- The guys go over some basic rules when trying to figure out how much power your car's stock electrical system can handle. They mention that the rule of thumb is your car's factory electrical uses 40-60% of the power your stock alternator produces. Be sure to upgrade all electrical components (Alternator, Battery, Big 3 Upgrade) if you plan on pushing some serious power!
How many Watts do you think is needed to do a hair trick? Answer in comments below!

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED before I went and spent too much on getting a sub/amp combo that was too much for me to power right!
you guys need to explain your equations, the 1440 watts that you calculated is based on ohms law equation that is P=IxE, where p is power or watts and i is amps and e is volts, therefore amps multiplied by volts equals watts!!!!!!!!!!!!! you also need to consider efficiency of both the amplifier and alternator, and that the alternator puts out these 14.4 volts when its running and not at idle.
No the 1440 is based on Alt Amp output 100A X Voltage 14.4V = Current output of the Alternators capabilities 1440C, but other things feed off that as well, so u need a amp that is roughly say gonna need 100A like a Kicker CXA1200.1 which uses the power efficiently!~
If you go like bigger 3000W or bigger u will need a AGM Battery like a XS Power D3400 an upgrading ya alt some helps, but 2 much can cause issues with older vehicles!~
Wow I thought alternators were an unnecessary upgrade unless you were looking for big power like 3k plus, thank you for the information
Keep it simple- rule of thumb has always been 750 - 1,000 watts you should be good to go stock
Rms or max watt
Not true, I remember when I 1st started in car audio, I had an 1,000watt memphis PR amp on 2 kicker L7's, a 140 stock alternator & my lights were dimming when the bass hit, so my rule of thumb is no matter what you're running overdo your electrical. Especially 1,000 worms or more aftermarket alternator & at least 1 beefy supplemental battery or more depending on wattage
Thank you bro! Now I can see if my electrical system will work or not.
How can I..? What will a..? oh wait, I almost forgot Sonic Electronix doesn't respond to comments =)
amen
3:06 that was exactly my question and exactly how much RMS I'm putting out thank God my mechman 240 amp alt is on the way
I need to upgrade my alternator myself both my amps combined is 2500W
ohh so this could result in dimming of lights? thanks m8
Didnt know bro i'm sorry
Yes it will I have big 4 upgrade 1/0 ofc and 320 mechman still have dimming ordered led headlights. But dimming will still occur inside. Waiting on my d6500 battery. Last piece to system and only running 2k on 2 12s
Now, that would be cool to see....ten 100 watt subwoofers on a 1000 watts for hair tricks.
Yea for real, why nobody does this? Too much box space needed?
How many Watts it take to do hair tricks is a hard question.
Better question....
How many liters of air do I need to move in order to get a decent hair trick?
BrothaRobMusic SUV
So I don't have my Lambo yet which means I don't know if it'll handle an SVS PB-16 Ultra...
The alt does not continue to charge the battery in modern cars while running, really only takes a few seconds to top off a battery that was only just used to start the car. Also the voltage drops considerably when the demand is not there. Modern voltage regulators also keep the cars electrical system from being able to charge many deep cycle batteries that are recommended for car audio, as the required voltage has to exceed the batteries top charge; you will never get the full use of the battery without expensive electrical upgrades.
Holy shit,! It's the guy from sound man! I'm sorry I forgot your name. Thanks for the info guys
My sub is 600 watts rms and the amp is 800 RMS all at 1 ohm. I have a 2018 Chevy Malibu with I think a 100+ amp alternator I think 100-130 amp alternator. My xs power d4800 died within almost 2 months charged it. No luck? Warranty covered?
Plain and simple.
When choosing car amplifier go for class D amps, class AB amplifiers will demand more current than the specified wattage. EFFICIENCY IS THE REAL WATTAGE
So, let me get this straight. A 100A alternator is good for around 1440W but a 240A alternator is only good for 2400W..... Your little calculator trick should have pulled out 3456W.. Might want to explain this math on the 240A alternator.
