- This short picture slideshow, shown at the 2016 Living the Dream Dinner, represents Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston as they changed throughout the years, yet their mission, "to work for unity and reconciliation where there is brokenness, to help people become whole and holy, individually and together," has remained the same.
No external witness, no vocation. The congregation will turn into a memory of good people who once did a great job for the vineyard of the Lord.
I have find memories of the CSJs at St. Joseph's in Medford and Arlington Catholic. I believe some form of habit of witness should be worn. The world hasn't been there same since Sisters lost their habits.
I know the good the Sisters do in the world is the same, but the habit is a visible sign to us laymen and women that there is someone who is living for Christ, someone we can trust, and if need be, go to. In that moment we remember our faith, and rejoice to be Christian and Catholic. The habit is beautiful, and shows us Truth and Beauty. Please bring the habit back. It's hard to describe what seeing you Sisters in the habit means..it's a sweet mystery.

Seems like you would like to go back to the 'good ol' days'. But alas, those days are gone and besides, it's healthier for todays nuns to dress in casual 'ventilated' clothing. Seems like the older living nuns will attest to that. You rarely see any in a habit (except cloistered nuns).
Such a shame that during this presentation....no one sign of any religious habit (veil) on any of those gathered, Thanks for the pics of the "old days", there is nothing more edifying that seeing a religious in their garb. Wise up "modernite nuns"!!
The good news is that these orders are filled with elderly women and are dying off. Traditional habit wearing orders like the Dominicans and the Sisters of Life are thriving with tons of millennials and Gen z.

These sisters need to put their habit on just like the police do one has more. respect for them I love to see a sister in her habit
Many orders would rathe die out than admit that much of which they cast aside was a mistake.
I agree. How can we even tell them apart from ordinary people? They have taken vows and that DOES set them apart. I grew up in Catholic school being taught by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi. We learned to respect anyone with a habit, because of what it represented.
Where do the police wear habits? Never heard of such a thing.

Only in your dreams and long ago memory. That era will never be repeated in these modern days (only in cloistered orders).
The Sisters lost a lot when they decided to no longer wear any type of habit. They were no longer a visible sign of faith to the community.

My two Aunts were: Sister M. Constantine (Sister Agnes Lee & Sister M. Venantius ( Sister Margaret Lee); I loved my Aunts; they were so Special to me! I became a better Reader cause Sister Agnes encouraged me to take Reading Classes at Fontbonne Academy in my Sophomore year at Cathedral High School. My Aunt Peg (Venantius) drove a car; she became a Hair Stylist and even took a Basic Auto Mechanics course! My Aunts were a God’s Gift to me! Thank you to the CSJ Nuns in Boston.
My auntie Sister (now deceased) was very prominent and commanding of respect in her old Order of St. Joseph habit. I never thought the day would come when their order would take on a modern habit with their hair showing and no wimple. She was very pretty in her older age! She kept her religious name to the end.
The religious orders that are flourishing today with new vocations are those that retain the habit. I watched the pretty rapid decline from the late 1960’s following the Vatican II announcements. Regrettably, the nuns took it too far.
Those choosing to wear the full habit are most likely a member of a cloistered order.
The young men and women are not in the 60's and 70's
its over. They do not want to return to the past but want to recover some of the baby thrown out with the bath water. The future of Religious life for Sisters today is with the younger generation living a more traditional classic religious life. These groups are growing all over. It's all a mystery and yet not. Every soldier is proud to wear the uniform . We are sense creatures who have a need for visible signs. We must thank all those women of the past who sacrificed their lives for Jesus. They will receive their reward.
We now look to the future of Religious life with the young men and women seeking a classic religious life and are also a visible sign the world of God's presence.
Thankyou Sisters for everything. I shall never forget my Grammer school years in the 50' and early 60's before all the changes.

I'm a vocation director for a religious order. If someone is joining because of the habit, then their vocation will not last. I admire the sisters who do NOT wear habits.

Sadly to say, the days of the flourishing religious orders is coming down to a mere handful of members and only sustained by many smaller cloisters. This past era will most probably never be repeated and is now just a historical jewel in our memories.

The habit was a witness, a billboard/hoarding proclaiming a message. Nowadays they all look so...butch.
I guess they still proclaiming a message just not the previous one...

I'm a vocation director for a religious order. If someone is joining so that they can wear a habit, that's a huge red flag. I really admire the sisters who do NOT wear habits. Their vocation is purely about their relationship with God and others. Not what they wear.
Well I certainly don’t agree
Yes, what you say is true about them joining to wear the habit. But the habit is an outward sign to all of us who these women are and that they are devoting their lives to the service of God and His people. Outward appearances speak volumes, they speak of belief, of dedication, of a life in-service to God.
Your opinion. It is not catholic faith, it is secularism and by the fruits we see it is a mess.

The habit is merely an external. The religious takes vows, but that does not separate her/him from the rest of humanity. Instead, we are known by our actions. "They will know we are Christians by our love..."
