This misses a key step. People in China had to AGREE THAT THE SHELLS WERE VALUABLE! Without this piece, a person could trade their cow for shells, and then try to use the shells to buy wheat. But what if the wheat dealer does care for shells. In other words, what if the wheat dealer doesn’t find the shells VALUABLE. Without first collectively establishing that shells have value (which is more or less arbitrary) they cannot be used as currency.
Completely false! Bartering was only introduced in 6000 bc by the Phoenicians who later changed it to gold and precious stones. Prior to the invention of currencies, people were living in tribes and shared everything in a collaborative way. Men would hunt or fish for their community, the elderly would educate the young and the women gather fruit and grains to cook for the community and everyone lived an organic, healthy, and happy life... no private property nor poverty as nature was intended. Humanity's problems started with the creation of money...
Lot of historical errors , early civilizations in the middle east and eastern Europe used coins ! Moreover if not mistaken early forum of bank notes were developed in Petra / Jordan !
What is wrong with you all. Are most of you forgetting one MAJOR FACTOR. Like i don't know "AUTOMATED TECHNOLOGY". Automation is replacing human labor as it always done. Its now possible to remove the need for a MONETARY BASED SYSTEM, BARTER, OR TRADE. Because technology can produce in Abundance faster and create a product of higher Quality. All we truly need is Resources, Automated Production, Distribution Of Those Good, And Recycling. That Exchange of money barter or trade is OUTDATED due to technological advancements.
I'm trying to expand this knowledge I feel like people don't discuss this enough due to being conditioned on "making money" just to live. It has a lot of people blind
Where did the gold go? Isn't that the only thing that gives paper or electronic money hold any actual value? I feel your teachers missed a big part of money creation.
+Left Is Right 2015 In modern times money is more symbolic. Since a large group of people recognize a $5 bill as being worth $5 it's worth $5. If everyone saw it as a piece of paper it would be worth as much as a piece of paper. If all of America saw it as being worth $100 it would be worth $100.I feel like your a dumb fuck. Think god damn it.
I never said anything about gold either. I was just responding to the statement "Where did the gold go? Isn't that the only thing that gives paper or electronic money hold any actual value". I was just telling the guy why paper money is valuable. But to answer your question, have you ever wondered why different races from all around the world found gold to be useful thousands of years ago? Not because other people wanted. It doesn't make sense to look in river steams for months or create massive mines and go into them dangerously to get gold if it's just because you think it would be desirable. Instead the ancients would have just used rocks as gold. The reason gold has value is because of it's lustre and its great malleability and resistance to tarnish. This also makes it enjoyable to work and play with. After they found gold for the first time by accident while taking a bath in a stream they realized it's great property's and went back to look for more. Then they found out that it existed underground and they were willing to risk their lives for it or they got slaves to mine it.
John Undefined gold's unique properties, limited supply made it to be universally used as money or medium of exchange making trade, wars possible. Its ability to make men move gives it it's value.
Left Is Right 2015 Till 1971 us dollar was linked to gold with an exchange rate of 35 USD per ounce. After 1971 president Nixon unpegged gold from USD.now currency has value because we people give value to it.we have agreed to trade goods and services in exchange to this fancy paper which once used to be receipt for that gold.
I still don't understand one thing,if the ban got 10 gold he could just give paper to people with 10s on them and pretend its money and then the guy at the bank could just get away with all the gold?
time. we will pay and be payed 'in time' ;) cuz time is money and atm are money machines, so therefore atm's are time machines and we will be able to travel back in time to buy gold with time and get stuck in the past because then there were no atm's and die with time on hand cuz back then people use gold to trade, not time.... cuz.. time... can't belive you read this :)))
The only problem is that the issue on barter rests on nothing but assumptions. There simply isn't any evidence of this evolution of money to be found. It is rather a ideological projection from our time onto the past. For instance, David Graeber writes in his book 'Debt: the first 5000 years that: "The definitive anthropological work on barter, by Caroline Humphrey, of Cambridge, could not be more definitive in it's conclusions: "No example of a barter economy, pure and simple, has ever been described, let alone the emergence from it of money; all available ethnography suggests that there never has been such a thing."
