The Habitat graphics with the animals are by Charlie Harper. just my opinion but it's rather insulting to compare his artwork with element graphics. the Darkroom art is by Don Pendleton, i think his art is incredible, not played out, it holds up. that being said, great content.
Part 3 should def include some more big names like Deathwish, Palace, Polar, Chocolate and Girl and also some OG ones that are still around like World Industries and Birdhouse. It'd even be sick to see what you think think of Supreme decks, and smaller companies like Glue and Picture Show.
from my point of view on hookups, their old graphics that weren't as "in your face" where super cool and especially in the 90s when that stuff was like super taboo. like the old sean cliver stuff that wasnt literal hen tie was sick
Also, when they first came out, anime wasn’t the big huge thing in the west that it is now, so to see these boards with anime drawings on them were pretty rad. Nowadays I doubt anyone wants to be the dude at the skatepark with the Pervy anime graphic
I can appreciate you going over darkroom, I know I suggested that myself. I've been riding them a lot this year because im just stoked on the shape of the 8.38 decks, but I totally understand your opinion on it being a bit stuck in time.
The Powell team is gonna come up really fast filming with Dan Corrigan and nka alot lately and they're team is actually really good with Zack doelling and that mixed dude that goes huge down stairs. And they got that Julian kid and the Japanese kid that does all the bowl mini ramp stuff. I wasn't a fan of them either and have never bought anything from Powell my whole skate life so like 30 years lol. I'll bet they come up big though, just saying. :) 🤷♂️
As a graphic designer and Old School skater, The general rule for SB graphics should be this: 1) Just like logo designs, NO Photos or photographic elements. Vector graphics only, for those familiar with illustrator 2) If it can't be screened it doesn't belong on a board. The ability to print digitally on a heat transfer has ruined the artistic aspect of skateboard designs 3) Nobody wants a board with just your bad logo (exceptions can be made if your logo is good, but it's still boring and not creative). 4) BE CREATIVE! don't just throw a bunch of random shit on a board that doesn't make sense.
This guys opinions are Solely based on whats currently trendy. Im sure hes speaking down on things he would have been into when they were trendy, thats all any of it is. When something different starts to get overplayed or dated is when it becomes cringey.
@ghostdancing I’m not saying you can’t I’m just saying it’s not corny that gx is doing it because nor cal specially SF has a pretty historic psycahdelic culture.
I really miss the old hook-ups days especially in the 90's, there is a one graphic that i really like the most it was realised like 2 years ago and that is the "lum" graphic its an 80s classic anime show from urusei yatsura kinda like this on my profile pic right now
I've always wanted someone to buy out Darkstar, re-brand it and make it a true brutal skateboard company. Center it around shadows and dark tones. Use alot of dark imagery taken from black metal and 18th century art. Creature dances with it but I feel like there is no true dark skate company.
You should do a graphics tier with some legacy companies. Or even a different era like mid 90s tier list. The CCS catalogs are accessible online from that era.
I absolutely agree with what you said about Real haha....the boards skate great and are great quality, but most of their graphics are really plain/lame
it's true, the indy-americana-art brut style has been overused. Also, it's crazy how much David Carson influenced skate graphics.. That's another style that kinda came back but it's nothing new..I agree with a lot of things you say.
Kinda feel bad for skating on my evagelion rei hook ups board. Considering that a lot ppl gonna give me bad looks for having 14 y/o girl as a graphic. Gonna have to retire it…
What do you think of adding small deck companies to your list in part 3? Like companies from europe, asia etc. I got some suggestions to check out: Napalm Custom, Cartel, Happy Hour.
Unpopular opinion, but I think the Darkstar graphics are awesome for the most part, I like fantasy style graphics and think they are executed well. Actually have a few of the better ones, not headache inducing ones lol, as well as a couple of Elements and a Birdhouse, but I like having something that's not the popular choice though and do my own thing so I'm kinda glad they aren't the "cool" choice, so usually prefer the Darkstar. Since when has skateboarding been about what's popular? The (non-walmart) resin decks are actually pretty good quality and a decent price, if anyone was thinking of trying one, just avoid the low end ones aimed at kids I am not sure what the qality of those is like. I can appreciate your opinion on the first decks you showed though, but the Felix decks are actually pretty cool in person as the Tie-Dye isn't overdone like the others they produce. I do find it ironic however how any deck can suddenly become awesome because a certain pro rides it and how good a deck is seems to be solely decided by who is on a brands pro team and what seems to be "cool" in skateboarding these days is following the trend of what everyone else is doing...
Them butterfly graphics and graphics mini logo makes with pictures of real animals make me immediately think "wtf is this Telus mobile skateboards shit" lol
i work at a zumiez (unfortunately there are no local shops in my area) and i swear 98% of the boards we get are unskateable bc they’re either so ugly or played out
okay but dont tell me you wouldnt think that green habitat board looks sick if you saw it with some classic indies and some white bones spfs going kinda yellow because of how old they are
I think dark star is already obscene enough for me to ride ironically. But I don’t think they’re bad enough where anyone else would get the joke. I’m so tempted by the one at 28:09 tho I actually lost my shit when I saw that.
I like the Darkstar pro boards. Steep nose and tail, full concave and stiff. But I think their graphics are batting at a really really low average. I loved the Celtic series though.
The Day With The Homies series that Devonte Jolly puts out got me super into the Illegal Civ team when they were building hype, but yeah, the aesthetic doesn't connect with me, I find Mikey kinda insufferable, and that fucking North Hollywood movie was TERRIBLE.
Subject matter aside,.found it interesting that the hook-ups graphics made the reviwer clutch his pearls and tip toe around showing them online.Yes the subject matter is objectifying and that’s unfortunate. Point is see what censorship does? Don’t be afraid of pissing people off it’s why many of these graphics suck and are boring.
Micky mouse blind reaper looks so jarring especially when pictured directly beside the classic blind reaper logo. Blinds in a weird spot, you can tell theres some inspiration within the graphics to go back to the classic blind design we know and love but they also want to be a walmart friendly brand so the brand is stuck playing tug of war with themselves, like they jump back and fourth between micky mouse reaper and classic reaper. If it were up to me, Id keep the micky mouse extra cartoony grim reaper to the department store completes as its a bit more parent friendly of a graphic design. I think the pro/team deck graphics should stick to only using the classic grim reaper design. I also feel blind is a company that cant be afraid to offend people or push the limits of acceptable graphics... basically blind artist need there edge back! I think such a shift would go a long way to restoring blinds reputation within the skate community.
would love to see you rate some European board brands and how they compare to US brands. (Palace, Sour, Polar, Jart, Poetic collective, Emillion, Antiz etc. )
I feel like you shoul include evisen decks on part 3 they got some super sick graphics (might want to look at the older graphics not a big fan of the new ones)
