I am LOVING reading all of your comments about 80s "preppy" styles you remember (and some even BEFORE the 80s!!)💖 Honestly, I think I might need to make a video dedicated specifically dedicated to all of the different 80s aesthetics 👀
Sorry guys, serious prep here from the 80s; monogram everything, polos, izod, sweater tied around nech, Argyle, tweed, duck shoes, pink and green... loved it. Still wish I had my purse that had buttons to change out your pattern and the decorative belt buckles to change out what color belt you would where. I think my belt buckle was a train. Oh and the gold add a bead necklaces
Thankyou!!! I was just thinking that. Also Polo shirts, those basket bags, Le Sportsac, plaid pleated skirts…..I could go on and on. The memories of trying to fit in.
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! I don't recognize Hope's vintage preppy at all. Maybe we should send her "The Official Preppy Handbook" Now that brings back memories!!
I was thinking the same. I'm an elder millennial but even I know we didn't coin the term "preppy." It came from "prep school" and looked like old money. None of the stuff in this video is preppy at all.
preppy came from “prep school” and was basically snob academia with a big dose of clean cut. I’m not sure about the correlation to prep school for most of the looks, old or new, except the clueless look, which is a bit of a comedy movie take on preppy.
Preppy is what you want to wear when you want people to think you're rich, and now instead of upper class/upper middle class old money setting the benchmark for "rich", it's now social media influencers and reality celebrities. Athleisure is extremely popular with celebrities and influencers. Also Japanese 'street' fashion and Korean fashion, including influences from kpop idols and kpop stage outfits
Agreed preppy , was short for preparatory school. ( prep ) My sister went to a private prep school and I would borrow her outfit and wear it to school as it looked like you had money.. it was about the image. I graduated 2002 for a timeline. 😅
I absolutely love the honesty in her videos. No extra extra filters, just let your skin shine in all its glory and that's perfect 😅❤ Plus you are funny af!
thankfully most of us gen z teens still understand preppy being like posh blazers, pleated skirts and stockings with chanel bags etc but i don't know what happened when it came to gen alpha.. what went wrong.. 💀
Athleisure becoming popular among hollywood celebrities. Also, with the miniskirt + giant hoodie looks in all bright colors, it makes me think of east asian ultra-cute ultra-feminine styles that have been popular over the past 10+ years. If you're skinny and wear a miniskirt with a giant hoodie, it makes you look so twee and uwu, hence, popular silhouette. Nowadays if you look like you could even feasibly be working in an office, it's lower class and lame, because it's rich behavior to be able to live like a bum. No, but like actually, I'm not saying that sarcastically.
I’m a younger gen z and I think of preppy as the new version but I don’t like it. Personally it’s supposed to be a style but they call everything preppy. They claim brands as “preppy brands” and certain skincare is a “preppy brand”. Like bubble and laneige only “preppies” can use. It’s so stupid. And then overconsumption is a problem too. The preppy items and brands become popular and everyone wants them and get like 100000 of them. For example the Stanley issue…. It’s actually bizarre. I’m not a fan of other kids my age and gen alpha, especially the “preppy” kind. Most of them are rude popular girls anyway. This is just my experience so you may not agree but it’s definitely a real issue
Ah this vid has all the feels! I love your second vintage preppy look! I was raised in a cult and had to make all my own dresses and headwear. These preppy looks were in about when I learned to drive, and when we went to town, I would look longingly (and probably creepily!) at all the women in their "normal" clothes and wish I could wear pants! Since I could drive by then, I would sneak out and that second look was what I went for when I bought my first "world" look! I would leave dressed in my cult clothes but change into my "normal" outfit on the way to town! 😂😂😂
My mum recently got diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and every time you post makes me so happy and while I’m watching you it makes me forget what’s going on at home and brings me so much joy!
ugh im so sorry you have to go through this with her, my mom got diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer back in october of last year, stay strong! my moms chemo infusions are almost over, she has 4 left i think.
