Back in the 1980s, I heard my grandmother say she "hated" Reagan. I'd never heard her use language like that before. She was a regular church-goer, nearly 80 years old at the time, living on a fixed income.
I asked her why. She said "because he wants to cut my Social Security."

It's amazing how many of Ronald Reagan's disastrous policies can still be felt today. Union busting. Dismantling mental healthcare. Trickle down economics. Deregulating wall street and the banks. Republicans accuse democrats of destroying America all the time, but those policies right there? You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has done more long term damage to the US than Reagan.

Yes. I was working for JTPA - job training w a small salary, while people learn skills, including deportment, for a job. Reagan slashed it dreadfully, saying it wasn't important. It included teens - every time you hear "break the cycle of dependence", know there was an excellent program doing that, and it was very successful, but Reagan took it away. I mean, it didn't directly benefit only the wealthy so GOP said it had to be dramatically cut, then said, look its not working. Just like forcing the PO to pay in advance an outrageous amount of $, that no biz does, then say - look they're in the red! Yes, we need at least 2 parties, but both need to recognize they're there for our nation not themselves, that we're not a dictatorship, and believe in true servant leadership.
If they get rid of Social Security, they need to pay me back. If they won't, I will pretend I am a billionaire and not pay my taxes

You have to understand something about Florida's senior citizens. Florida is a state where rich folks go to retire. As such, Social Security is a very small part of their retirement. They get much more from their company pensions and their investments. As such, they see these benefits as at best unnecessary and often as money going to poor people that should go to them. They see the rest of us as trash and somehow not worthy of enjoying any retirement or health care.

You know what would help with medicare? The government ability to negotiate prescriptions like insulin. Capping maximum about that certain services can be charged. If Scott can take advantage of Medicare others can and are too and it’s our Tax payer dollars paying for it.

Social Security is not an entitlement. It's money taken out of every check you've ever received.
While we are focused on SS and Medicare I think it should be pointed out that agencies like the EPA, FDA, Consumer Protection, civil rights, etc., etc., etc. would also be sunsetted. As we are experiencing first hand in OH what happens when corporations are allowed ‘pure capitalism’ without regulation we cannot allow politicians who are in their pocket eliminate these agencies and then never bring them back. We fought these fights already.
Just like women fought so many years for right to choose in the 70s. You have to be ready to fight back when they come for your rights.
Scott may just keep quiet about it for a while but his draconian plan will remain.

Rick Scott's plan was more radical than just cutting Social Security and Medicare, which are the only programs that come out of every individual paycheck your whole working life.

230 years of legislation, millions of laws, a myriad of programs, Marines, Navy, Army, Air Force, billions of pages of specifications and regulations, tens of millions jobs, tax schedules, trade agreements, and so much more..., eliminated every 5 years by a Party that took 15 votes and ridiculous concessions just to elect a Speaker.
I don't see the point is sunsetting any legislation for any reason. I understand some legislation may need to change as our country changes but automatically sunsetting legislation every five years doesn't make sense to me. Give it up, Senator Scott. It's a dumb idea whose time will never come.
Making statements about how the SS cuts have been on the chopping block for years or decades, doesn't exonerate the GOP from their pandering to private insurers and Wall Street. We are determined to keep SS and there's going to be a huge push back to save our retirement if any legislation is introduced to destroy the program!

This borrowing is accomplished through the sale of special-issue Treasury bonds to the Social Security trust fund.

As of now, the US government owes over $2.8 trillion to the Social Security trust fund. The government is required to repay this debt, and failure to do so could potentially jeopardize the stability of the Social Security program in the future.
