I'm. Asked in Zhongshan, Guangdong. But I spend most of my spare time exploring. I work full time at a training center in a mall which gives a decent salary, but limited time to explore. University gig would give more flexibility with time and also a step up for my teaching career.
Nope - my wife's parents paid for the wedding (while borrowing quite a bit) because I paid for our American wedding after saving for a long time. It definitely was not a lavish wedding - if you think so, you've clearly you've never been to a lavish Chinese wedding. Yeah, of course people do private tutoring - why wouldn't you? You get to teach someone and make a bit of money in your free time. Not our university students, of course - why the **** would I want to make that commute or spend more time with them? Nah, other students will pay more for simpler teaching, especially middle school / high school students. No corruption about it. Never assume, onepunchman. It makes you look foolish.
Great video mate, good to see that you enjoy your job in SCU. Good jobs in China for foreigners are really a pain in the ass to come across. I'm lucky enough that I have a job lined up in North-East China for when I graduate from uni here in Ningbo, but searching took me the better part of a year.
You need to get in touch with agents in China, find a Wechat group or smth like that, they will do all the work for you, for FREE...all you have to do is to hit them up and be ready for interviews ;)

Love the layout of the classroom! The seat arrangement, wall colors, board, etc. are not something a typical university in China will take into consideration. But I do believe they help the dynamics in the class. Classrooms need to be designed in a way that encourages instead of inhibiting interaction. .
"telling the same joke for the 18th time..." When I was teaching in LongChang, I taught 14 classes a week. It was the exact same material, 14 times. But, I tried to turn it in to entertainment. I tried to refine and embellish the jokes with each class. By the 10th time, I had teachers that would come in, just to be entertained. Basically, if you don't find some way to make it fun, it can be REALLY draining. Of course, that was a high school, not a university.

So glad to find a vlogger from my home university. 我去年去了美国当交换生，现在回到川大了。 But I guess there is a mistake in the video. Actually only freshman and sophomore students study at jiangan, they will move to wangjiang in their third year. Undergraduates are not required to take oral english class in their last two years. That's why you guys don't teach at wangjiang.
Those classrooms look really nice! I teach at SWUFE Tianfu Campus. I teach 11 classes, each is two periods of 45 minutes. Teaching half of that certainly sounds nice. That said, I really like my job. The English level at the school is pretty low and the administration is nonexistent, but the first problem is a fun challenge and the second may be a blessing in disguise!
Yeah, I really hated teaching at SWUFE (I was at Guanghua and Wenjiang). I'll be making videos talking about each university I've worked at and a ''university vs. training school'' video, since I've now had experiences at both. So I'll finally get to talk about athe crap that happened at SWUFE hahaha
The "Tianfu" Campus has a different administration. It just borrows the SWUFE name for prestige. Our administration here is really not that bad. They don't really interact with us at all. I don't even know who my direct boss is! But, they don't really cause us trouble. We specialize in students with a low gaokao score. They are not the best students, but they are all good kids. I enjoy it here. It is just a lot of work building a curriculum from scratch.

I'd rather live in the city closer to friends and stuff to do. The other campus is basically in another town and right next to the airport....not a fun place to be. Nothing to do :(
Rachael you probably haven't been to China? the level of entertainment a nice Chinese city offers can easily compare to Paris or London... and everything on your fingertips.
I currently work and live in Japan, but the original idea was to work in China but of course something came up and now i work an eikaiwa job. If something like that came up, similar to your situation, i would gladly take it.

