLE sunsets here! Hope to get a better camera in the future so I can capture them in more detail
That's what DIY is all about. Learning by doing. Educating and Experincing . Making Mistakes. You become wiser . The thing we like about you Ricky is your work ethic and determination to get things done .Looking forward to the next projects. Sending you and the misses and the doggies much love🙏❤🙏 from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki .
Thanks guys! I couldn’t agree more - you have to learn by doing 😊
A good practice when concreting wood or metal posts is to pour the concrete so it’s a little higher than the grade of the ground and crown the concrete around the post so water doesn’t pool around it causing it to rot prematurely.
Hi John. I have crowned the concrete but 50mm below ground level & will fill with gravel so there still won’t be any sitting water & it will run off 👍🏼
You are such a hard worker,. Keep on "learning" as you accomplish so much. Love everything about your videos. Your pups are both gorgeous. Greetings from a Portuguese who's been in Canada most of her life. Miss beautiful Portugal.
I watch you all the way from South Africa. Love your videos. Great attitude and great fence!
Thank you Carla! 😊 I hope you’re having a great week in South Africa 🇿🇦
Is Theo not able to give a hand.
He’s got lots of farm goodies
Good luck.
Good for you. Problem solving is so good for a person
Thank you for another interesting and enjoyable video. Look forward to the next one.
Thanks Bill 😎
Love watching your project and hopefully I'm learning from some of your mistakes! Thank you for showing the whole bit and keeping it REAL! Fantastic!!
Thanks Melissa! 😊 I definitely made a fair few mistakes this time! I’m sure you won’t make the same ones 😂
Happy to see that the dogs are enjoying their life.
Two very happy dogs! ❤️
I admire your tenacity, why pay someone? You’re so right Ricky , you and Victoria are building up the land and it’s beautiful. Poppy is so sweet, glad she has a great home. All the best to you both.
Thank you Julie 😊
I was wondering where you went Rick!!!
I like your videos and all your hard work on your farm. Your Property is Beautiful!!!
Nice to see you back. Making mistakes is part of the learning process matey !
Thanks Addie 😊 Couldn’t agree more - mistakes are necessary!
I’m getting on now, but taught myself electrics, plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, framing etc. over the years and out of necessity I taught myself plastering during lockdown lol Mind you I still wouldn’t tackle a ceiling 🤣
@@TofferJ-UK woah you’re a jack of all trades! I’ve never done plastering before but would definitely not want to do a ceiling. Painting a ceiling is bad enough! 😂
Nice job! Knowledge is invaluable. Also so much more satisfying when you do a job yourself. Well done!
Thanks Halina! 😊 Knowledge is key!
Your welcome!
Great work Ricky. A few things did not go according to plan but as you said it's a learning experience. It'll be good to see some greenery returning with the resumption of the rain.
Thanks Raymonda! We’ve got torrential rain almost every day for the next 10 days so you can expect to see a lot more green! 😊
Love all of your videos. Great to see progress
Welcome back. The best way to learn is to jump right in. The dogs are beautiful.
Couldn’t agree more! I learn best by doing 😊
Bonjours du Québec Canada 12 DEC 2023.. Très bien pour un nouveau farmer tu as très bien combien le priciple de fixer le a cloture , je viens de découvrir ta chaîne j'aime bien 🤠🙆
Even professional fencers run into issues now and then. The important thing is learning and to not be bothered by a few snags. You've done a fabulous job Ricky! Like Poppy, my cat used to get those sticky little balls in her fur when I lived in the countryside in Spain. It was horrible becsuse she had really long hair and hated being brushed. So I'd have to sneakily use scissors or take her to the vet to be shaved :)
I don’t know where those prickly little things come from but I’d be happy to never see one again! They’re the bane of my life! 😂
Great work on the fence. The dogs look loved and healthy. You look energetic and ready to get more done on the farm. Glad the rains are coming. Well done!
Thanks Scott 👍🏼 the dogs are loving having each other for company (& being spoiled by us!)
Here in the UK concrete and timber = timber death. It could will be different where you are. Godfathers are always a good option as is the longest post you can get in. You may find that over time the wire goes a bit floppy but your stakes will hold it all up
And just to add, putting in stock fencing can throw up all sorts of strange effects when dealing with contoured ground.
Looks great, does the job, field fencing is so much different from fencing a garden with wooden panelling
I love to be self sufficient, even if my products/projects don't always turn out pretty.
But I simply can't afford tradesman. As much easier as it would be. $25 a foot for fence. $50 an hour for a electrician....
You’re doing a good job! Having challenges and making mistakes make us grow. Poppy looks lovely.
