    The main problem will always be, that you're essentially paying a premium - for a product that was engineered 30 years ago. With Italian premium you at least get top-of-the-line technology so even if they're overpriced you know you do get something extra. With Harley, you are straight up paying more and getting less than what rivals offer. This means that the riding feel is going to be the sole reason for people choosing a Harley, and that isn't a healthy business model.
    I don't mind that their bikes are simple, and the Iron may not be the fastest bike on the block. Heck, those are the reasons it has its charm. But that charm only works if the price is matching. The thought should be "I don't want to pay extra for fancy modern tech and gizmos, and I don't need a crotch rocket, so I'll get a Harley where I can get a simpler bike and save a bit of money". But alas, they charge Euro exclusivity premiums for something that just isn't even close to being worth it.
    HD's premium that avoids all marketing and sales logic, is what's their current downfall, and will stay so if they don't change up their brand in the future. They have exclusivity brand value, but the longer they keep offering less for more, the more they will hurt their own brand value.

      Sporty 1200 owner agrees here, bought it pre-owned for 10k out the door (dealer BS fees included) For the value, sportsters on the secondary are the best. But a brand new 883 off the showroom is NOT worth it. It’s a v6 automatic mustang, sure it looks like it, but is it exactly what you thought of? Do the numbers crunch right in your head. For sport bike guys this is the dead-est horse they beat, but because it’s a easy one. The numbers don’t lie. But what if you didn’t care...and the fun was had anyway?

    • @Slking507
      @Slking507 3 роки тому +12

      $8,500-9,500 for a new 883
      $8,500-9,000 for a Moto Guzzi V7
      $8,000-8,500 Kawasaki Vulcan 900
      $8,000-8,500 for Yamaha Bolt
      $7,500-8,500 Honda Shadow Aero
      There is not much of a premium. All are great beginner bikes. You will be hard pressed to tell me what any of those have that the Sportster does not. Just saying.

      @TheBabyDerp 3 роки тому +3

      @kiki the gerbil I just bought a brand new sportster, I fucking love it. I had tons of metric bikes before trying my first Harley last year. That first Harley was $1500 and cheaper than the other used metrics I had before it. I absolutely love the harsh and old school feel of the Harley sportster. If you can't appreciate it, so be it. I understand appreciate all motorcycles and people's likes. Just because I prefer an old school feel, doesn't make me wrong or inferior. I daily drive a old school classic car, I love old shit. I guess it's just my thing. Harley isn't going anywhere, they are revamping their company. Their main lineup of big v twin bikes has already been revamped and are very modern. The new Milwaukee 8's have ironed out all issues and have become great bikes. The sportster is the only bike lineup left with 80's technology. Again, I love it, but they are likely getting rid of it anyway. I will openly admit I am in a minority niche. When they stop making sportster, I will build a custom motorcycle to my liking. I am weird and have every right to be. As for Harley, go look at the Bronx. The 2021 Harley Bronx is debuting with their new small(er) V twins. very modern compared to the sportster evolution. 4 valves per cylinder. liquid cooled etc. The bronx is a street fighter style bike as well. Rumor has it sportsters will be redesigned with the new 975 and 1275 motors but who knows. It doesn't change the fact some people are weird and like weird things. If that is somehow wrong to you, you can fuck right off.

I love my HD 1200 72, but I’m real about it’s performance shortcomings compared to modern retro bikes, like the Triumph Bonneville. The sportster is nowhere near Harley's problems. Harley's problem is that every time they get on the verge of something good, the cork sniffers get together to put a stop to it. There was no sense in doing away with the V-rods. The V-Rods drew ire from the cork sniffers because it was a liquid cooled beast and was targeted at new riders. The buying process is picck 883/1200/electric then it goes to 100% in-person where someone walks you through what bars, tank size & tank color, fenders, tires and exhaust you want. I feel like the harley dealership experience is really varied. Theres a few good ones but a lot of fucking trash, and I think that's one of harleys big hurdles.
      I just tried to buy a roadster but they were really iffy on offering financing (they just finally approved me yesterday after 16 days, but I already bought a different bike), their registration fees are insane compared to other dealers, so is their freight, shop fees etc....
      So you've got a 1000 dollar premium if you're lucky to live stateside (it gets worse the farther away you go) but then a 600 dollar premium on registration, a 400 dollar premium on freight, a 200 dollar premium on inspection etc... etc... etc...
      Suddenly that 1000 dollar premium is a 3000 dollar premium. Makes it a lot more difficult to justify buying a bike from a dealer that already thinks they're above you and you dont deserve their bike.