I ran 440 watts on a 60 amp alternator all 0 gauge wire. 18 to 20 gauge wire from amp to sub, bout 2 foot long, 2 ohm load, 40 amp inline fuse. My alternator went out within a year. Fuse is still fine
bob P=IV... you have to measure the Voltage in each situation... smh
You think ill be good with a 2016 foster running 1500 watt amp
Should I use my factory alternator charging wire with my zero gauge.. Or remove the factory charging wire?.. I kept it. It's fine
You remove it.
@@jimmyburke845 electricity chooses the path of least resistance. so it doesn't matter. the current will flow through the thicker wire. less resistance
60% of my civc's 70 amp is roughly 600 watts.. so I have 400 to play with.. god damnit lol. I thought I was safe with my 500 watt monoblock but even that bitch is getting starved of power.. May seriously need to think of upgrading my alternator. fuckin fuck
Just try to replace the stock one with something like a 100, or 120A, it's a civic, plenty of aftermarket parts
I have a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, and was thinkin of upgrading that 70 amp POS to a 170 amp Mechman Alternator they have on their site for $300.
Car Audio Inc
my 86 crown victoria has a 2000w amplifier. about 1000w rms. No lights dimming, haven't even upgraded to the big 3. Haven't had any issues at all.
BRBingeDrinker if you go over 1k watts like I did and add a 500 watt 4 channel amp you'll need to.
My stock alt is 65 amp. Doing your math and being conservative at say 60% of that alternator would mean my car needs 561 watts to run. Leaving me roughly 375 watts of headroom. Taking this into consideration, I've now upgraded to a 130amp alt. If I subtract that 561 from my available watts on the new alt, I'm left with 1,311 extra watts give or take I can now use. Is this right? Trying to install a class d 1200 watt rms amp this should be adequate then no?
youre good, just do the big 3 and add another battery
I upgraded from a stock 160 amp alternator to a h/o 250 amp alternator with the big 3 and 2 AGM batteries. I'm running a 3k amp but my voltage is dropping into the low 12s
B Krazey what kind of car is it?
Ditch the agms.. Get a lithium
Have you tested your alternator to verify it’s output? Additionally man HO alts @ idle only provide 130-145amps
If you're doing hair tricks you'll be doing tinnitus when you're 50
If you have dimming which you will. Get a HO ALT. IF YOU THINK YOU NEED IT YOU WILL AND DO.
I have a 2018 Yaris IA with a stock 90 amp alternator. And I'm installing a single 12 inch sub with a 800rms monoblock. Do I need to upgrade my stock alternator?
Yes your car is putting out around 900w without considering efficiency and your car is also using 40-60% of your alternators output so you would definitely be underpowered.
No unless you are absolutely blasting using that full 600-1000rms
There is only a set amount of amperage your car needs... therefore if you upgrade and lets say you double your amperage it doesnt mean your car will still consume 50% of that amperage, now it will be 25% of that upgraded value.
Back in the 90's this dude at my school had an s10 with a fiberglass topper & 9 soundstream spl 15s on a 900w or 1k soundstream amp and it was about hair trick insane. the cones were hardly moving. He was running his smaller mids amp cause the big ones got jacked. Effin ppl man
thats because its a lot or surface area, you could have a 21" death penalty on 25 watts and it'd do hair tricks
hair trick = 10,000 watts minimum and a minimum of 4 15s or 6 12s imo
Please help me, i got a ground zero amp that says on paper 5000 watt rms at 12,6 and 5600 at 14,4 and i got 3 agm batteries and stock alt at 140a so how big alternator would i need? i've been looking on a 320a...
Now I actually have a question i bought a stinger battery 1200 and it sat in my car then bought their 40 watt charger and its dead is there anyway what so ever to revive it I've been told that once its sulfated its dunso?!!!!
Sorry if I’m stupid but what is he basing the 14.4v from the amp the alternator the battery lol just wanna make sure my math is right
I did it with a linear power 5002iq on A sundown x18 It’s a 500 W amp but does way more It would make hair stand
when you buy a stereo from sonic electronix does the stereo adapting box for the certain type of car come with the stereo or where do you get one?
