  • This was an awesome metal detecting adventure where I discover an abandoned mine and metal detect some mysterious rocks that contain a cool dense metal. I also discover some very beautiful mineral specimens and collect up a bunch of them for my collection. Please don't forget to like and subscribe!

what you have there is two minerals, Azurite(blue/purple) and Malachite(green). both are copper bearing minerals and frequently found together and with gold. Azurite is unstable in the open air and weathers into Malachite.

Many of those desert mines in southwest are 1,000 feet straight down. They are everywhere, and not necessarily fenced off. Dirt bikers are known to disappear in them.

One thing you mentioned about keeping your gold find quiet. that is exactly what happened in California. Sutter was not first to find gold. First gold found in California was found before Sutter. In southern California. NOrth Los Angles county Plascerita Canyon. That is the actual first discover they kept it quiet .And Sutter Announced his find to the world.!!

You will find a lot of gold test shafts/adits that go in 10 or 12 ft and just stop. A lot of times a quartz vein will leach the first several feet of its mineral content out in to the environment over the millennia. If the old times saw an promising vein and found any gold at all in it, they would blast/dig 10-12 ft in to get a sample where some times it got a lot richer.

please make sure that the bright blue green rx frags that you brought home are not radioactive. I have brought home blue green rocks from Arizona that "pegged the meter". Of course, yours might just be non-radioactive copper ore. …thanks for the video. Geologyjohn

Have you ever scraped two quartz rocks across each other in the dark? The flashes are sparks from the piezoelectric effect. That is what causes gold deposits in quartz. Stresses in the rock causes an electric field and the gold deposits in cracks. It’s basically electrolysis of gold salts in water.

another way to possibly tell iron pyrite from gold is that iron pyrite often has angular fracture planes, whereas gold is globular.

I found an old copper mine like that up around wickenburg. I was metal detecting too. All I found was a half an old mule shoe. Being a blacksmith, I forget-welded that piece of wrought iron to a piece of buckboard seat spring and made a pattern welded knife that I sold for 8 hundred bucks. I guess I did get some good from that trip after all. Good luck and for gods sake, stay away from the cactus . The rattlers are fine but the cactus wants your blood.

At 6:24 The reasons the top of that cactus is missing it’s because it was shot off by someone. It took an AK rifle with a lot of ammunition to do it but some people have nothing better to do. There is really nothing else that could have caused that.

That beautiful is the leftovers of copper that’s morphed into chrysocolla. If there’s metal, it might be copper, silver, gold, or iron pyrite. I’ve found magnetite and galena with it as well.
Hey, is there an email to which I can send some photos? I was staying at an rv park which must have been on an old range or battlefield from the years of Indian wars, Poncho Villa, maybe civil war? I just don’t know. There were pieces of exploded cannon balls, solid balls at 1 and 2 pounds. Lots and lots of grape shot, too. Then there’s some old shell casings and fired bullets with rings. I split the cashe up into four parts giving the largest part to the owners, two parts to history buff adult children who’ve told me nothing, and a small bit for myself. There were hundreds of pieces, but my curiosity is still peeked by what looks like a plug. Possibly, these plugs of various sizes were for hollow balls filled with the grape shot or schrapnel and powder. These iron pieces were almost all found in/on desert sand and were found with very little rust on them. This place is near a spot where you’ve spent time camping out in NM. They may give permission to go in with metal detectors. I know when I lived there, I was allowed to do almost anything including using my metal detector.
Oh, yes, I found metal military buttons, too!

There’s a lot of cavalry artifacts in that area! Gold as well! Be good to check the areas with dark red or brown iron deposits! Usually gold in those! You can use portable equipment that you have to remove at the end of the day unless you camp there! For longer term file a claim! It’s easy to do!

That copper ore has many precious metals in it. Gold that has been dissolved and redistributed in solution form into ore rocks doesn't always have a gold color. Ores with reds, yellows and even blacks can be rich in gold. Color isn't always the best way to determine rich deposits. Some of the richest deposits are ugly looking minerals like that. But on the microscopic level they are loaded with fine and possibly oxidized gold

That disturbed area at 6:05 looks like it was disturbed by ants. You can even see a couple of holes going down into the dirt. Welcome to the west we have that species of ant out here and be careful about standing on one of those mounds without realizing it talking to somebody the next thing you’ll know is they start biting the heck out of you up in the crotch area. The next thing you know is you’ll have your pants down around your ankles trying to get those things off of you. They really know how to bite.
