Although I trained in some striking arts many years ago, I'm a BJJ practitioner these days. I have really enjoyed all your videos and particularly those like this where you show grappling, throws and takedowns. It seems to me from browsing UA-cam that more and more arts seen as predominately striking arts have discovered (or are rediscovering) the grappling close-up side of combat. I suspect that MMA/the UFC/BJJ have brought attention back to that side of fighting and it's good to see various karate teachers presenting those aspects of karate to students who may well be ignorant of the fact that karate has grappling.
I was very fortunate to find a very decicated Okinawan Goju Ryu dojo with a renowned lineage. Coming from modern sports Karate, it changed my outlook on the art quite a bit. Always training Kata with a purpose and practicing applying the Bunkai just expands your understanding of Karate so much. Everything ties into infighting, clinching and throwing all the time. Combined with the strong focus on body conditioning and self defense mindset, it makes for a holistic fighting method. If the widespread Karate stayed more like this, people would have an entirely different idea of what it is.
Jesse sensei, great seminar! Loved your application for the opening of Empi at 8:12. So simple, so effective. Also agree with your approach of how making karate your way of life. I think that also self restraint and control we learn as karateka may help us not get into a fight unless you're in an unavoidable self defense situation; 4 days ago, near midnight, I kindly asked a group of young guys in our neighborhood to put down the loud music they were playing... They where probably after a few drinks, and they stopped only aftet another neighbor called the police. They met me downstairs afterwards, (I was waiting for my wife and girls), and began shouting at me in a very aggressive way. I spoke them back in an assertive but calm way, showing no fear but not provoking them. Finally, the just drove away. I believe that my training in karate helped me to manage the situation in the best way. Thanks again for your great tips!
"What is practical karate to you?" I really like what Iain Abernethy says about martial arts: it must be life preserving (self-defense) and life enhancing. That pretty much sums up what I believe is practical karate, or in my case practical taekwondo. Awesome video Jesse.
Just ordered a new GI. Thank you for your channel. I have been in a rut and have been thinking about competing again. You just made up my mind. I appreciate it.
4:22 : the trapping hands! That´s Wing Chun Chi Sao. I love the chinese "touch" in the "old" Okinawan Karate. That is so much more than the "new" Point-fight-Karate. Great combination between hard and soft techniques. On the top of the mountain, everything is getting similar... Great seminar!
Jesse, I have to say, excellent video! Your training style is amazing! My wife and I have just started a Shotokan journey together, and this video was very inspiring! Thank you!! From one MA nerd to The Karate Nerd... Thank you!!
Karate is fun and simple that's why sensei Jesse gets into different country because of his hard work and you will too if you believe your self!!!!! #stand tall karate nerds
I recall a reading an article on your website about practing karate philosophy in real life by giving respect and treating people how you'd want them to treat you, surrounding oneself with good people, staying away from shady places and not having a 'victim' -like attitude. That's what I think is what karate is about. Doing things and having an attitude which commands respect from others and not using the skills obtained to command fear because often people confuse respect with fear and intimidation. That's what my parents, my sensei and that article taught me.😁. Btw: that was an awesome video👍🏽😊
Oh my god I had no Idea. I had taken up Karate in my childhood and always wondered what the practical application was for Katas. I always thought they were more for demonstration of skill level. Now I want to review my old Katas!
Best explanation I've ever seen from you sensei jesse I wish could attend to your seminars but I can't because I'm so very far from your country by the way I'm a karate practitioner here in the Philippines and I'm very inspired from all your videos
Oss sensei. Oh my godddd. Sensei I love grappling and throwing but in sports karate we are not taught to do it. But i learned it in kudo. But sensei is awesome. He teach so well. Oss sensei 😊😊
I liked that you spoke for five hours with Sensei Patrick McCarthy about philosophy and story of karate. Because in this way you can show and let know to all the world what karate really is. And, mostly, i liked your conception of ''practical Karate''. I hope one day can take part to one of your seminars. OSU
8 virtues of the bushido: Justice, Courage, Compassion, Respect, Integrity, Honor, Loyalty and Self-Control. Follow these and you will probably never have to defend yourself.
Hello Jesse sensei once again, another amazing karate video, i loved the bunkai and kata explanations! I didn't know that you also did private seminars, this is something I would love for you to do with my dojo, I'm sure my dojo would love to host a seminar for you aswell!
Jesse Enkamp thank you.... I was going to ask you something, in the class I am attending I expected more adults... A few senior guys are old like me .. Lol, but the rest are teenager age and lower. Is mixed age groups a normal thing? I guess when I studied tai chi it was more for adults
Correct. But kids usually have their own classes. Or at the very least, they are separated during class. Age-specific training is essential for an optimal learning environment. Naturally, it depends on the capacity of the dojo.
Wish my club would book you for a seminar- you're so talented at karate, teaching and of course youtube! Really great video, educational and funny. Well done and thanks for making the content you do for all the karate-kas in the world!
Jesse could you please do more video about grappling in karate? Thanks! You are the best I love your video (I hope that you will día video with Lyoto machida or an interview to the machida family , it would be amazing!)
The gedan barrai takedown was awesome. Another proof that forms in kata have more than one meaning. Have you ever seen the bunkai for age uke where it can be used in ne waza for escaping your oponents mount? Cheers Jesse.
also, many of the throws you showed are in sumo... the one where you lift from the hip and then sweep is called imaigeri i think... and i dont remember the name of it but the one where you place your hand on their thigh and pull with the other arm is also a common throw in sumo
Amazing Vlog, you're keep inspiring me and my students, hope to see you again soon, the final words, about practical Karate , were fantastic. Waiting for KNX18
question: what influence did fujika seiko have on karate? I know.. I butchered his name... my bad... but I do have to say watching these post are bring back memories form training under my uncle when I was a kid.
By the way (and it's totally fine if you don't because your channel is brilliant anyway), the downwards block application you showed seems to have a lot of different applications. Could you do a video or two on the different applications of blocks besides blocks? It'd be very interesting how you interpret the basic movements
Hi Jesse, I am watching this in 2021 and got interested with what is the relation between karate throws and jiujitsu throws? I have practiced judo during my younger yaers and I do recognize some of the moves that you teach. From my perspective, these throws came from jiujitsu which later became judo. Do you think there is a connection that the okinawans have also adopted jiujitsu in karate?
For me respect is the most practical part ok Karate. Respect can take you places. Disrespect can’t take you anywhere. Also if we’re talking about the physical aspect of Karate, I would say that the basic blocks and attacks are probably the most practical in most self defense situations. I had to practice these till it became second nature and then more. Still, if you respect everyone I think the most you’d have to use are the basic blocks and attacks. I’m sure it’s different for everyone but for me this is what’s most practical.
Jesse Enkamp have recently started taking a hybrid japanese martial art that includes, strikes, joint locks, takedowns, throws and grappling. My teacher calls is "Maolin Okinawa-Te" is this basically just what you refer to as old school Okinawan Karate?
Hi, I'm new to your page and loving every video. I was wondering how to find information about your seminars, like time, when, where and price. I would really appreciate your help.
Damn! I wish I'd known you were coming over here. Galway's only a couple of hours down the road from me. Ah well... maybe my dojo can club together with some others and get you over again :)
I think it would interesting seeing you do this but with a wrestler's, judoka's, or sambist imput as given their heavy throwing background, could maybe get more ideas out of them and improve on what you have
😂 At 2:45, they're using a design from the old "karate for kids" program. The image of the instructor in the center was based off my instructor, Master Stewart. What a small world!
I train in both Karate and BJJ and see a lot of Jiu-jitsu moves in Kata. Original Karate had to be much more than striking although today most people treat it like Japanese kickboxing with some cool dance routines.
Thanks a lot for very informative videos, but am very much afraid of pain when hit one time at the chest just above my solar plexus. It was unbearable pain that I quit sparring from then on till now. PHILIPPINES.
Great Seminar... Id like you to come to Panama for a Seminar one day. Hope we can make it work. I also like to participate in one of the Karate Nerd Seminars when i have the opportunity. Yes im agree with your last statement, when in the office someone ask me " Have you ever used your Karate in a real life scenario?!" i answer " Yes, everyday, because i have to practice the virtue of Patience with you guys. LOL"
BIG thanks for your nice comments! 🙌 You can learn more awesome Karate stuff on my website: www.karatebyjesse.com 😄
Thanks for the info 😊
I'll pay your site a visit 🙏
Can you do a vidéo that you teach us to use the bo thx

