My Morning Jacket + Calexico cover version of this in “I’m Not There” absolutely floored me. One of the few (or many) times someone takes a Dylan song to new heights
@@mikefelix6338 I just wanted to show some gratitude for you mentioning *_My Morning Jacket._* I firmly believe that _’Z’_ might be the Greatest “Rock Album” of the Century… _And,_ that _’Okonokos’_ might be the Best Live Album. Not to mention the fact that _’It Still Moves’_ and _’At Dawn’_ are also two of the Best Albums of the Decade.
I may agree, this song deserved more attention from Bob, but he had too many. A proper studio version or some soaring live versions would be amazing. The MMJ+C version has an ethereal quality
Where it was "recorded" was in The Basement, terrible acoustics and an ordinary tape recorder used with no consideration as to placement of microphones etc, the songs were never considered as other than a rough demo at best.
Saw him play live in Massachusetts when I was at the ripe age of twenty two. I believe when I saw him live my mouth dropped open and I thought I was in another dimension. His songwriting and music can almost transform a moment. I wonder if I’m the only one who feels I’m in another world when listening to the Basement Tapes. It’s always a new experience every listen to this record. It’s brilliantly crafted and timeless.
I like the fact that the songs are raw and not perfected. You really feel like your time traveling to the basement in the Catskills in 1967. More than anything else, the shear joy and fun they're having is impossible to miss. Other bands have a huge budget, wonderful studios, endless takes, and they still can't equal this.
Love you Bob...and The Band. This is the best album from the 60s. I've heard a lot from this era, from all the greats, and they all have their significance, but this album is in a complete world of it's own. Some of the most well written songs and lyrics I've ever heard.
@@pizzatimeking4379it was music written in the 60s right after Dylan had the motorcycle accident. Only a few songs by just the Band alone in the record were made during the 70s
He and Hendrix were very similar with those crazy rhythms. You can hear it in this track. If you told someone Jimi played the track for Bob to someone who didn't know you could definitely fool them.
I'm going down to Rose Marie's She never does me wrong She puts it to me plain as day And gives it to me for a song It's a wicked life, but what the hell Everybody's got to eat And I'm just the same as anyone else When it comes to scratching for my meat Goin' to Acapulco Goin' on the run Goin' down to see soft gut Goin' to have some fun Yeah Goin' to have some fun Now, whenever I get up And can't find what I need I just make it down to Rose Marie's And get something quick to eat It's not a bad way to make a living And I ain't complainin' none Oh, I can pull my plum, and drink my rum And then go on home and have my fun Goin' to Acapulco Goin' on the run Goin' down to see soft gut Goin' to have some fun Yeah Goin' to have some fun Now if someone offers me a joke I just say, "No thanks" I try to tell it like it is And keep away from pranks Now every time you know when the well breaks down I just go pump on it some Rose Marie, she likes to go to big places And just set there waitin' for me to come Goin' to Acapulco Goin' on the run Goin' down to see soft gut Goin' to have some fun Yeah Goin' to have some fun
So for the past 5 years you could only get certain songs as a premium member on YT, as you might well know. Well when the Dylan flood began about 2 years ago, i got a premium membership just to play this gem as loud as my AR-3's could handle for about a fortnight or until the shrill of Danko, Dylan, and Richard harmonizing had the neighborhood cat population on my fence! Oh to have been at the foot of the steps leading down to Big Pink's Basement, truly magic meets talent and God like. Wait that's not enough credit....Dylan like, Now off to "blow my plum and drink my rum, and then go on home and have my fun"....
The most hauntingly beautiful song ever written about a prostitute. Different interpretations have been offered, but I think the songs conveys the feeling of getting away from life and enjoying your favorite guilty pleasure, judgement free, and Dylan expresses this by visiting Rose Marie, drinking his rum, and having his fun. I imagine Rose Marie is the most beautiful mistress in all of Mexico.
One master piece again ❤ great album historie one of my favorite clothes line saga Bob in he sarkastisk way the nabor are this clothes yours some of it not all of it
No need to overanalyze this. It was a rehearsal tape, and they banged it out quickly with Bob never expecting it to become public. Whatever, any composer who can write, "It's a wicked life, but what the hell?" is freaking brilliant.
Now if someone offers me a joke I just say, "No thanks" I try to tell it like it is And keep away from pranks Now every time you know when the well breaks down I just go pump on it some Rose Marie, she likes to go to big places And just set there waitin' for me to come
I try and speak carefully and clean as you understands what has begin happening. Bless to you and joke telling because we are all like that. You are right I never know you. I was mistaken so how. You deserve fun I deserve life. I work on its. I try and help bit I was mistaken. I can choose to go where I like. Not your choice. I been careful and my own business ringing in my head and heart clean once.
I am sitting in my car in the border town of Calexico whilst listening to this dreamy ballad. Why? In honor of the band by the same name who appear in I'M NOT THERE. I like their version better. Why? Because they jettisoned the keyboard, added horns and gave the drums a stronger presence. Okay?
The version on Vol. 11 of the Official Bootleg Series is better, 'The Basement Tapes Complete'. Also, I think the version on 'I'm on Not There' is better.

such a special song for us bums who cudda been somebody
you'll get there
Bob Dylan is one of a handful of singers (Ray Charles and Roy Orbison) that I've heard in person who transcends the material. Dylan can flat out sing.
What a voice at this time !! Still one of my favorites !!
Such a mysterious sound on this. It is music remembered from some dream surely.
im glad other people hear that too
no i definitely dream about this song you are SO right
perfect way to describe it
Exactly! Thank you!

For as long as I live:
I will gladly debate anyone who says that Dylan is _not_ one of the Greatest Vocalists of All Time.
Amen. This is an amazing performance.
Up to '75 yeah. Since then, it has been increasingly downhill and now it is excruciating.
@@jimbobt1 You're not actually listening to him.

This is such a spiritual song at its heart in such a mundane and heartful way.
Probably my favorite of his. It does something in my heart.
I love that picture
This is an incredible song, and Dylan's vocals here are amazing.
Robbie's guitar work is outstanding.
As is Garth's organ accoutrement.
And the harmonies, one of Dylans best vocals imo
My 3 sentiments, exactly.
I'll tell him you said so.

Thanks for posting the lyric
It's not 'pull my plum' it's 'blow my plume'
Such a very, very, very fine old song ... Thnx so mch 4 sharing ...
Has always reminded me a bit of 'I dreamed I saw St. Augustine' (which in itself is reminiscent of 'Joe Hill'...). Good that I love all three...😉
Yes. All great songs.
Great organ and guitar.
Never noticed that...true, like a "soul" version of the above!
What a masterpiece. Only people with a broken well would dislike this song

dammit sam...the new term is "sex worker". get with the times ; )
Beautiful song
I think Bob didn't leave any kind of issue to put in his songs... The more simple theme become great with his magic words.
Bob!!!!!!
Eterno Dylan
Beautifull song
Ecstatic Heartbreak transcendant of sorrowful joy, I think describes his tone.
Didn't knew Jim James was basically covering the song. Amazing
Un chef d'oeuvre de l'ombre...
Acá yo llamo hermano a Dylan y a The Band, aquí es eterno el sonido, la lírica, todo, todo, todo y nosotros.
