This game is really confused to both different places right now. Westerners are still discussing about Yasuke's being a samurai or not. Mean while, Japanese ppl claimed that he's not Yasuke since the game seems like it based on Edo era (1603-1868) rather than Sengoku era (1467-1615) which has Yasuke.
Japan, the land of the ninja, has been a dream location for AC fans ever since the series started to do stories beyond eastern European history. As fantastic as the AC games have become the fans continue to live the franchise because it has always done it's best to immerse you into the period and the culture of each game. I believe that a legitimate group of fans are concerned that the issue race, which had never been an issue in AC since they had always made protagonists of the same culture as the setting of the game, will be a major point of the story. I believe the reason fans are upset about Yasuke and not the female protagonist is because the story potential of exploring the period of Japan's warring states as a Japanese woman is incredibly fascinating and is surprisingly unexplored territory, whereas the story potential of the first African man in Japan must always address the issue of his race. I think that trying to write off all criticism as originating from either racism, incel culture or sexism is very elitist and paints the both of you as very out of touch. The Smithsonian recognizes Yasuke as a samurai because the western perspective of Japan is tainted by the concept of bushido, a lie created by an American born Japanese man with no knowledge of Japan in order to sell books. Japan does not recognize Yasuke as a samurai because during the era of the warring states samurai were land owners and vassels to the Shogunate, both are things that Yasuke never had. Yasuke was given a sword, armor and a house thus making him an honorary soldier of Oda Nobunaga however he was never given land or a title. Samurai of that period held a position equivalent to a Baron in service to a traditional European monarchy.

All good points but this whole controversy is too deep. Touching on Braps point on historical fiction. AC has never been point to point accurate. The only thing you can count on being accurate is the time period itself. Ubisoft then, cleverly weaves Assassins, Templar’s and “those that came before” through the time period with good to serviceable writing and I’ve been a fan of it since day 1. Whether Yasuke is a samurai or not (he is) is completely irrelevant in the context of Assassins Creed due to this.