Good observation! Agreed 👍 Thanks for chiming in 😄
Karate always had grappling it's just there is so much attention on sports

I never knew karate had take-downs or throws. When I took classes, it was purely striking.
Just like judo has nawaza ground grappling
I love that you dont fight for fame . And fight for pride

So brilliant and inspiring. It's not only about fighting but also about the truth of karate spirit. Fantastic.
that subtitle from 3:22.. so much care to detail for the viewers. Just awesome! Thanks for the video Jesse!
The smallest things makes the biggest difference! 🙏
@@KARATEbyJesse I truly believe in that! Osu!!
great video Jesse. another reason why original karate is special.
Thank you Jesse respect and good manners go a long way.

Excelent final message of all, my respect Enkamp Sensei

I've recently been getting into karate and I'm loving it a lot. You're one of the reasons that encouraged me to start. :)

I’ve done plenty on Karate Nerd Insider
Jesse Enkamp oh ok thank you sensei
All the info in the video was very important, but your concluding message was inspired.
Oh my god I had no Idea. I had taken up Karate in my childhood and always wondered what the practical application was for Katas. I always thought they were more for demonstration of skill level. Now I want to review my old Katas!
Love the philosophy behind practical karate. Stay awesome Jessie.. osu!

Makoto from sf3 does these throw downs instead actual throws. Reminds me of when I did Kajukenbo.
That was great. Thank you very much.

It is always better to have a small group in a seminar.
The less people the more they are able to learn 😁
Hey Jesse! I think on day you should make a video about shito-ryu karate
Like always....amazing Stuff!!!! thank you!😊
