The more popular pronunciation is with a hard G (as in Gate, and my way of pronouncing it), but there was never really any consensus on pronunciation. In fact, it should really be jai-ga-watt, if using the root word. The same happened with Gif, which apparently is correctly pronounced Jif. Sorry boring, I just hope my brother doesn't see this.
