In Northern Illinois we built hard pink insulation "boxes" around the water . One sheet on the bottom, one on each side. Cut sheets to fit on the ends. Duct tape the seams. Add solar powered water heaters.

Morgan, I know I mentioned it a while ago, but have you started training Toby and Aby to seek out the cats on command? Edit: salted water is a cheap method of making homemade ice cream or quick chilling drinks at a party. I'm not surprised it didn't work. You need to find a thermal insulator, something that can hold a temperature well above the 0C point. I don't think there are many options without keeping the water flowing constantly too. Maybe a solar powered pump?
The jug of salt water will freeze at a lower temperature than plain water, releasing heat of fusion as it does so. But it might need several jugs, and a stronger, saturated salt solution in the jugs (perhaps using rock salt for economy) to noticeably retard the freezing cycle, and eventually even this will not prevail when the outdoor temperature highs fall far enough. It seems to me a system of buffering the temperature when at some point during the day it is still above freezing. On a related matter of freezeworthiness, perhaps a drill powered self priming pump, kept indoors at temperatures above freezing between uses, could help suck the hoses completely free from water after each use. Hope Joey gets over his shovelphobia. Interesting that Randy didn't seem to care. Perhaps a less noisy way of breaking and removing the ice might be devised? Something like a net of rope kept beneath the surface and a way to hoist the net above the water trough?
@@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 So there is a product made from beets, IIRC, that they spray on the roads to de-ice. I'm surprised they don't have something edible, even nutritious, that will keep water from freezing.
Our wood boiler is a very popular attraction for our cattle. It took ALOT of cement blocks to ensure they wouldn't get hurt or ruin something. But now they have basically a big brick wall to lay against that's always a few degrees warmer
I put 2/3 c. of dry salt in used, dry water bottles. They float on the water of my barrels of rain water - completely in the open - and the winds move them around. Really makes a difference until the temp. gets really, really cold. Saves me from breaking ice most of the winter.
There's something really pleasing about watching you doing the morning chores, Morgan. Kind of familiar and comforting. Lovely to see Bea taking a treat from your hand. Up here in BC the water REALLY freezes. An old farmer trick is a "heat-sink" using geothermal heat from the earth. You dig down below the frost-line ( up here thats 6 feet) and place a culvert in the ground. At 6 feet the temp is approx 55-60°F. You insulate a box on top and can place a drum and plumb it using an automatic water system (toilet float shut off works fine). As long as the box on top of the culvert is insulated enough the water remains unfrozen. You could place it along the fence line between the girls and boys with an access on each side and you have enough head drinking that you wouldnt have any issues with even a skim of ice. Im not describing it very well here but if you look it up or ask some old-timers you will get a better idea. Much simpler in the end for you and much less mud and mess in the pens around the water hole. I love watching you develop your farm Morgan❤
Hi, we have a fist pond and we do something similiar to the bottle trick you did but we let half of the bottle sticking out (we also use multiple longer skinier bottles). The first 5 years we filled it with 1/3 of non-freeze liquid and 2/3 water and it worked very good, this year we put the filtration sand in but IDK how well that works jet because we didn't have such low temperatures this winter. Hope this helps 😊
BBC news has a piece, also online about Farmer George Ford, from Blagdon, uses two Maremma sheepdogs - Bear and Holly - between August and December to guard his 600 free range turkeys.
You need to disconnect the Y divider on your hydrant. The water needs to run back down inside the hydrant the way it’s supposed to. Then the hydrant should work.
Oooh it looks really cold there, can't imagine living in that kind of climate, lol. Well it looks like the experiment didn't work, I was having a hard time imagining how a bottle filled with salt water would really do much of anything, and we got the answer. Thinking it would be nicer if you shoveled those chunks of ice over the fence instead of where they might step to get a drink, just sayin. Looks like the waterline is still doing its job, let's hope it continues to keep from freezing. Morgan, thanks for taking us along on the morning chores, all is well at Gold Shaw Farm.❤️👍🐓🐄🐶🐱
❤ It's always great to see a GSF video. Vermont is so beautiful in the wintertime with snow on the ground. So nice to see all of the animals, both indoors and outdoors. Thanx, Morgan. ❤
I just saw a video this week that showed digging a hole about 5 feet deep - get below the feeze level. Then drop a large plastic pipe in the hole andinsulate around the pipe with soil and straw. Basically allow the warmer air below the freeze level to rise up to hit the bottom of a water trough. There is more to it than what I wrote but I think you get the idea of using warmth from below the freeze line to keep the water from freezing. Good luck!
🟠 Morgan, watched a vid few days ago that they dug a hole 4 feet deep to get below the frostline, and put a water bowl for the chickens above that. vid title: "Freeze proof chicken waterer with no electric heater and no bill!!!". Since the volume of the cattle trough is much larger than a chicken bowl, Maybe something similar in principle to the hottubs that are heated by stove, where the water circulates automatically from the bottom to a wood-stove heated copper coil, and then back out the top into the tub, but instead bury geothermal loops instead of using a stove. You would only need a small trickle to keep the ice from forming. and hopefully warm enough to keep the entire trough ice free. hopefully.. 🙂 (maybe a separate loop for each side of the trough, or even 3 loops for good measure of heat and motion of water, 2 sides and the middle) - Edit: Also, if there's not enough water flow within the system all by itself, a solar water-pump could make sure the water stays fluid and is not permitted to freeze.
I'm getting 2-6 a day from about 12 laying hens just that time of year. And yes that's with added light. We hd a plus 10 day recently and got 9 though.
If you run some water pipe 10 foot under ground, then back to the surface it might fix the problem of frozen water pipes. It's a more constant temperature down at that depth and usually well above zero. You would need a ditch digger.
I think the issue here is that the periphery of the cattle areas keeps on changing. Morgan buried lots of pipe already to carry water. If the watering troughs stayed in the same place, this would work. But they don't.
The water that freezes releases heat, keeping the rest of the water warmer. So if you want to do the jug technique, you really want the jug to contain water that is *less* salty, so it freezes first.
WATER Issue: the salt, or alcohol in the water only lowers the freezing point of the water. Thermodynamically the salt water jug doesn't make any sense. The water in the jug is the same temp. as the rest of the water in the trough, so it cannot prevent the trough from freezing. The water in the jug doesn't freeze because the salt interferes with ice crystal formation on a molecular level. Not because it is somehow magically "warmer" than the trough water.

This could retard freezing by mixing the water around, but with outdoor temperatures low enough would not prevent an eventual freeze.
For the balls to move around there must be a breeze moving the water first.

Debbie here,,👩🌾. Is that straw or hay you put on the chicken floor?
Straw. Better compost for the garden and more absorbent.
Morgan, do you have a calendar for 2024 yet?
No calendar this year. I was so busy with book stuff that I didn’t have time to tackle.
Wasn't there another cow and calf you were supposed get?
The white cow and calf? He mentioned in a video they were not coming and would not discuss why.
@@user-nm1rv2bh7k I must have missed that one.
