  • The Lake District has to be one of my favourite mountain biking destinations. It's got everything; natural trails and all weather trail centres, too. In this video I’ll be hitting the trails at Whinlatter Forest near Keswick in Cumbria, where I’ll be riding both the North and the South Loop, and falling off a bit.

    Only just came across this vid. Great real world content and I love the fact you kept the crash in it. We all have them and the scares to prove it and I hate some of these other videos to try to show flawless descents, jumps etc as they are pretty rare (well for me anyway). Going try to get to Winlatter later this year (my first time) but once again great video....thanks

      Thanks, Stephen. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm definitely not immune to an off. The last one was at Glentress and that made the cut too.

      They are. Be careful of you take the black option at the top of the South Loop, though; it can be super slippery in the wet. If you fancy something a little more natural, I can recommend the Borrowdale Bash. It's a great ride which follows the roads and bridleways around Derwent Water. The descent from Watendlath and descent behind Castle Crag are both excellent.

    Best vid I've watched in terms of explaining how all the trails fit together. Hoping to get the hardtail down there in the next few weeks. I'll probably wait until it's dry though!

    Another great video mate. At 12:24 is where I had a massive off and broke my shoulder, tearing my rotator cuffs off my arm. That was a year out of biking dude. Whinlatter and me have yet to reconcile. Perhaps we will one day. Go-Pro mounting wise. Are you chest or helmet mounted?

    • @MeantforDescent
      @MeantforDescent  4 роки тому +1

      Cheers, bonny lad. That does not sound fun, mind. I'm happy to head over for another round if you've got a score to settle, or if you fancy going anywhere else for that matter. With regards to the GoPro, it's helmet mounted. I use a Fox Proframe helmet, which is a well ventilated full face, and I use a 3D printed mount that attaches to the chin bar. I think it's an excellent combo, if not a little warm in the summer. There should be links to both in the description. A wind jacket is also a must.

    • @angeloys
      @angeloys 4 роки тому +1

      @@MeantforDescent I had tried mounting to the side and the top of my full face and I found it really stopped any feeling of speed on the footage. I never tried chin mounting so my reason for asking.
      As you'll know, I won't be back on a MTB for a good year till I get an all clear and no more chemotherapy bud. I'm gonna beat this and take you up on that offer. Suspect I'll need a couple of Kielder or Hamsterley Forrest Blue routes before I try a red again.

    I would love to ride this trail but I'm a little bit concerned about the skinny bridge at 9:52. How thick is it and is there any way of avoiding it. I have done a decent amount of red runs and I have been to whinlatter when I was around 11 but I was just wondering if my little brother who has only ever ridden blue runs would be able to ride this route (he's 13) thanks bud

    • @MeantforDescent
      @MeantforDescent  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Blake. From memory, the bridge isn't that skinny. You could certainly walk it, rolling your bike ahead of you on its rear wheel, but you could miss that section altogether by sticking to the fire road. I think that bit of trail cuts a left hand corner, so you'll be able to ride past the start, make a left turn on the fire road, and arrive at the end of the section.

    One thing about your knee pads mate, they are pretty shitty if they go off so easly on rather small crash. In my opinion, no point to were them at all, or get different one. Great trails and video :)
    Cheers

    • @MeantforDescent
      @MeantforDescent  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, pretty disappointing performance. The padding's pretty bulky and I think that gives it a lot of leverage when it catches on things. I've got some Fox pads, too, and I think they'd probably have done the same. Thinking about running enduro sleeves because they'd be more streamline.

    I enjoy your videos mate, but if you’re happy to receive a bit of constructive criticism then it’s this. Not everyone will enjoy your taste in music, and as a result, maybe if you were to have the music on at a barely audible level, then the people who like it can still hear it, and the rest of us can just enjoy your commentary and the sound of dirt and stones being thrown up from the bike wheel as you’re going along. 👀👍

    • @MeantforDescent
      @MeantforDescent  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your comment, Phil. I try to make my videos to appeal to a broad cross section and I also try to make them stand out a little from the majority of POV centric vlogs. Music is an important element as it helps to structure the edit. I know that not everyone shares the same taste, so I try to use different genres including rock, hip hop, funk, EDM and even the occasional piano solo. When I do edit, I use a technique called audio ducking to reduce the volume of the music and the ambient audio when the voice over begins. I'm not attempting to dismiss you thoughts, they are very valid, but I just want to explain that I am trying to strike a balance and, for the most part, I think it's going alright. I really appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts, too. Thank you. Chris.