I think if you had to sum up the worst part of growing up in the 00’s was the intense pressure to dress in the same stuff. We all were supposed to be wearing A&F, Hollister, etc… and it felt SO isolating and devastating to not fit into it or be able to afford it. I’m so glad that some of that seems to have calmed down a lot for younger generations. I think that they are going a much better job of embracing their own funky and fun styles! Of course there are trends and things that are popular but they get to be so much more individualized compared to us, and I LOVE that.
Coastal Preppy was definitely the look i wanted to achieve in the early 2010s as a middle schooler, lol. The long under-tanks layered under your shirt, ripped denim, flip flops... i was so excited to get my one and only navy blue aeropostale zip up hoodie i wore with everything.
What's kinda funny to me is those of us that came of age in the 2000's were harking back 20 years... and now it feels weird to see the new crop of kids doing the same. Ah, the turntables
I love your enthusiasm. I was interested to see what’s changed since I was in high school in the 90’s and college in the early 2000’s but then I realized that none of this was my style or is my style (except maybe a good band tee). It was fun to watch though.
In the 80’s, a preppy shopping spree was heading to The Limited, and Express to buy Forenza sweaters and Outback Red henley shirts, department stores for Sperry deck shoes, Izod polo shirts, Calvin Klein jeans, corduroy trousers, tweed blazers, penny loafers, Esprit logo bags for school, and in the late 80’s to Benetton for rugby shirts and sweatshirts

As someone in college in 88 in the northeast, the preppy look was mostly chinos/khakis, pegged jeans, penny loafers with dimes in, pink and green, and “clean cut” look. I love the new iterations of prep, it’s fun to see! But, Hope, it’s pronounced “burr-burr-rhee”. Much love! :)
We were OG preppy when I was in high school in the 1980's. Plaid skirts, Guess jeans, Calvin Klein jeans ,oxford shirts, polo shirts with the collars up & crewneck sweaters. Yep Gen X!
there were preppy looks before the 80's. But it was mostly for men who attended prestigious universities. However, the 80's made preppy mainstream. 100% the way I dressed and the guys I chose to date.
I love the quote that Hope gave, like i think thats necessary for like all teens to understand they are perfect the way the dress and stuff they dont need to fit in with the standards they need to be themselves and believe in themselves
Today Hope found out she has a lot of old fans! We are triggered by the 2000s being "vintage", because we rocked the OG 80s preppy look back in the olden days lol
My youngest is 20. At 15 she switched schools & changed the whole vibe of the school. It went from very cliquey to super supportive. When she 1st got there, the "it" girls were getting everyone to dress like them by putting down those who didn't & tried making fun of my youngest because she didn't dress like them. She started calling them "clones" in response whenever somebody came at her. Suddenly the kids were all about what she thought was cool. Finally after people started copying her & she hated that, she stood up at lunch & told them "copying someone won't actually make you them. It won't even make you like them. It just gives them power to hurt you if you don't get it right. You should find things you like & stand out for being yourself. You'll be much happier in the long run." (Got a play by play of that little speech from the VP who was initially alarmed when she stood on a table but let it go when he heard the message.) The "it" girls were mad since almost nobody was checking for them like they used to anymore & most of the kids stopped copying each other so it was a much more supportive vibe since there were clear differences to compliment & my kid would loudly tell someone taking a chance on their fit that they looked great, which (of course) led most others to do that as well lol. One kid changed the whole vibe of the school after her 1st year there. It was wild. She has always been super confident in herself though & no, I have no idea where that came from.
@@kelseylou93 Maybe she watched too much Disney channel idk but she's always been a very sure of herself person. I didn't figure out how to have that until I was 16. She has always had it though. While she experienced a few very traumatic things between the ages of 11-13, those things never did shake her sense of belief in herself when they easily could have. They did shake her sense of safety but never her confidence somehow.
