I have 4 ficus, a natal plum (Carissa), and a Portulacaria growing in sunny windows. You should get a tree and try it. Just good light and water when a little dry.
The stone is a nice one, reminiscent of an old cliff with all those different levels of erosion. I see more and more natal ficus trees trained as bonsai. I wish I had one too.🙂
@@KleinBonsai Unfortunatelly, I can't find this species in Romania, where I live, so I may have to try growing it from seeds if I can find a good source.
I've always loved root over rock trees and was working on one years ago buy sadly it hit a hard winter and didn't survive - yes, I managed to kill a Ficus :( . So keen to try again as I've learnt a lot from watching your channel. Thank you.
You should definitely try again. I think you'll be able to do it where you are headed (Subtropical vs Subtropical-Mediterranean). People forget that even if we have mild winters, one cold night can weaken or kill a tree, but killing trees are also part of the journey 😅
I would say that Ficuses are the best for root-over-rock, but I know that Trident/Chinese Maples also make very good root-over-rock bonsai. Elms are also good candidates, but I am not too sure about conifers. I have seen some Japanese Pines and Spruces used but yeah generally you want a fast growing species
Junipers are good root over rock bonsai. When you start one cover exposed roots with sphagnum moss until the roots get established in the soil in the pot. Boxwood works too.
Please keep posting!! Ons love jou videos !! Die wereld kort jou in die Bonsai space!!
Baie dankie! Waardeer dit😊 Dit gee my motivering om nuwe videos te maak 💪🌳🌞
I cant have tropical trees and right now all my trees are covered in snow so it is nice to see some videos from other side of world
Where are you from? If you give a ficus enough light it can survive indoors

Hi. What are the best trees for root over rock? Are there any types that don’t work? I imagine coniferous trees wouldn’t take it so well.

How big is that tree from that root cutting now? 😉
That root cutting unfortunately did not grow 😢. But I will definitely try again 😊
I love what you show but is slightly annoyed at the speed.
Was it the pacing? Too fast or too slow?