Thanks Barbara 😊 It can definitely be frustrating making mistakes but luckily all it cost me was time & I’ve learnt in the process
Hi Ricky thank you for continuing to share your project, it is inspiring. The different music tracks in the background were a good choice. It has started raining here in Cyprus aswell. We occasionally get dust aswell from the Middle East and Africa. Looking forward to your next upload. Take care. 👍
Love that you are back making videos and inspiring us all to DIY !
Thank you for watching Berenice! ❤️
I love it. The thing is you are in Iberia. Have you come to enjoy the benefits and the not so benefit only, or have you come for that and also become a Portuguese and if need be defend Iberia with your life and from here you defend Iberia in every interest including against your original nationality interest that is usually going after the Spanish next door? Keep up the great work and do not give up.
It looks awesome!! Love your enthusiastic willingness to learn-the process is as important as the end result in terms of a life well lived!😉😁
Thank you! 😊 The process & not being scared of making mistakes is so important, although if I’m being honest, it’s sometimes hard to remember that when I’m frustrated by the mistake I’ve just made 😂
It is about the journey, isn’t it?
Ricky if you looked into Justin Rhodes permaculture you would see that removable electric fencing for farm animals allows your property to work for you and your animals remove brambles and fortify the land for gardening. LUMNAH acres utuber Al is also another homesteader to watch and learn from. Al is moving from one farming homestead to a newer one where he built his home. You have a great work ethic and growing up on a small 100 acre farm I wish my dad was aware of Permaculture it would have saved him a lot of Tim and hardwork!Consistently moving chickens in chicken trailers and pigs do the work for you! I know a lot of farmers that use this method and it is amazing!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Blessings
Thanks for the tips Laura. I’ve seen lumnah acres before - I think they were converting a shipping container at the time. Will definitely check out Justin Rhodes 👍🏼
Hi again Ricky. After watching the full vid I must say I love your focus on solutions to problems to remedy mistakes. I have a friend of a friend who says, “Everything is always figure-outable.” I love that philosophy. It reminds me to not ever give up…one step in front of the other. Always.
I also love how you welcomed the rain-both the greenery it brought & the alleviation of some of the drought that we’ve been also experiencing here in NH USA & elsewhere arnd the globe.
Love also how much you adore your velcro pup-what a sweetheart & may
you all have many healthy years ahead of you together.🌀✌🏼🤗
#SacredBlessings💙
It sounds like we all share the same philosophy! Every problem has many solutions, it’s just a case of staying calm enough to figure one out! 😂
@@LifebyLiving Yes, that staying calm part is the tricky part, eh? Keep up the great work. I love your growing channel.
What a great video, I like your positive attitude and even keel personality. Hooray for the rain! (S. Calif-we need it too!) Your music is calming. Great job on the fences!
Thank you! 😊
Hey nice to see you again 😊 hope you had a wonderful visit back home,am glad it's finally raining at your farm 😊 we learn by doing so I really like the way you are fixing that fence 😊the dogs look happy 🤗
Thanks Michelle! It’s nice to be back! Yes two very happy pups (most of the time) 😊
Hi, good to see you back on UA-cam. Good job with all the work done so far. Take care. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Yvonne! It’s good to be back 😀 Thank you for watching ❤️
Checked my subscription cos I thought something had gone wrong. Glad your back, looking forward to seeing next blog
Thank you 👍🏼 Now I’m back I’ll be uploading more regularly 😎
Very informative. It was well worth the effort - love from Manchester/ UK
You are learning a lot. Don’t feel too down. You will b flying it in no time 🎉
Thanks Maureen. It’s all a learning experience 😊
Really satisfying putting the fencing up, well done.
Thanks Annie! 😊
Omg Rick thank you for coming back and new video!! Your fence looks really good.
Thanks Hong!
You might find that a double wire brace will aid you in the long term. The brace when finished would look like a X. Thanks for posting
👍👍
I think it looks terrific and you did a great job!
Learning experiences are invaluable.
Thank you for sharing with us.
Good to see you back :-)
Thank you Sue! 😊 I’m really happy with how it turned out 👍🏼
Great work Ricky not a easy job on your own ! Learn by doing !!
Thanks Pat 🙂
i know someone who will be fuming the way you treated that grape vine and they don,t live too far away from you lol
Thank you for the video, Ricky. You are doing great. You should get Theo to come help!
Thank you Vee! 😊
You've made a lovely job on the fencing well done you. Have a good week ahead xx
Thanks Gaynor! Hope you have a great week too! 😊
Life is a learning curve
You're doing a great job! So glad you got the cement mixer!
Thanks Sharon! 😊 Me too! It saved my back from the paddle mixer!
For a dit project this is pretty good. Everybody has to learn, whatever it is.
