The old green coolant in cast iron engines needed frequent flushes. My old cast iron block cars now can go over a decade without changing the coolant with no observable rust in the coolant. Use good coolant - it's worth the few extra bucks.

Coolants have improved significantly over the years. The factory fill can easily go 5 uears. When I started driving, we used to call it anti-freeze, and we'd use it in the winter. In the summer, many people would just use plain old water. They'd even add some when we filled up our gas. Of course, thermostats, hoses, water pumps, and radiators would need to be replaced much more often. Maintenance today is often overlooked.

I had a car in the late 70s early 80s that had a thermostat problem and it was easier for me to take the thermostat out when the weather warmed up and replace it when it started getting cold. Just two bolts on the top of the engine. I did eventually spend the $7 to $8 and buy a new thermostat. Radiator leaked so threw in a couple of cans of Bars Leaks and it also lubricated the water pump. No computers no air-conditioning except the wind down one but had a very nice heater. An asbestos bandage fixed the hole in the muffler and the worst issue was the left front sub axle broke on me one night and that was expensive. $33 in 1980 was a lot of money. 😲

I think they have these extended intervals for two reasons.
    1. They can brag overall maintenance costs are low..
    2. Less dirty fluids out in the environment. A lot of people pour used fluids down drains where they wind up contaminating soil or rivers..

@@dharley189 I think it’s to fool the buyers that it won’t cost much to own but in reality it will require maintenance more than they lead on.

How often do you perform brake fluid flushes? Manufacturers recommended every two years. If you open the hood on any car and see that the brake fluid is black you can be sure it's never been done. That's a compromised braking system waiting to fail.

Never flush brake fluid unless it has been abused and dark. That's been my experience. My 1988 is running on the factory fill and is still clear in color. Brake fluid doesn't age with time, it ages only when overheated by someone abusing their vehicle.

Another common reason brake fluid goes bad is when people open the fluid reservoir to check the level. Don't ever do that (unless you have to when the reservoir is not plastic) as brake fluid is hygroscopic. Water contaminated brake fluid is an emergency condition in my opinion. Just when you need your brakes the most the pedal goes soft.

I would recommend every two years or when it starts changing color if you wanna play it safe with maintenance or just follow the manufacturers interval on my personal car I do it every year as a part of the spring maintenance that I do to my truck