@@tazhienunurbusinezz1703 well that’s pretty cool I also watched a lot of Disney growing up and always dressed in what I felt comfortable in and was never dressed coded. One year I got awarded by the school for never getting dress coded. I felt proud of myself and didn’t care if it made it nerdy. lol
I love the clip of hope doing her heatless curls and putting on the aquaphor thingy and then just being herselfffff absolutley love itttttttttttttttttt
The costal preppy looks gave me horrific flashbacks to my poof and super scrunched hair days 😂😂 also I think it'd be so fun to do this style of video with two completely different aesthetics. Loved this format!!
Thank you so much! My 8 year old niece is obsessed with preppy stuff and now I know what she likes without her yelling at me whenever I got her stuff that I liked when I was 8.
I saw a hope video pop up, never clicked so fast. 😂 I had the caboodle and the cover girl foundation way back when, I don’t remeber if it was good or not. Makeup does not work on my skin, I look like I got smacked in the face with a cake Mrs. Doubtfire style
Girrrrl, the second vintage outfit was me! The stupid undershirts lol and short shorts and skirts from a&f and Hollister and all the shell nonsense 🤣 but honestly looking at it again I think it still looks so good 🤣
I just love this so much!!!! My daughter is 11 and is everything “preppy”. I took her school shopping yesterday and I kept saying “wow this was so in style when I was a kid. This is what I wore”!
Preppy in the 80's for me was khaki's, pink polo, sweater over the shoulders, and penny loafers. Hardly ever wore jeans to school and always full hair and makeup.
Man, as an alt fashion fanatic even from like grade school it's always fun to watch videos like this about other "clique" fashions, especially because hearing how bad you wanted certain brands growing up brought back memories of begging my parents for buckled and chained tripp pants and everything hot topic 😂😂 Always love watching your videos, Hope!! 🖤🩷
Loved this video! The second vintage preppy look was definitely my favorite! Also love that you mentioned it's okay to not be the "it girl" I struggled with that growing up too.
Honestly I'm from totally diffrent country , I've never heard of any brands hope talks about , but still with hope it feels like I've lived in the era , doesn't matter the time or place
Happy Birthday Hope! You make me and the Hopefuls so happy, your heart is so kind! Was the thumbnail for the VINTAGE vs NEW products from our childhood a hint to your most recent hair color? love You!!!
Oh my god the coastal look!!! That was literally my style all throughout high school. I had a little of the juicy girl in me too because I definitely wore a lot of PINK products and my holy grail was the juicy couture perfume
That note about style toward the end made me happy. My style flip flops constantly between classic emo, vaguely decora, 80s/90s aesthetic, and Flannel Lesbian™ and I always felt bad that I couldn't stick to a definitive aesthetic. That genuinely made me feel better
I actually switch between styles all the time. One day I'm heavy goth, the next day I'm preppy, the next I'm Harajuku, then I'm 50s vintage, and much much more. I say that switching between styles can be very fulfilling, especially if you like all the styles you switch between. I think that someone can have more than one style.
Loved this. So many memories. I remember telling a co-worker about how surprised I was about not seeing "slouch socks" and BOOM! 5 minutes later and what do I see hanging at the checkout of an Urban Planet Shop? Slouch socks! 😂 I need them!
The “new preppy” is not a new preppy bc preppy isn’t actually what it’s called. It’s called VSCO preppy, and it was only shorted into preppy for so we could fit into our usernames. When gen Alpha saw it, they just thought of it as preppy because they didn’t know the backstory.
Dear Hope, I finally have the courage to tell you, my grandma sadly passed away about two months ago and I vividly remember sobbing and watching your videos all day and you really brightened that dark time so I just wanted to thank you and I love you girlllll❤
Old punk girl here, the preppies in the 80's wore a lot of Vuarnet garments, their t-shirts and sweatshirts were all the rage. Also Ralph Lauren polo shirts and loafers were basic items of prep school style. I freaked out many preppies at my school with my Doc Marten boots, ripped clothing, bomber jackets and spiked hair. 😂
@hopescope Yes, you put on all your skin care and then put that on top it keeps all the products on your face. You will learn how much is too much for you it is also great for eyelashes and eyebrows. Also, caster oils works as well. I like it better. We are twins as well. Have all your bracelets.