Talking about well run English Schools in Chengdu, I have to say EF English First is probably the best one I ever taught at, light years better than any Hagwon I taught at in S. Korea, and I would probably still be there if it weren't for the air pollution and deteriorating health of my parents. But I was teaching 23-25 hours a week, not including other mandatory school activities.
Oh, man....too many hahaha I adapt a few of the British Council's lesson plans sometimes. I also use WeChat and online survey programs. I just find random stuff on the Internet and adapt it. Hey man, care to share the secrets of your syllabus? I'm close to getting a job at a technical university in China but i'm freaking out because I have no idea what I'm supposed to teach there or how big the expectations are for an ESL teacher at a University. I know it's all a laid back type of thing, but you never know. Are there restrictions on the internet side at that level too?
I've just posted a video on my teaching channel that you can check out. Laid back or not depends on the university, as does what you teach. I'd recommend laying out a semester beforehand. Semesters are usually 16 weeks, with 1-2 of those for exams. So, plan 15 lessons just to be safe. Start simple, like introductions, then build up to small talk, talking with foreigners, giving advice/suggestions, descriptions (adjective order) of photos, descriptions of personalities, and stuff like that. It's a top 10 university here in China with a lot of resources, so it's quite well regarded here and has a lot of money. It depends on what you're going to study; some majors are better than others
There are tons of TESOL certificate programs out there, like ITTT, but the thing is - it's not technically up to international standards unless there's a practical component where you teach at least 6 hours of classes with real learners and observe X amount of hours of other teachers. Look for TESOL programs like that or spring the extra cash for a CELTA (I just finished the CELTA and it was wonderful, but tough)
Austin Guidry I'm on my way home after 8 months staying in Australia. Only thing I worry the most is how to get access to UA-cam when I come back to China. Cuz I know they're banning all the vpns recently. It makes me feel so confused. Even if they can't possibly ban all the vpns but how can I find some which are safe to use cuz I'm just confused.
Just get a VPN or two before you come back. Plus, when you come back, and if your VPNs don't work, you can just find a foreigner and ask them what VPN they use
How much do teachers make at Sichuan University for those working hours? Do you need previous university level experience? I study Chinese medicine and want to come to Chengdu for experience in the hospital there and would love some part time work. I taught English for years while living in Thailand but have no university level experience. Thanks
thanks for the quick reply. I taught mostly one-on-one or small groups in Thailand for a few years then taught online for a while. What kind of opportunities would I have in Chengdu if I were looking for part time-work of around 15 hours a week or so while I intern in a hospital? How much could I expect to make hourly? I will be finished with my MA in Chinese medicine in a year or so and will be looking to come to China after that. I have a BA in philosophy and Celta. Thanks again for all the info.
Wow that's pretty awesome! I teach 12-16 hours at a public high school which means I usually only have two 45 minute classes per day and when I am not teaching, I can stay in my apartment. You have it even better! You just have 2 work days and the rest you are off right? So you don't need to be at the school during those days I presume. I am quite satisfied with my job here and I have plenty of free time to do what I want. If I had to stay in the office when I am not teaching, I would quit though hahah. The fact that I have low teaching hours and do not need to stay in the office is extremely beneficial. This is my 3rd year here. I would love to try a new city but I can never find another school with my salary and free time hahah.
no, I live in a really good area in downtown Chengdu - it's not worth moving outside the city where there's nothing to do just to save a bit of time two days a week. I am a ten-minute cycle from the Wangjiang campus of SCU
The campus is beautiful, yeah! I love it, but the area around it isn't so nice. It's really dusty and full of industrial manufacturing. WMs are not 24 hour
True - but not very many of those in China. Family Mart (a convenience store chain) is one of the only non-restaurant businesses that's open 24/7. There are a few things scattered here and there that are open 24/7, but they're super rare
depends on the university....some places just require a bachelor's, some require bachelor's plus certifications, some require master's or even a Ph.D.....but for the majority of universities, a bachelor's + EFL certificate + experience teaching will do it

Sichuan University. Henan doesn't really have any good universities, as far as I'm aware. Henan Polytechnic floats between #160-170, depending on the year, but Sichuan University is in the top 8-12
Although....that is as an overall university. When it comes to engineering specifically, I have to say, I don't know much. According to the polytechnic uni rankings, HPU is around #50, and SCU isn't on the list. If you were going to come to Chengdu, go to 电子科技大学. THAT is one of China's best tech schools! Waaaay better than HPU

That's a really tough question...."comfortably" is a really vague word...but I'd say if you wanted to, if you were single, live "comfortably" in a one-bedroom house, eat out fairly often, and maybe travel a bit, you could live comfortably for.....5,000 - 6,000 yuan a month, I guess. Rent would be maybe 1500-2000, and the rest is just play money. I don't have many expenses besides food and rent, so it's difficult for me to say, but I will address your question in my next Q&A video! :)

You can buy burner SIM cards at seedy shops around train and bus stations - you can use those for data until you get a proper phone plan. Yes, a VPN app is necessary to gain access to those blocked sites
Not every foreign website has been shielded.Some portal sites like yahoo BBC etc , they all available in china， you can reach them without VPN，If you want to reach UA-cam FACEBOOK TWITTER you do need VPN in china . because they'er all banned . But VPN is very easy to get. I thinks it's not a big deal ....There are so many foreigners living in china and so many foreign companies operating in china as well. I work for a US biopharmaceutical company in Shanghai, We can connect to FACEBOOK TWITTER UA-cam all day long without VPN while working in the office space .I reach facebook twitter youtube with VPN at home ....I paied 200RMB for VPN annually , it's very cheap, and there'er some free VPN you can get, but most of time freeVPN is instable ......

