Because nobody else didn't, l tell (again 😅) the backstory of this wonderful melancholic song. Zacharias Topelius (a Swedish speaking Finnish poet, writer, scholar etc.) wrote it to honor his one year old son Rafael's sudden death. The "sparrow" in the song is the spirit of the boy coming from the Land of Angels, to whom his sister ("the girl") gives the seed. Very touching. I can't sing or hear this without tears 😭. This performance is beyond excellent. Merry Christmas to all from Finland! ⛄🎅🎄
Sparrow on a Christmas morning was originally a poem written by a writer called Zacharis Topelius in the late 1800s after the death of his young son. It's nowadays the most beloved Christmas song in all of Finland, and gets voted the most beautiful year after year.
He actually lost 4 children, one stillborn and all before the age of 3. Simeon and Rafael were the names I think of the boys, maybe Rafael was the one referred to here, as your brother who died last spring. Names of angels, nonetheless
I am from Slovakia. I moved to Northern Finland something over 3 years ago. I love raskasta joulua and seen them live already four times. In 2019, I played two gigs in a row over 600km north of Helsinki. Then, early morning, I took a plane to Helsinki, had a little bit of rest at friends' and headed to Hartwall arena. And attended this concert. After it, I felt like my legs don't work anymore. But it was all worth it. This was one of the most magical experiences, seeing this concert.
I love this version of the old song. I listen to it every winter, as do many other Finns. Finnish Christmas is, in general, a quite melancholic one. We visit graves; remember the dead relatives; and so on. Christmas is about calming down.
Yes, this was beautiful. I saw it live in Helsinki last year. Actually that man who played the solo is the guy who came up w this Heavy Christmas- concept, Erkka Korhonen. They started in 2004 in small clubs only few shows per year. I found them in 2008 and seeing them live is now my holiday starter. Been there in the crowd for 11 yrs now. Nowadays in huge arenas. Originally there were only male singers but then when things began to grow and more n more audience found them a few metalgirls have joined the gang. I've seen Elize Ryd, Floor Jansen and Tarja Turunen on board. Tommy Karevik, Joe Lynn Turner, Dee Snider and Bernie Shaw have also made their appearance in the line up. But it is the finest singers of finnish metal scene that brought me to their shows in the first place. So shout out to Marko Hietala, Tony Kakko, Jarkko Ahola, JP Leppäluoto, Pasi Rantanen, Ilja Jalkanen, Ari Koivunen, Kimmo Blom, Ville Tuomi, Antony Parviainen, Tuple Salmela, Antti Railio. The band is drummer Mirka Rantanen, bass Erkki Silvennoinen, keys Vili Ollila and the two guitarheros are Erkka Korhonen and Tuomas Wäinölä.
So wonderfu to see how other cultures celebrate with their unique traditions. You can really feel how the Finnish soul is full of sorrow and sadness and yet they are able to find joy in it as well.
Holy cow. Trinx, you knocked the ball clear out of the park with this selection. Absolutely breathtaking. I *adore* the Raskasta Joulua songs, and although neither I, nor my fiancee understand Finnish, their performances have become an annual staple in our house, *especially* during the holidays. This, though? Un-fucking-believable. The combination of Marko's voice and his wiry, contorted body language with the instrumentation gives me such an overwhelming sense of tension, dread, darkness; all of the things that makes Winter a force to be reckoned with. I looked up the history of the song, and the poem that originated it, and I am just fucking blown away. It's easily been 30 minutes since I listened to this for the first time, and I'm having a devil of a time shaking the feelings this performance gives me. Chase, thank you for selecting this song, it's going on my Playlist *immediately*. Additionally, I have to tell you, I about fell out of my chair laughing from the "Santa Pause" pun. Great job, excellent reaction, short and sweet video. Looking forward to seeing your next video tomorrow morning!
Here's playlist of songs they've done in English: ua-cam.com/video/eZDOxHUAvUA/v-deo.html And some of those Finnish ones with English subtitles ua-cam.com/video/XcbbDR2oxgI/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/YXtQ72YbfDA/v-deo.html
Your reaction was an exquisite treat for us Finns. An old beautiful song with a heavier vibe has now reached a whole new audience. Thank you and have a damn good Christmas.
