Rajkumar, a 62-year-old diabetic patient, was referred to Dr. Sampath Chandra Prasad Rao for consultation at Bangalore Head & Neck Sciences (BHNS), Bangalore. He complained of headache, nasal blockage, and impending unilateral facial weakness. He was examined at BHNS and after undergoing relevant scans, he was diagnosed with Fungal Skull Base Osteomyelitis. Subsequently scans also revealed that he had developed Mycotic aneurysms of the Petrous Internal Carotid Artery and Middle Cerebral Arteries due to the infection.
Rajkumar then underwent Subtotal Petrosectomy with Blind Sac Closure of the ear and Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). The patient was also simultaneously implanted with OSIA implant for restoration of his lost hearing, in the same sitting. Surgery was successful and the disease was completely cleared despite the surgical challenges. His aneurysms resolved due to the rigorous treatment. Post switch-on of the implant, the patient was thrilled to get his hearing back. He is doing well is on regular follow-up. We at BHNS wish him all the best.