Don't pull out every time the stuff from Poppy. It sticks in the fur and won't fal down onto the floor in the house. At least the most of it.
We tend to give her a good brush outside before she comes in & that gets most of it off
Oh, life was difficult without the invention of a cement mixer….. I do love a cement mixer…. Boom 🍺
Hooray, You're back. Missed your happy videos Ricky. Poppy is so sweet. She trusts you completely or she wouldn't expose her belly to you. Happy dog, happy life and a happy wife. You are doing a great job on the fence. I wonder why though you didn't fill the cement to just above the dirt and slope it away from the post so rain can drain away from the post. Just curious.
Thanks Pat, it’s good to be back! I did slope the concrete away from the post but at 50mm below ground level with gravel on top. The water will drain through the gravel & slide away from the post on the concrete. I didn’t want the concrete mounded above ground as it would have made it impossible to put the fence to the ground. Hope that makes sense 😊
Another great video, just love escaping to Portugal for 30 mins. I know the corners took longer and used more items but I think they look very good and will last a whole lot longer than one corner post.
Thanks Andy 👍🏼 The corner post is definitely so much stronger now & will last a lot longer
Well, Helloooo😊 How happy have you made Poppy (the velcro dog lolol)?? It is fantastic to see both dogs loving their home and each other...makes my heart so happy🥰🤗 I tell you what, Ricky, your work ethic is admirable. Solving problems without having a meltdown sure takes some doing (in my case at least, I'd have drop kicked that damned fence🤣) You made a fab job of it. Credit to you for sticking at it. I can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you Viv! 😊 Tbh I’m definitely prone to a meltdown in the heat of the moment, but I’ve learnt over the years that it doesn’t solve anything…doesn’t mean they don’t still happen though! 😂
Ricky the fence looks great. I'm sure Victoria can make a feature in that corner. Poppy looking good. Hope all went well at the Vets. Your looking so much more relaxed with your filming. X
Thank you Kaz! I’m feeling a little more natural in front of the camera but it is definitely a skill that will take a while to get used to!
Glad you are back. Nice to see family especially when you have been away so long. The fence is looking great.
Thanks Kate! It’s good to be back😊
Hey Ricky, as you've discovered, end assemblies and corner braces are essential. At the beginning, that concreted post although firm would eventually start to sag.
A tip for the future, your posts should be perpendicular to the ground, not plumb level. To some degree, it will help alleviate the problems with tensioning 'mesh' type fences that you've encountered. Also when you have reasonable changes in land angle either over a hill (rise) or across a gully (dip) it is normal practice to put an extra brace assembly in the fence at that point so the tensioning happens at the brace. Picture going from one rise, across a dip to another rise. When you tension, the force wants to pull the posts in the dip up out of the ground.
Kudos to you for starting your farm fencing career with one of the harder types of fencing.
If you're going to end up with livestock, sheep, goats (especially) or even small cattle or god forbid, Alpacas, you will need to run a strand of single wire along the bottom and top of that mesh and then ring lock the mesh to the wires. This will stop them from pushing the top down (taller stock and climbers like goats do this) or push the bottom out (sheep)..
Sing out if you have any questions. ..Chris (the organic farmer)
Thanks for the feedback Chris 👍🏼 I wish I had put the H brace posts perpendicular to the ground as it would have ran parallel to the top of the fence line too & wouldn’t have looked so wonky
Hello Ricky. Good to see you. I hope you three are well. You are doing such a great job. I love your attitude. Thank you for sharing your projects with us. Love and Blessings to you all.
Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Thanks Doris! 😊 Thank you for watching
never seen corner posts done that way ever and i been fencing for 30 years
always cut a small knotch 3/4 up from ground level and then put in a support post from knotch to the ground, where post contacts the ground put in a short post to hold "brace post" in position. when you tension fence it tightens against the brace post, imagin a K but without the top 45 degree line, then put another brace post on other fence line and bobs your uncle
Wonderful to see you back 😃
Thanks Raymond. It’s good to be back 👍🏼
Working on the farm sometimes is like climbing a mountain three steps up one step down good work good video. 🇨🇦
Thanks Les. That’s a good analogy for farm life! Two steps forward, one step back, but just make sure that you keep on moving!
@@LifebyLiving Exactly.
Hi, You must "paint" the cement mixer with used car oil, or the cement will be grabbed to the mixer.
Not heard that before, thanks for the tip
@@LifebyLiving usually we paint the outside of the cement mixer "barrel".
Those sands from the Sahara are such a blessing for the soil as it fertilizes the land. Its very common to have theses skies every other year!
It’s the 3rd time we’ve had it this year. Creates such a crazy colour in the sky!