I've been sharing the previous recording on my FB page every Christmas for few years now and finally everyone on youtube is noticing. With little help from new recording with english subtitles. 😁
Heavy Christmas Tour took in every city the local childrens choir to accompanying them on the stage. In Oulu where I was, there were some pretty excited and happy parents in the audience too. Nice move from the tour organiser. Merry Christmas to you Chase and to your family 🥰
You know, I’ve been watching this song a few times today, I don’t speak Finnish, but it gets to me every time😢 I wish everybody a happy Christmas 🎄spend with loved ones (and a bit of nightwish 😉) greetings from the Netherlands ❤️
I wonder how many careers in music will have been inspired among those children getting to share the stage with such a legend as Marko? Shoutout to the organisers for including all those children! Thank you Trinx and Chase for airing it! And have a damn good Christmas!
Oh man, I'm so happy you picked this. I dont speak a word of Finnish but since I've discovered this song, it still brings tears to my eyes everytime ! I didnt know that "official" version though, I only knew the one filmed from the crowd where the whole audience sings.
And as you can see - the kids know the words from their heart. This nation is quite melancholic... Erkka (the guitarist) was the original inventor of this "Raskasta Joulua" tour... Just 15 yrs ago 😇
I might be wrong, but this is a song about siblings,a brother died, but came back as a sparrow,to be held once again, and then go to heaven...We are not so cheerful in Finland...
This is one of the best christmas songs ever created. When I was doing my military serveice our 20 guys unit had spent almost 3 weeks in forest and when we got to truck bed that was taking us back to barracks and x-mas holiday one of my friends started to sing this and few seconds later almost every guy was singing it including harmonics. Most of our unit had musical back ground (possibly due to the reason we had to learn morse code and the ones that succeeded best of that first test to get in to that special unit of the whole prigade where musicians). Anyway, when we started singing I clearly remember many of us sobbing a bit. This was in the mid 2000..
That last speech made me emotional man :') I'm not a christian or living in a christian community (an atheist in Turkey) but still. Thanks for being here for us Chase, i have been very glad that i'm in this with you and all these viewers. We managed to live through one more year with its goods and bads. I wish good things for you and everyone around here in 2021. Cheers :)
Cheers! According to Finnish Christian church's magazine, about 30% (edited, remembered wrong) of Finns believe into the Bible narrative. Rest are agnostics, atheists (I'm too) or have some other philosophies/faiths. Almost everyone still celebrates Christmas but not as a religious celebration. In fact Finnish Christmas has lots of pagan age traditions behind it, including Yule Goat (Joulupukki, the Finnish version of Father Christmas/Santa Claus) his elves and Christmas tree.
I just needed to like this one before it will air!!! This is a somewhat a sad song and although it has a melancholy feel in it. It's a certainly a Marko' song and god damn it I love the song. Ready to get some tears in my eye's! Have a damn good christmas and a better new year!
Thank you for this reaction! 💙This is one of my favourite Christmas songs and Marko is, of course, the Best singer. I was in the Raskasta Joulua concert two years ago and had tears in my eyes when heard him singing this one. Merry Christmas from Finland! 🎄✨
Shout out Trinx for asking for this, hits a special spot this year since I had to skip traditional Christmas visit to Finland. Thank you both and merry Christmas / hyvää joulua 🎄❄🎅
Interesting choice for a reaction video. This is a classic Christmas song in Finland, just performed at Raskasta Joulua, a festival where famous singers from various Finnish metal bands interpret classic Christmas songs, this being one of them. Obviously there are also super talented guitarists doing solos for the songs. As you said, Marco is a beast on the vocals. This is quite an emotional song, which is brought to another level with the child choir.
Oh man what a way to start my Christmas day!! :-) Thank you Marco and thank you Chase ! THAT...was Remarco-ble ;-). Seriously what a beautiful song, and a masterclass performance. Now to gather up my two li'l hounds and head off to mom's place for dinner and some music! :-) What a great day!! Enjoy everyone!

You know this wasn’t just one event. There’s a thing called ”Raskasta joulua” (Heavy Christmas), a tour of known metal singers performing their versions of christmas songs. I believe Floor was also there one year. They tour around Finland and the concerts are all sold out. That’s how metal we Finns are 😎 Oh I need to add that almost all the artists are Finnish and sing in finnish, so don’t rush buying those tickets yet, folks 😄
Kiitos Chase, thank you! Couldn’t be in live because had teams-meeting with my loved ones and also just got my older son home for christmas. This was special, my favorite christmas song. Merry Christmas! 🎄✨🎅🏼
Thanks a lot to you and and many other reactors who helped through this crazy year! I ve dis- or rediscovered so much music! The best wishes for a happy/better new year to all !!😀💓🎉
So weird, I have been listening to the tune for 3 weeks every day in the background to a digital advent calendar (based on Scandinavian traditions so I guess it makes sense) without having a clue what it was. To hear Marcos version was like a grand Christmas Day climax to the calendar so thanks Chase and have a damn good Christmas!