I have a 3000 watt monoblock class D amplifier 2 15s power bass subwoofers an a stock alternator what size will i need for a 2004 dodge durango 4.7.
im running a sundown 1000 watt mono block amp at 500 rms to each sub at 1ohn and my alnater is 145 do i need to upgrade my alnator i have a 2003 pontica grand am se
I have a 100 amp alternator and I want to upgrade by getting sundown audio 1500 watt rms amp and a sundown audio 500.4 amp giving out 200 watts to each Channel,if I’m correct the whole system would be around 2000 watts, can I just upgrade my alternator and not the battery?
for the other side of the fence. I can only do a slight not very impressive hair trick with my two dayton 18s (DSC450-4) in IB with a 500 watt RMS amp (KAC-8105D). in my 2006 acura TSX.
I am running 1250 watts rms currently and my lights do not dim, i have a 150 or 170amp alternator, not sure which one. Will i be able to run an extra 400watts rms without needing to upgrade my electrical system.
Yes, you may want to use a nicer main battery or second battery. A lot of people get away with running 2krms on just upgrading the big 3.
Is a 750 watt sound system on a 100 amp alternator ok? Or will I ruin my alt?
I would suggest 600 watts to be on the safe side, that's what I'm looking for since my stock alternator is 105 amps.
Just bought mtx terminator subs with 400 watt amp would I be okay with stock electrical. Car is 2010 Honda Accord also have 2 farad capacitor installed
What kind alternator size do I need for a 700w 5channel amp.. would 220..do?
You wouldn’t need an upgrade unless you are doing 7000
Hi I have a question about Toyota hybrid. How much watts can I get out of the system for music
Question number 1: why is the marker saturated with amplifiers and subwoofers that don't even come close to their rated power output and handling?
Question number 2: why do big stores like y'all's sell them to us, expecting us to just take it in the arse without lube?
Its your job
To research. But a lot of companies use cheap parts that arent capable of producing even close to rated power. The other reason is box rise. Similations you see arent real word results
This is what I needed.
I have a 2004 cadillac deville with a 4k watt system ... What amperage alternator should i use....
300a or bigger.
THE WATTS YOUR TALKING ABOUT ARE RMS CORRECT NOT PEAK?
Hello I have 2 American bass Hd D2 12s with a American bass Vfl comp5k. The biggest Altenator I could find Was a 390 amp Altenator will that be enough and should I add a Battery?
I'm confused by their math... In the 1st example, they said if I have a 100 amp alternator with 14.4 volts that means the car can handle 1440 watts but then they said you need at least a 240 amp alternator to run a 2400 watt system. Shouldn't it be ~220 amp alternator if upgrading from a 100 amp factory alternator where 50% is needed for the car itself... assuming we are still considering 14.4 volts?
Is it safe to run your power cable from the amplifier to the alternator or is it better to run it off the battery
Michael Martinez i run my power wire off my fuse panel
Any recommended literature or site for audio car electrical calculations?
What was the 14.4 volts based off of
so my amp is rated 3000w at 12.6, i have 1 second battery i lucked out with a great charging system and hold voltage resting at 14.6 to 14.8 have seen 14.9 for a blip. running big 3 with 250 amps fueses all around. my problem is my box building capabilities and trunk size. recommended box size is 7 cubes at 31 hz. i can get the 31 hz and i can get the port volume but not the cubic ft how small would make a huge impact on performance ? i feel like 6.5 would be the smallest i would like to go but want to go with 6.8 that will be the largest box i can fit in the trunk.
What's a good setup on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler switching out all stock speakers not trying to pay a arm and a leg roughly around 800-1000$

How do I factor in a battery or cap bank?
Guys i have a predicament i have a total draw of 546 amps from a sound system i designed for my truck but I don’t want to add another battery or 5 fucking alternator what should i do?
I’m thinking about doing a yellow top and then upgrading my alternator a big 3 then a small maxwells ultra cap bank
What would make the ground traces in my head unit burn out? Happened twice already.
i got 3krms bass a 2krms and another 3k amps how many watts alternator i need for that can some help me out
🔴 Does this change with a second bass amp❓
I have a amp per sub.
no your system required power is still required you could have 500 amps at 1000 watts but not be able to run them because you only have 800w of current available
Jaywalkin bro whaat.. this comment gave me brain damage.
can i put a system in a 2012 lincoln hybrid ?
i got a hifonics 2k at .3 ohm on a 220 amp alt and 2 kenetic 1400s...big 4(not big 3) upgrade with 2/0 ...voltage dosnt drop below 14.2 during play
hittin-low_150db+ yup
Can anyone answer my question I have a 09 honda accord with a 130 amp alternator stock and a kicker solo baric single 12 sub @750 rms and amp that's 800 watts to power that sub do I need to upgrade the alternator?? Please answer I'm not seeing any lights dimming but just want a second opinion and I also had my system installed professionally
Your good no need to upgrade, 75amps alone can feed an amps 950-1000rms
@David Herrera thank you
I have a 97 Honda Accord, running two 12s and a 1,000watt amp do I need to upgrade or is it fine?