I have heard their other locations aren't as bad, but I wouldn't know, If I am traveling to another city to buy a bike, it won't be from them.

    I think a lot of people live in area's motorcycle's cant be riden all year long. During those times, people like me end up just staring at them instead. When it comes to a sportster, its a price range that its not so bad to be setting half a year in a garage, and while looking at it you see little things that you would like to be different. You can make every functioning part on a lathe or mill. I have made all the pegs, handle grips, triple tree, even decided to stretch the frame and put a slight 2 degree rake, installed springer front end. It makes bumpy roads feel like riding on a cloud! very easy to do with this bike, everything is american standard bolts unless aftermarket stuff has been installed.
    Every winter i customize something else. I go to the steal and aluminum recycling place for material. So when people say harleys are expensive they lack imagination and metal working knowledge. Its never broken down on me and its 21 years old, so you get what you pay for! As long as you maintain it! If your into metal working and want an endless metal working project, a sportster is the way to go. Look on the internet at all the imagination people have with these bikes! Very entertaining! I never get bored of mine, especially when i pull in somewhere and everybody in the whole place stops to stare at my bike and ask me about it. Its just a sportster i say lol!

Wanted an Indian Scout sixty but found out about their poor customer service and the fact the closest dealer is a long drive from here (the closest Harley dealer is 10 minutes away). Plus found my Iron for dirt cheap. I like my bike. Is it fast? No. But I didn’t buy it for speed. If I want it faster that’s not hard to do. It can grow with me as I become a better rider. I can ride all day without my butt hurting (my hands are different story, but there are solutions for that). It’s a great entry bike and a blank slate for whatever you want, plus since it’s a Harley, you automatically are part of a huge community and dozens of clubs. I don’t know of any clubs or communities for really any other bike brand and I’ve been around motorcycles my whole life and know plenty of people with other bikes. Most are apart of Harley dominated clubs even though they own Japanese and European brands. I’ve also never heard anyone put them down beyond a little ribbing once in a blue moon. One motorcycle club in my area is 120 years old and is mostly Harleys and always have been, but they let in anyone with a bike. With a phone call I can get advice from 100 different people who have either the knowledge and/or the parts for whatever I need if it has involves a Harley.

      I have a buddy that did the same. Had sport bikes and now has a sportster. I'm not a fan of that bike personally, and I rag on HD, because I have the opportunity to ride ALOT of bikes and compare them. and HD have alot of duds IMO. But some are nice bikes, like my dad's old lowrider, and road King.

      Same here, still love sport bikes and nakeds but I recently got my first HD, a dyna, and I’m obsessed with it. It’s not a perfect utilitarian bike but man it turns heads. I understand the arguments people make against HD because I said the same things but once I swung a leg over a couple and found that there is a younger crowd out there hooning around on them, I was sold. Are they performance driven machines? No but they’re still a ton of fun to ride. Are they a good bargain? Definitely not but with American labor costs you’re not going to see budget prices. I always said if I ever owned a cruiser it would be an HD because of their looks and their “character”. To me metric cruisers really are too polished. That may sound ridiculous to most but you said it perfectly “it’s either you get it or you don’t”.

      Devon Nobles yes the EVO engine delivers its power in a specific way, low grunt, long gearing, very different feeling from the rest of the market. It can be enough to justify the cult. They don’t vibrate when rolling, this one needs the rubber silent blocks to be replaced, normal maintenance

    I was looking at a 2016 1200 Sportster.
    I bought a 1983 Suzuki GS750T instead. (Black and red paint job)
    The 2016 didn't have a gas gauge, tach, or gear indicator, and scraped pegs on almost every corner. It had fuel injection and adjustable rear shocks though.
    The 1983 Suzuki was half the displacement, carbureted, made 10-12 more horsepower, has a gear indicator, tach,gas gauge, adjustable rear shocks, fires up every time, is lighter, and was literally 1/5 the price.
    And it's actually a head turner because that specific year was made to look like a Triumph, and its funny when people see it's a '83 Zuki