I’m realizing I fit right in with the majority 😂 I thought I would be reading comments from the new-age preppy girls but no it’s just us auntie-mamas relating 🤣 I appreciate the fashion-inspo tips. I needed it 😆😭
7:18 no the perfume in the 2000s was not actual perfume but Victoria’s Secret love spell body spray and bath and body works sweet pea or cucumber melon body spray but definitely love spell

Girrrrl, the second vintage outfit was me! The stupid undershirts lol and short shorts and skirts from a&f and Hollister and all the shell nonsense 🤣 but honestly looking at it again I think it still looks so good 🤣
Me too! I would wear that style again!
I wore the lace tank top undershirt until 2015!
12:34 mistaking “Sol de janeiro” as “rio de janeiro” has to be an iconic cool girl mistake 😂
That what I was going to say
@@Channing-n5u haha ikr....it happens sometimes

I just KNEW the crimper was coming out🙌🏽🙌🏽
My vintage prep style was “old money” (I’ve always loved plaid)
Now it’s a mix between “street” and “happy”
Couldn’t agree more
The vintage preppy “Coastal” was so cute! I would’ve loved to wear that back in the day. 🥰
You literally *CANNOT* beat the *vintage look" I'm a '91 baby and those 00's were *THE BEST* 👏🏼👏🏼
Preppy style 1980’s. Suit jacket with shoulder pads. Knee length plaid skirt. Pants with front pleats. Bass ballet flats. Longish knit sweater dress. Lots of lace collars
Whatever Heather
We are the Hopefuls and we are pretty, preppy, kind, amazing, and of course HOPEFUL ❤❤❤❤LOVE YOU HOPE 😊😊😊😊
I just love this so much!!!! My daughter is 11 and is everything “preppy”. I took her school shopping yesterday and I kept saying “wow this was so in style when I was a kid. This is what I wore”!
Your face + the outfit + the hair at 19:25 is giving Chappell Roan 😍😍 I’m all for the 2000’s style it will always be superior in my head
'old money' look and the 'street' look from both the eras are so cute, loved this video just like I love every single video 💗💗
you looked so amazing in all the outfits and your makeup looks were so beautiful
OMG I am SO honored 😭 love your videos sm. Thank you for supporting Dandy! 💖✨ btw the quality time hoodie looks amazing on you 😚
First and I love your hoodies!!!
Omg I love your hoodies
Preppy in the 80's for me was khaki's, pink polo, sweater over the shoulders, and penny loafers. Hardly ever wore jeans to school and always full hair and makeup.
Man, as an alt fashion fanatic even from like grade school it's always fun to watch videos like this about other "clique" fashions, especially because hearing how bad you wanted certain brands growing up brought back memories of begging my parents for buckled and chained tripp pants and everything hot topic 😂😂
Always love watching your videos, Hope!! 🖤🩷
I am more of the newer preppy style, but the vintage prep style is GORGEUSS!! Remember, one aesthetic dosent limit to one style! If that makes sense-
It’s giving old lady got me rolling on the floor😂
Loved this video! The second vintage preppy look was definitely my favorite! Also love that you mentioned it's okay to not be the "it girl" I struggled with that growing up too.
I was addicted to anything Playboy 😅 the curtains, the bedding, the pyjamas, the jewellery - everything 🤣
90’s babies ❤️
I had plans to get a playboy tattoo when I turned 18. Thank God I didn't go through with it!