Thank you! 😊 This is a very traditional Finnish Christmas song as you already knew. It's beautiful, but I've personally found it always a bit too depressing. Nice Christmas present wrapped excellently🎁. I have listened this favorate version of it so many times, and You did it again! Giving a new, impoved version of it. 🎄Happy Christmas to you Chase🎄
If you love everything Marko Hietala, you should check out his performances as Tohtori on Masked Singer Finland. Never thought I'd hear Marko covering Gangster's Paradise, Kiss by Prince, or even Backstreet Boys, but he kills it all!
Watched earlier today Raskasta Joulua concert on tv ❤ and a nice message from Floor. This is a very beautiful song that actually wasn't Christmas song fro. the beginning, but it is one of the most popular Christmas song today in Finland. The lyrics are really beautiful and heart breaking.
I was just reading the original poem by Topelius this morning and thought it’s a very boring translation to finnish.. still very beautiful though, and the essence is there, but was surprised how much lyrically richer the swedish original is.
@@tanjajko7220 I am so used to the Finnish lyrics although my mother language is swedish I hardly know it in swedish...have to admit and have to look at the swedish lyrics.
Hi Chase, Merry Christmas to you too ! Do you realise the musicians in the band Raskasta Joulua? Some of the musicians are in the band Marko played his Solo Tour . His solo album is played by them . I am huge fam of Raskasta Joulua concerts :-)
What a beautiful song this is!! Thanks for this reaction Chase! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy birthday to your Mom. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Hey, just wanted to note that Finland is not in Scandinavia nor are Finns Scandinavian! Our culture sure has Scandinavian influence but our language and culture are different from Scandinavians. Nordic would be an appropriate term.
@@sonjah2750 Yea it´s technically not part of scandinavia, although sometimes it is counted for some reason. I live fairly close to the border of Finland so I´ve always considered them more scandinavian than Denmark :p
@@Akuvision2011 It might be a good one but it isn't accurate. I prefer to stick to the facts. Nothing wrong with being Scandinavian, but Finns just are simply not Scandinavians, not culturally or geographically. Why should we refer to ourselves as something we are not, when there's nothing wrong with just being Nordic or simply Finnish? Nordic is altogether a better branding, as the word is a lot shorter and easier. And it also happens to be accurate, and includes Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland.
first Merry Christmas to you and your family. i always enjoy your reactions. there are some new videos that came out recently of Marko Hietala on the Finnish version of the masked singer. search for "Tohtori" and by the way, he won, obviously

In Swedish version it says that the brother died in Spring
Hi Chase, Merry Christmas to you too !
Do you realise the musicians in the band Raskasta Joulua?
Some of the musicians are in the band Marko played his Solo Tour . His solo album is played by them .
I am huge fam of Raskasta Joulua concerts :-)
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your loved ones! And thanks for this video. ❤
A purple guitar! No ESP EV-1, but still purple....
Finnish Christmas songs, dark and depressing, I love them.
Merry Christmas to you Chase, thank you for all the Christmas gifts you give us everyday with these reactions....
Aaaaw Chase, you sneaky devil, you! 💚
Hyvää Joulua Chase.
Merry Christmas Chase and fellow Nightwish Army! 🥳☃️🎄
What a beautiful song this is!! Thanks for this reaction Chase! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy birthday to your Mom. Greetings from the Netherlands!
I love much of the scandinavian native music, specially the finnish and swedish ones! There are so many variations of this song, and it´s so good :)
Scandinavina is good cultural brand, better just ride thos coattails than getting stuck on a granular geographic definition.
@@Akuvision2011
It might be a good one but it isn't accurate.
@@sonjah2750 why use nordic then if the difference is so wast? They are just words after all, one seems to have stuck while the other hasnt.
Chase ... Marco has done BACK STREET BOYS ...with choreography...Haha! (Masked singer Finland) You MUST react.
Much love to you!!