@@papisauve hey joker, im about to upgrade my amp to 800 watts rms on the stock 130 amp alt. how is your setup holding up?
@@mattgokey I haven't had any electrical problems since I got it professionally installed it'll be almost a year. And that's with one kicker solo baric 12 @ 750rms and amp is 800 watts @ 2ohms i didn't think that 130amp could handle the power but it does and the guy who installed it said I shouldn't have problems because I'm not running no huge system over 1200 rms. I also have a capacitor aswell my lights barely dim, very faintly, and still reads @14.2 volts 👍
Wait is Amp hour the same as amps in this case
Amp hours is the amount of amps it'll use in an hour
What about for a 4,000 rms I have a 2001 Ford F-150 King ranch and I got the big 3 all 0 gauge and a stock battery up front and a XS power 2400 in the back
Your gonna want to either get a big ass alternator or 2 alternator your choice
As far as how big it has to be do the math 14.4volts times the amps of the alternator example: 100a * 14.4v = 1440watts take in to fact 50% for vehicle drain
Would a 4 by 40 watts rms amp be fine on a stock battery\alternator?
I was thinking of bridging the rear channels for a sub.
I don’t want super dooper bass,I listen to very old prog rock and jazz and some metal like Mastodon and lots of alternative.
My idea was putting in Focal i30 5 1\4 2 way splits to the front channels of the amp,Alpine 8 inch sub with enclosure for the bridged rears on the amp and running the stock rear side door speakers through the rear speaker terminals of the head unit.
Whats the cheapest and best battery to but thats the next step up from stock battery in a 2006 f150? Im around 1000 watts and have 2 amps.
You would need an AGM deep cycle battery. I have an Optima yellow top that's designed for use with car audio. It cost around $200. The charge lasts much longer than any regular battery.
@Sonic Electronix Hey team sonic or anyone else reading.. I got a 2014 mazda 3 sedan with a 2.5L motor with a 100A stock alternator. I'm planning on running 2 12" kicker CVX woofers @ 2 ohms via Kicker Kx 1600.1 Monoblock. I'm gonna be upgrading my stock battery to an XS Power D5100 and doing the Big 3 with 0 gauge OFC wiring.
what are your guys's thoughts on alternators? Do you think I'll need one?
Bouge laal great question. I also want to know. Any feedback yet?
Ale Wu no u dont should be fine with an extra battery especially an xs. Ur running a small system should be fine if all the gains are set properly and subs are wired correctly
Why would cartoys not help with small 5 second questions
hell um runng 2000 on stock 120 alt with spare 600watt battery runs good
Im trying to get a 4000-6000rms setup. What should i upgrade on my truck to get that.
300-350 amp alt, 20 AH lithium battery, 0 gauge runs, 0 gauge factory engine ground, all OFC wire.
My Lexus hybrid does not have an alternator, just generator. Can I install a small 300 W×1 JL 30 amp mono amp. To a single 12, or will it destroy the electric hybrid battery and generator? I need bass ;(
generator is almost the same thing, just do your research to see how it charges the 12v side. Its got a convertor somewhere that charges the high voltage battery in the back. I personally dont like touching hybrids, and i work at a dealership. They are super dangerous, can kill you easily if you touch the wrong thing under the hood. Good luck!
I need upgrade my alternator to run 800 rms amp and 800 rms subwoofer thank you
The single hair on my left butt cheek does hair trick everytime i play my system in my car 😅. Its only a 800 watts system single 12
hair trick with 2 Kicker L7s.. guess what size
maybe you can help me out a bit with more info with my system.