🤣
@@smcg1085 OMG SAAAAME - Literally would be planning the cover up :D
Is it just me or when she did her eyeliner on both eyes it was so funny cause one eye was so small and the other eye was so big!! Love u hope! ❤❤😂😂
Honestly I'm from totally diffrent country , I've never heard of any brands hope talks about , but still with hope it feels like I've lived in the era , doesn't matter the time or place
Happy Birthday Hope! You make me and the Hopefuls so happy, your heart is so kind! Was the thumbnail for the VINTAGE vs NEW products from our childhood a hint to your most recent hair color? love You!!!
The coastal look brought me in a flashback hahaha! Millenials were unhinged
Omg yesss I'm still kinda obsessed with it
you’re literally my comfort person i love you kislux !
10:31 HOPE!!!!!! You are not supposed to take the little white bit in the centre out!! That makes it come out in a flower shape instead!!
Oh my god the coastal look!!! That was literally my style all throughout high school. I had a little of the juicy girl in me too because I definitely wore a lot of PINK products and my holy grail was the juicy couture perfume
Hiii
Omg 2 seconds ago
the coastal preppy reminds of twilight/bellaswan

Omg I love how Hope only crimped the front of her hair lol
there is such a big difference between now and the 2000s its crazy!!!!!
My great grandma used to do “slugging” with Vaseline in the 60’s!
wow ! I’m the 60’s ?
I have used Vaseline for years. It makes your skin feel so soft and plumps fine lines..
Mine used ponds.
Omg 😂 my daughter uses preppy on everything. I’m like do you know what that even means 😂🤣
Dear Hope, I finally have the courage to tell you, my grandma sadly passed away about two months ago and I vividly remember sobbing and watching your videos all day and you really brightened that dark time so I just wanted to thank you and I love you girlllll❤
So sorry for your loss love 🥺❤️
Thank you❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss. May her soul rest in peace
13:05 those nails are cottage core
STOP I NEED TO HAVE EVERY THING OLD COASTAL I WANT TO LOOK LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME I LOVE IT😭😭😭💗💗💗!
It does work. I am 58 and don't have many wrinkles because it keeps all the products on your skin and gives it time to absorb. I use petroleum jelly.
Ohhh so you do it on top of your other skincare products?! That's a great idea!! I honestly just feel like I used too much lol it was so uncomfortable
@hopescope Yes, you put on all your skin care and then put that on top it keeps all the products on your face. You will learn how much is too much for you it is also great for eyelashes and eyebrows. Also, caster oils works as well. I like it better. We are twins as well. Have all your bracelets.
My Neices love them in Australia.I also got them watching you. Have lots of really good makeup tips if you need any. 💗
HOW DOES YOUR COMMENT ONLY HAVE 3 LIKES?!?!?!?!?❤Love you hope x❤
I love your videos ❤❤ I did not even miss one of your videos ❤❤❤😊😊
9:49 for slugging, you’re only supposed to use a pea sized amount so it doesn’t look like that in the morning lol
Vintage preppy coastal was literally how I dressed a decade ago... gosh I can't believe you nailed it like that. I feel personally attacked 🤣🤣🤣🤣
She is calling the Naked palette "vintage" too and it came out 8 yrs ago.
I love watching "preppy" videos and I love how you decided to make a video like this!
I love u I’ve watched used for so long. You’re my favourite favourite UA-camr.
I’m realizing I fit right in with the majority 😂 I thought I would be reading comments from the new-age preppy girls but no it’s just us auntie-mamas relating 🤣 I appreciate the fashion-inspo tips. I needed it 😆😭
The fact that 2000 is considered vintage hurts my Gen x heart. Born in 71 but 80s girl. Preppy was back then and probably before that even
It's hard to believe 2000 really was 24 years ago 🤯
@@hopescopemakes me feel vintage. Lol😊
Right?!? Vintage to me is the 70's, not 2000's 😂
@@hopescopeoh my oh my gooosh This makes me so young …. I was only born 11 years ago 😮😮😮