@@howiexu9137 That's because your company pays to have access to a VPN on your company's campus. This is quite a common thing at some foreign owned restaurants and bars around China that they offer their foreign customers as a free service.
I can speak Chinese, but it's pretty much never needed. I only use it for jokes in class, really. If I say something they don't understand, I explain using simpler language or visuals like gestures or quick cartoons

I don't think there's a "best," because we all have different kinds of skills and methods of communication....some people just aren't suited to university work and some people just aren't suited to elementary work. Honestly, I don't know if I can really advise you there - it depends on you and what you're comfortable with. I've always been more comfortable at a university because of how much free time I get, among other things
No - the commute is a ten-minute cycle to the main campus, then a 30-minute shuttle to the other campus. So about 40-45 minutes, but then I have to teach eight 45-minute classes on Thursday and six 45-minute classes on Friday
I have a Bachelor's Degree, a TESOL Certificate, and almost five years of experience teaching various academic and ESL subjects. The teachers here come from various academic backgrounds
SCU is a different type of institution from TJFSU - you can't just jump right in there since it's a top university with tons of government funding for research, publishing, and expansion. It's fairly well overseen, for the most part. TJFSU was a low-level language school that didn't have a lot of expenses and isn't really at the forefront of anything. All the teachers have bachelor's and master's degrees and a pretty good amount of teaching experience. SCU's also got its handful of non-white foreign teachers!
In SiChuan University, every newcoming formal teacher must have phd, the lowest requirement. I think you maybe a lecture, now in china many Universities 'd like to hire people to give classes to their student as long as you having professional skill. However in this case you are not a faculty or staff in this University.

Hey man, care to share the secrets of your syllabus? I'm close to getting a job at a technical university in China but i'm freaking out because I have no idea what I'm supposed to teach there or how big the expectations are for an ESL teacher at a University. I know it's all a laid back type of thing, but you never know. Are there restrictions on the internet side at that level too?
I've just posted a video on my teaching channel that you can check out. Laid back or not depends on the university, as does what you teach. I'd recommend laying out a semester beforehand. Semesters are usually 16 weeks, with 1-2 of those for exams. So, plan 15 lessons just to be safe. Start simple, like introductions, then build up to small talk, talking with foreigners, giving advice/suggestions, descriptions (adjective order) of photos, descriptions of personalities, and stuff like that. Simple -> complex is the key. Read "Learning Teaching" by Jim Scrivener. It's a godsend for new teachers.

It's a top 10 university here in China with a lot of resources, so it's quite well regarded here and has a lot of money. It depends on what you're going to study; some majors are better than others

Looks great! How to get the TESOL certificate?
There are tons of TESOL certificate programs out there, like ITTT, but the thing is - it's not technically up to international standards unless there's a practical component where you teach at least 6 hours of classes with real learners and observe X amount of hours of other teachers. Look for TESOL programs like that or spring the extra cash for a CELTA (I just finished the CELTA and it was wonderful, but tough)

VPNs are impossible to totally ban, so it's a non-issue.

Austin Guidry I'm on my way home after 8 months staying in Australia. Only thing I worry the most is how to get access to UA-cam when I come back to China. Cuz I know they're banning all the vpns recently. It makes me feel so confused. Even if they can't possibly ban all the vpns but how can I find some which are safe to use cuz I'm just confused.
Just get a VPN or two before you come back. Plus, when you come back, and if your VPNs don't work, you can just find a foreigner and ask them what VPN they use

How much do teachers make at Sichuan University for those working hours? Do you need previous university level experience? I study Chinese medicine and want to come to Chengdu for experience in the hospital there and would love some part time work. I taught English for years while living in Thailand but have no university level experience.

If you get full bonuses and all that jazz, it works out to around 8500/month before taxes. Yeah, you need a few years of uni experience first
thanks for the quick reply. I taught mostly one-on-one or small groups in Thailand for a few years then taught online for a while. What kind of opportunities would I have in Chengdu if I were looking for part time-work of around 15 hours a week or so while I intern in a hospital? How much could I expect to make hourly? I will be finished with my MA in Chinese medicine in a year or so and will be looking to come to China after that. I have a BA in philosophy and Celta. Thanks again for all the info.