What would i need for my 2000 ford excursion im running 3 15"s txx-bd3 audio pipes my stock alternator is 140 and i know it cant push it i have a secondary battery a optima yellow top deep cycle batter and a 10 farrad stinger capacitor and my amp is an amercian bass 4480. so about a 4500 watt amp i channel mono block i havent gotten my system install cause i dont know what size alternator to get and im also upgrading all factory wire with 0 guage copper wire, im looking at an 270 amp alternator from DC power i just dont know what size alternator to get to be safe...
340 amp
Just like they said, buy the biggest alt you can fit
+Bryant Peoples doesnt that amp put out the maximum watts at 12.4 volts

Gregory Steele get 0 gauge power& ground wire. go sonicelectronics purchase upgrade alternator & 2 xs batt that fit your vehicle.buy isolator & big 3 upgrade finally scrape to metal ground better connection. that would solve your problems
Gregory Steele get a 200 amp alternator and big 3. Trust me. It's worth it
What about a gen 2 , 2007 prius i have no altinator in the prius so how do i upgrade power
qptrainwreckqp easy enough, the whole car is electric motor and battery
qptrainwreckqp get a new car
Why do you have a Prius ...
It would cost 2 much to upgrade those batt so stick with a 350 to 400 watt mono block single 12 Rockford p2d4 woofer on ported box . change stock radio run the mids with efficient speakers like infiniti you would make nice sounds.
So how much amperage does a 500 watt mono amp use? This didnt really help
Can’t do your own math? Literally division
Would anybody be able to tell me what amperage on stock alternator a 2019 Honda Accord sport has and if it would be ok with just 1500 watt amp powering 1 15 inch subwoofer?
my dad has done 4k watts on stock alternator just using a marine battery and capacitor
@Sonic Electronix what's the average cost to install a stereo and an amplifier
I only want 1 alternator on my truck [2005 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.7L hemi] as it will also be a performance vehicle and don't want a shitLOAD of extra stress on the engine.
So far I've found a maximum of a 370 amp alternator that's 330 hot. Stock alternator is 136, I think, and an upgraded one that comes on certain pagages{towing and plowing} is 160 amps.
So, with all of that in mind, what would you guys estimate to be the maximum total system wattage RMS that I would be able to run?
700 rms on stock running at 1500RPM's (not idle) but a dodge ram 1500 is no "performance vehicle" its a truck you use to haul your push mower in. you're worried about putting stress on the engine (lol proves my point)

what size alt do I need to push a DC audio 7.5k and how many batteries

Another question,is there a resonant frequency that is present in all cars that can be teduced by putting audio files into a daw and using eq to filter it out?
every car is different. rather than EQ the file you could put an EQ on the stereo system.

yellowtop isnt enough for the xtr amp, you need a battery with a bigger AH. i think the optima is only in the 50s or 60s but you need something thats over 100AH. i assume youve also done the big 3 upgrade
1 18 solo x can do a big hair trick
Hey dudes I have a question I have a 2012 subaru outback.. I'm putting in 2 12 type s newer model ..with 2 mono mrv 500 rms watts amps to each sub .. do I need to upgrade anything?
Will I be ok with 2 capacitor??
yeah your car
@@Chimon4ever please bro you need to upgrade your life

stock altima alt is 120amps i think....i have two amps gonna do 1700 rms to each sub in a sealed Box with a yellow top in the front and a Kenetic 3800 blu in the back what's the deal good or no?
sealed = lame, altima = even lamer.
So if I run 1000-1200 max RMS power on my 130 stock alternator I should be okay??
laramo100 I was fine until I went over 1k watts rms. When you get up to 1400 watts plus. The big 3 and 200 plus amp alternator will work wonders
Just tell people to learn ohms law! Lol
If you want to move hair use a fan, not an audio amplifier.

how much damage to your eardrums are you doing with the hair trick ?
John McCoy zero.. bass doesnt cause hearing damage
2400w RMS CT-SOUNDS amp with a single 12" Sound Qubed and could not do a HAIR TRICK
codylucente gotta have it in a SUV
you dont have to have an SUV, you can do hair tricks in any vehicle. you can do hair tricks with a 21 inch death penalty and a 100 watts rms. its about surface area not watts you chowder head
