    Best designed shop-made blast gate I've seen. I'm building duct work from my machines to dust collector, and I intend to make my blast gates by following your design. Well-made video as well---very clear, from layout to demonstration of each step.

    The most intriguing thing I find with people that have skills in woodworking, building things etc. is that it answers questions to "what and why would I use a certain tool to accomplish a specific task?". I think in layers (and that's coming from a Graphic Designer who has a thing for being a handyman) and I like to think as myself a rookie DIY'er. Videos like this allow me to think of things I can do that can take my work to the next level and if I can ever invest in such tools or similar.
    I recently purchased a router and the first thing I thought of is how to hook up my current shop vac to my router. I know there is a way through PVC piping and adapters then the terms Blast Gate comes up, learned about how it directs dust collection flow, real clever idea so then I ended up here! I've subscribed to you a couple months ago, GREAT STUFF!!! on your channel. Many Thanks!. The production of this video was smooth.

    Thanks, this is the first home made video I didn't have to fast forward a bunch of times. Good Job, I'm planning to use rare earth magnets in mine when I finally get around to replacing those cheap plastic ones.

    Good one Andy. I'm also fascinated by your pipe cutting jig and the masterpiece which is your table sled. It looksmore like a musical instrument than a woodworking tool. Congratulations on your first vid. I have liked and subscribed.John from Australia.

    Very neat jig for cutting the PVC pipe on the table saw. That's a nice miter gauge/cross cut sled Andy. Does it work with your new Sawstop?

    Just a suggestion, use your router to cut a lip into the outer flange for the pipe to fit into. This will give you more support for the pipe and a better gluing surface.

    • @GlassImpressions
      @GlassImpressions  9 років тому +1

      2p-10. I used thick formula and the activator. I would not purchase anything thinner than medium. Too runny. Finds your fingers easier haha

  • @ghtrainman
    @ghtrainman 9 років тому

    Andy, I am going to try to build your blast gates - where does one go to buy the ball bearings that you use and the correct springs? I imagine that the drill bit you use is not drilled all the way through the center sliding piece so that the ball bearing sits in a "detent" under the pressure of the spring, correct?

    How well does epoxy hold the pvc to plywood? Looks like a point of failure to me. Does it have some longevity?

    • @malcolmthompson9848

      I think it would be better to recess the PVC by cutting the hole to the outer dia.

    Nice work!! I didn't understand the purpose of the ball bearing and the spring though... can you explain? cheers

    • @andyglass9560
      @andyglass9560 9 років тому +2

      Sig Guy Sig Guy, thank you for watching and commenting. The bearing and spring acts as a detent. Cheap commercially available blast gates can vibrate open and close due to vibration from the duct work or tool. The bearing and spring keeps pressure on the gate and doesn't allow it to open or close without manual movement from the operator. Please let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks again!

    • @sigguy1361
      @sigguy1361 9 років тому

    • @GlassImpressions
      @GlassImpressions  9 років тому

      Jerry,
      what would you like to know? I would be more than happy to provide some info! The spring and ball bearing create a detent that registers in the countersink on the slide. adjusting the pressure of the screw increases the tension of the spring pushing the ball bearing harder into the slide making it register more. or vise versa less.

    what was the spray with the glue?

    • @itsnotlevel2
      @itsnotlevel2 7 років тому

      Its CA glue (super glue), the spray is the activator. Glue....activator on opposite part....put together...instant bond. And I mean instant! The activator stinks really bad so, lots of ventilation. He was spraying it in the wrong place. The glue will dry without the activator but it takes a few min, the activator makes it nearly instant stick. Crazy shit but nice to have in some cases. IMO, its too expensive to use on something like this, wood glue is stronger and cheaper.

      i have to agree about the mirka paper being good as i use it quite a bit but by hand or with an air powered DA sander. these got my attention for the reason they are electric so should make less noise which is a good thing if your using it a lot day in day out

    Looks dangerous leaving that crosscut piece by the spinning blade and no riving knife. If the piece moved just a little more toward the blade, you could have a kickback.

  • @gthoel
    @gthoel 8 років тому

    hey just a few suggestions first of all we don't need to see how you cut everything if you just tell us how or what you did second show your face more its hard to just watch spinning blades and sanders for ten minutesthird and final sell your product and you'll get a lot more views and subscribers I can not emphasize that last one enough it is the most important thing to note ps don't show fancy brand names it bugs some people when you have two thousand dollar saws instead cover them with your logo but don't get me wrong the things you did with your dust collection is really cool