Wow that's pretty awesome! I teach 12-16 hours at a public high school which means I usually only have two 45 minute classes per day and when I am not teaching, I can stay in my apartment. You have it even better! You just have 2 work days and the rest you are off right? So you don't need to be at the school during those days I presume.
I am quite satisfied with my job here and I have plenty of free time to do what I want. If I had to stay in the office when I am not teaching, I would quit though hahah. The fact that I have low teaching hours and do not need to stay in the office is extremely beneficial. This is my 3rd year here. I would love to try a new city but I can never find another school with my salary and free time hahah.

True - but not very many of those in China. Family Mart (a convenience store chain) is one of the only non-restaurant businesses that's open 24/7. There are a few things scattered here and there that are open 24/7, but they're super rare

depends on the university....some places just require a bachelor's, some require bachelor's plus certifications, some require master's or even a Ph.D.....but for the majority of universities, a bachelor's + EFL certificate + experience teaching will do it

For Undergraduate
Sichuan University. Henan doesn't really have any good universities, as far as I'm aware. Henan Polytechnic floats between #160-170, depending on the year, but Sichuan University is in the top 8-12
Although....that is as an overall university. When it comes to engineering specifically, I have to say, I don't know much. According to the polytechnic uni rankings, HPU is around #50, and SCU isn't on the list. If you were going to come to Chengdu, go to 电子科技大学. THAT is one of China's best tech schools! Waaaay better than HPU

What's the lowest cost one could comfortably live off in Sichuan?
That's a really tough question...."comfortably" is a really vague word...but I'd say if you wanted to, if you were single, live "comfortably" in a one-bedroom house, eat out fairly often, and maybe travel a bit, you could live comfortably for.....5,000 - 6,000 yuan a month, I guess. Rent would be maybe 1500-2000, and the rest is just play money. I don't have many expenses besides food and rent, so it's difficult for me to say, but I will address your question in my next Q&A video! :)

Another great vid Austin. Can I ask what it's like for internet in China. Is it possible to buy mobile data cards and how easy is it to access sites like face book and you tube? You can buy burner SIM cards at seedy shops around train and bus stations - you can use those for data until you get a proper phone plan. Yes, a VPN app is necessary to gain access to those blocked sites
Not every foreign website has been shielded.Some portal sites like yahoo BBC etc , they all available in china， you can reach them without VPN，If you want to reach UA-cam FACEBOOK TWITTER you do need VPN in china . because they'er all banned . But VPN is very easy to get. I thinks it's not a big deal ....There are so many foreigners living in china and so many foreign companies operating in china as well. I work for a US biopharmaceutical company in Shanghai, We can connect to FACEBOOK TWITTER UA-cam all day long without VPN while working in the office space .I reach facebook twitter youtube with VPN at home ....I paied 200RMB for VPN annually , it's very cheap, and there'er some free VPN you can get, but most of time freeVPN is instable ......

I don't think there's a "best," because we all have different kinds of skills and methods of communication....some people just aren't suited to university work and some people just aren't suited to elementary work. Honestly, I don't know if I can really advise you there - it depends on you and what you're comfortable with. I've always been more comfortable at a university because of how much free time I get, among other things

You spent more time on your commute than actually teaching?
No - the commute is a ten-minute cycle to the main campus, then a 30-minute shuttle to the other campus. So about 40-45 minutes, but then I have to teach eight 45-minute classes on Thursday and six 45-minute classes on Friday

Do you have a teaching degree?
I have a Bachelor's Degree, a TESOL Certificate, and almost five years of experience teaching various academic and ESL subjects. The teachers here come from various academic backgrounds
SCU is a different type of institution from TJFSU - you can't just jump right in there since it's a top university with tons of government funding for research, publishing, and expansion. It's fairly well overseen, for the most part. TJFSU was a low-level language school that didn't have a lot of expenses and isn't really at the forefront of anything. All the teachers have bachelor's and master's degrees and a pretty good amount of teaching experience. SCU's also got its handful of non-white foreign teachers!

In SiChuan University, every newcoming formal teacher must have phd, the lowest requirement. I think you maybe a lecture, now in china many Universities 'd like to hire people to give classes to their student as long as you having professional skill. However in this case you are not a faculty or staff in this University.
